SAA Star Alliance Surprise

Fri Jan 27, 2006 10:39 pm

Without giving too much away, if you are a keen aviation spotter in the Jo'burg area; take a drive past SAA's Tech area for a sneak peak....

Honestly, why can't you just post the photo?!

First you tell all of us who are spread all over the world to drive by Jo'burg airport to see a "surprise", then you post a picture in a group that you have to sign up for! Is it really so hard to just put in on photobucket or somewhere else on the net? Why do people who only want to see that photo have to subscribe to a Y!Group?

This how I would have imagine the thread:

Title: SAA Star Alliance Surprise
Body: Hey all, driving past JNB tonight I saw a SAA A340 in Star Alliance colours! Check out the photo: [Photo]. I love it! What do y'all think?

Just some constructive criticism for the next time!

End of rant.

The truth is I don't have the equipment available to to post my own pic, so I thought I would direct you to a known pic from someone else where he posted it.

I have no doubt that this photographer has submitted the pics to airliners.net (he has a fine collection on the site already) but these may take a while to appear on the site.

This was the quickest way to include you all for the preview. (The pics were taken as the aircraft rolled out of the hangar, some of the paint still possibly wet!)

Look out for it at an airport near you soon!

Hi all
To be honest I prefer the normal SAA colours, I really think is a great livery. By the way do you think SAA will come to MAD. And does anybody know if SAA have ever flown into Spain?

I've never flown them but I hope to do so next time I fly to ADL.

Not sure about BCN and MAD but in the early days, SAA used to stop in Las Palmas between South Africa and Europe.

No Caravelle there, but a 747SP, a DC-4 (white tail), Constellation, DC-4 (orange tail) and 747-300. There is something hiding behind the Connie, I think it might be a De Havilland Dove? And it's not a museum, just an area at JNB where SAA planes go to die....

I have to say that I think the individual airlines should keep their own fins when they do a Star Alliance jet , after all you can hardly miss that it is a Star Alliance plane with the huge lettering down the side ( idea: maybe put the Star logo on the winglets ) . I think SQ had the right idea when they did theirs . SA's fin is so beautiful that the Star logo fin is rather dull and sad in comparison . Having said that , I still think it is great to see this plane for what it represents to SAs (and *As ) future rather than for the colour scheme itself .

It needs a tiny drop of colour - perhaps the SA logo (SA tail) next to the 'South African' titles.

Yes I agree too they should keep their logo livery on the tail and put the star alliance logo next to the star alliance name. Just like SQ did but they didn't put the star allliance logo on the plane am I correct or not? they have their SQ livery on their tail.

Well I went out to the airport again and didn't see it anywhere, so it is either hidden in a hangar or somewhere else in the world. I did see an AN-124 with its nose open but when I tried to take a picture the security guard said I needed a letter from the airports company. I guess he was in his rights to say so as I was standing at a security barrier less than 20m from the plane!

@SAA201

Thank you for wasting my time.

Instead of posting your images to this thread where they could be seen by thousands of aviation enthusiasts, you directed us to your obscure Yahoo group to see several poor images of an SAA Star Alliance paint job.

I don't know if this was some kind of ego trip for you, or you were desperately trying to increase membership of your Yahoo group, but in either case you wasted our time.

If there was a disrepected users list (AKA the Ignore list) rest assured you would be a certain candidate for inclusion.

Wishing you a long stint stuck in an unmoving traffic jam so that you can experience the same time wasting experience that you have inflicted on the rest of us.

I could have kept quiet about the news and let spotters find out about the aircraft for themselves. I thought it was something worth sharing though.

I felt it fair to direct Airliners.net members to a place where the photograher posted his pics. This way he gets the credit for work.

Sorry if you don't agree with this method, we are all entitled to our own opinions.

I think this is a bit harsh .... I will admit that I was initially pissed off with having to mess around with Yahoo groups ... but the OP has pointed out that he could not post the photo because it is not his to post and he didn't want to infringe on the photographers copyright . ( something I didn't think about when I swiped the photo and posted it .... my apologies both to SAA201 and the photographer for that ) In the end , while I think that perhaps SAA201 did not think out his post particularly well I don't for one second believe that he was intending to piss people off or waste their time ... he simply wanted to share what is after all very exciting news - that SA have painted an A340-600 in Star colours in preparation for their long-awaited joining and I thank him for that . As for your last paragraph - I think it proves that you deserve to be on a disrespected list yourself

I think it was a very interesting decision to send the aircraft on its first flight in new colours to Atlanta of all places! I'm pretty sure the guys over at Delta couldn't have been too impressed! (Given that SAA still has code share agreements with DL!)

The aircraft did a domestic flight to Cape Town today. Not too sure where it went this evening, but I'll try get back to you with that info...

SAA201 you did the right thing by not disrespecting the photographer and posting his/her picture on a.net, especially when the person posted it in a forum that is accessed by members only. What this actually does is show how much respect you have for others' work. As for those who are flaming you, their posts also say much about them and their posts do not deserve a reply.
