A small dog, black and white with a spotted tail (number unknown), just ran off the right side of runway 13R at DAL. Emergency crews are out tending to the animal and trying to clear the runway.

Pretty quiet here right now and flights do not appear to be affected, operations are just temporarily being moved to 31R. Nothing has been on 31L for the past 15 minutes or so.

It circled for about 20 minutes and appeared to dump fuel in a couple different places.

SWA doesn't accept animals for shipment, so I'd guess there's either a hole in the perimeter fence somewhere and a dog got in, or the dog got loose from its owner parked at an FBO on the field somewhere.

I'm absolutely astonished that WFAA, KXAS, and KTVT didn't all have their helicopters up to cover this "breaking news" (Dog Bites Jet!) and interrupting regular programming...

The point is that if WN would just move to DFW dogs would no longer run across the runway. The fact that dogs can access DAL just proves that DFW is the better airport and could handle Southwest's flights while doubling their profits on the shorthauls. Why do you hate capitalism?

Thanks, Alex. Yeah, just sitting around here about three hours ago, looked out the window and saw a dog running down the runway being chased by three police cars. About the only thing going on here today.

The type of dog has not been mentioned. If it's a chiuaua, I imagine the CFM56's can handle that FOD.

My favorite "dog vs airport" story.


Way back in 1965 or so I was taking Pacific Airlines flight 795 (an F27) from LAS to BUR. Rules had it that we had to have an intermediate stop between the LA area and LAS back then so WJF (Lancaster/Palmdale CA Wiley J Fox field) was used. That was pretty much a one man operation with the ticket/baggage/tower person being one and the same airline Station Agent.

On this fine spring day the agent, awaiting our arrival, dutifully scanned the horizon with his binoculars watching for traffic to advise us of both in the air and on the ground. After our "10 min out" call was made he began his sweeps from the "tower" again. About the time he could see us coming at him something else caught his trained eye and from years of experience in the desert he knew just what do to insure our safety and the required tools needed. We received a terse warning to fly by first and look for his hand signaled OK. A few minutes later we could see the problem and the 30 or so souls on board were warned of the impending danger ahead.

"Ladies and Gentleman, if you will look out down on the right side you will be able to see one of the rights of nature on the High Desert that could have been a real problem for us this morning but our trained and professional ground crew has the situation in hand and after one more pass we anticipate a near scheduled arrival"

Passengers who gazed out those great Fokker/Fairchild knee to forehead windows could see the runway centerline racing by with the Station Agent puttering madly down it's length in his battery powered cart waving the company broom in true "Hatari" style at two resident coyotes locked in "loving embrace" but still avoiding his daring approach. Expertly, with great ranting gestures he manuvered them in the neede direction. He made us proud.

By the time we reversed direction and made a second buzzing we could see the triumphant agent waving a thumbs up. The natives? They were still very busy but now off the pavement and hiding behind a creosote bush.

I really miss the old days and would trade a 747 for an F27 or M404 in a second. And a broom for a computer.

This is absolutely unacceptable... further evidence that DAL should be closed immediatly. DFW was built to accomidate these anamolies, WN should move there ASAP

Hmm, I remember when I flew down to PDX over the summer with my dog, she really liked the FBO. At one point, when we were walking out to the plane, she slipped out of her collar and began running around. Fortunetely, she came back without damaging any planes. Good girl, Ebony!

Only time I ever been on the flightdeck of an airliner while landing (a BA 757 at EDI) a fox run across the runway quite close in front of us. Captain didn't bat an eyelid.

I was in the departure lounge at YYZ a few years ago waiting for my flight to LHR. All of a sudden I noticed a small black dog running around on the ramp. I have never seen any AC baggage handlers moving as fast as then. The dog must of escaped from a cage and was causing quite a problem for the guys trying to catch it.

The whole event provided much entertainment for all the passengers watching the fiasco.

That's because they were too busy creating gasoline buying panics by flying over a "2-cents cheaper per gallon" gas station.

I've seen coyotes sun themselves with impunity near the runway at KAMA... Now this in KDAL.

How did the dog get past security? Was it armed? Did it make any threatening gestures? It just goes to show how lax security is getting these days.
