Weeze/Nidderhein Airport To Close?

Wed Jan 04, 2006 5:57 am

It appears that Dusseldorf Weeze/Nidderhein Airport has had its license removed and may have to close, though flights are still operating in the short term. The problem is related to noise. Some links on the matter

That's really sad news. If I recall correctly, the noise complaints are coming mostly from the Dutch village Bergen at the other side of the border.
It's a real shame if they have to close for that little noise, 3 years after opening. How many real traffic movements do they really have a day, except from GA? Six? Won't be a lot.
Would be the second aviation 'disaster' for the region in one and a half year, after V BIRD went belly up in October 2004.

One interesting note: The dutch community sued the airport before a German court and won the case, a rather interesting event to me...

I read parts of the judgement, and before people start bashing it, it looked very objective to me. Law is all about balancing, and in this case they balanced the noise issues against the promised development of the area. However, not surprisingly it turned out to be that NRN was only attractive for airlines like FR who don't really help an airport in making profits... The promised business park never happened. Therefore, the court found that the noise issue was not balanced in a proper way.

The court also said that it did not question the airport itself, but the procedure.

This does not come as a surprise to me. It takes a lot of work and good preparation to get the procedures done right, but it certainly is possible. However when regional politicians push, these rules often aren't adhered to. The same happened in Berlin. It is all about good planning, something which isn't done everywhere.

Please update my mind:
Isn´t what now is NRN identical to the former RAF Bruggen (BGN) ?
