They start with the Aeroflot A310 incident in 1992 (?), when the captain allowed his son to take the controls.

I recall reading a very harrowing account of this in one of Macarthur Job's Air Disaster books. Very sad story.

And the second one on, at 10PM is about the JAL B747 that went down in 1985 with 524 passengers.

The Sun newspaper had two pages on the new series. "Kid in the cockpit" should be good to watch. I think there is going to be an episode on the KLM and Pan Am 747 crash at Tenerife.

I believe they are doing one on the DHL Airbus that was struck by a SAM over Iraq, Five accidently played the wrong promo a few weeks back instead of one for the older series.

Glad to hear that its back its the only decent programme other than the 1990s "Black Box", christ how old am I?.....

Now there's a suprise, well I didn't know "The Sun" actually reviewed sensible non- Big Brother programming.

I would love to see the Aer Lingus flight 712 in 1968 that crashed into the sea. The reasons for the crash are unknown and many have said that there was an Aer Lingus cover up and they made out that a British missile shot it down. So I dont think we will see this one anytime soon.

I've been watching the last series. Superb.

Dramatic, well done graphical re-enactments.

I was watching one about the ASA Brasillia that lost and engine and crash a few miles short of the runway.... I was biting my nails! Excellent graphics. They captured the impact and progress of the crash brilliantly... it was like someone filmed the actual event.

It really adds something to the whole investigation.

I shall be watching this evening!

Actually the FedEx incident was almost a crash.
There was this FedEx pilot who falsified his flying experience and after a few months others who flew with him noticed that he didn't have as much flying skill as he claimed. FedEx did an investigation and was going to fire him. He deadheaded on a FedEx DC-10 and shortly after takeoff started beating up the Captain and First Officer with an iron bar and a spear gun. They didn't see it coming, but they were able to overpower him and the Captain was incapacitated but the F/O got the plane on the ground with some fancy flying. From what I understand the flight deck was a bloody mess, complete with hair and pieces of scalps and lots of blood everywhere.
Unfortunately, both the Captain and the F/O cannot fly anymore due to the head injuries/trauma that they received in this attack.
I think this guys plan was to fly the DC-10 into the FedEx hub at MEM thereby destroying it.

Actually he was a Flight Engineer that had been falsifying his logs, and they were about to fire him after an investigation.

He planned to kill the pilots in a manner consistent with blunt forcve trauma, and then crash the aircraft into Fedex's main hub, wiping out both the company, and getting his family life insurance at the same time.

Probably!  Smile I got so used to calling terrestrial TV "council TV" and cable/satellite TV "rich man's TV" because of a few people at work that I lost sight of the advantages of Sky. Mind you, I get broadband and my telephone service from them so it is convenient.

The annoying thing is that you could programme the old analogue box to change up to 2 weeks in advance. So much for progress.  Sad

The one incident I've always been curious about - and it's not quite a crash (but neither is the DHL A300) is the Interflug A310 that went into wild gyrations over Moscow SVO in or around 1990 (yes, I know - dates aren't my strong point this evening!  Wink). It was a miracle it didn't crash. The crew tried to override the autopilot when a G/A was initiated.

Tragically, CAL had less success when its crews tried to do that - on two occasions.

On April 7, 1994, FedEx flight 705 is just finishing its climb out of Memphis, U.S. when an off-duty FedEx flight engineer suddenly storms the cockpit. Bashing in the crew members' skulls with a hammer and armed with a spear gun, the crazed attacker seems intent on killing the crew and taking over the plane.

None of these interesting sounding shows are currently playing on the US version of the National Geographic Channel. All we get this week are silly and worthless stories about aliens, 'bible mysteries', overly aggressive dogs, monster trucks, and violent gangs repeated over and over. American television is just plain PATHETIC!

Here's a nice example of what the National Geographic Channel shows Americans each night...

7P Unlocking Da Vinci's Code, The Full Story
9P Stigmata, Is it Real?
10P Science of the Bible, Rivals of Jesus
11P Megalightning
12A Stigmata, Is it Real?
1A Science of the Bible, Rivals of Jesus
2A Taboo, Tests of Faith

As you can probably see, it's nothing but childish nonsense masquerading as legitimate scientific analysis.

Definitely agree there GARPD. The last series was excellent. The one I liked was the DHL 757 and Tupolev crashing in mid-air. The graphics were so well done and realistic. It sent a chill down my spine when you actually saw how the DHL tail "sliced" through the first few rows of the tupolev sending the flightdeck hurtling to the ground. Scary stuff! Bit gutted tho. Don't have Sky so can't watch this latest series. Hopefully they'll eventually show it on Five.

Yer,

I thought the Aeroflot one was good, but i was shocked at the JAL one. The last time i saw a documentary on this flight, showed a woman giving a statement and she said that all she heard was a massive bang. They never went into a lot of detail, and i assumed it just crashed into trees after decompression.

I had no idea that the aircraft was in and out of control for over 30mins before crashing. If only there were an airport straight ahead of them, they'd have made it with perhaps a massive landing with maybe only 5 or less deaths instead of the 5 survivals in this case  Sad

Can't wait for DHL tomorrow. The crew of that flight were excellent. So calm.

Thanks

They need to get some good programming on here in the states. I'd be glued to that air investigation show. I could care less about religous background and the "existance" of Area 51 according to "Bob the Desert Hippie". What does one have to do in order to get that show broadcasted here in the states? Anyone know?

FX management, which I was at the time, was allowed to see the cockpit photos. It was a horrible mess. The pilot made a first landing attempt, but was to hot and high, so instead of going around, he put it into a tight bank which put tremendous stress on the airframe. He put it down the second time.

The culprit was going to crash it into the hub.

Is the JAL one about the explosive decompression caused by the rear bulkhead failure?? That one was on Seven here last week and they are usually shown after they are on National Geographic as I usually watch them on Foxtel first and then again a few months later on Seven.

We have seen some of these many times over on differant programs produced by differant people. Lets go back in time alittle to the 50-60's so you kiddies can see stuff most of you don't know about. Like the whistling swan that knocked the Capital Viscount out of the sky....the Electra and whirl mode, the Eastern Electra that went down at BOS after hitting over a hundred starlings on take-off...the AA 707 that rolled over on its back on climb out at ILD in 62... The UA DC8 that caught fire at Denver in the early 60's..The two mid-airs involving DC 9's, Allegheny and TWA.......the list is endless.
Sorry gang, but the Flt 800 has been hashed over, and all done quite well I may add, but lets do something else. I will have an interest in the Aeroflot thing. That was a strange one.

I agree. And I hate Cablevision. They have a monopoly over here in the NYC metro area!

Verizon phone company here which merged with Bell Atlantic has installed fiber optic for: Internet/TV/Phone in my town already and expanding into the county.
They're offered me fiber optics tv but I told them I want to see an demo, the channel list, reliabilty before I think about getting the service.

As like every big companies do, Cablevision sued them saying verizon doesn't have an license to provide cable which we all know is horse bull.

Besides I'm not happy with a $70 monthy cable bill from Cablevision for some HBO's, starz and encore plus this stupid box and remote rental fee.
I'd much rather buy a box and remote outright and not pay rental fee for it.

All this Air Crash Investigation is being shown on NGC in the UK. I think we're lagging behind by 2 months by programming.

'd be glued to that air investigation show. I could care less about religous background and the "existance" of Area 51 according to "Bob the Desert Hippie".

The programming described in this thread sounds an awful lot like "Air Emergency" a series that (at least according to my TiVo) runs on the National Geographic Channel here in the US. In fact, I'd be suprised if what the UK is getting as "Air Crash Inverstigation" isn't a repackaged version of Air Emergency [many of those episodes sound like Air Emergency episodes]. Granted, I haven't seen a new Air Emergency episode in quite some time, but the old episodes are in circulation on NGC.

National Geographic is very hit or miss-- but at leat they still mantain a broad programming spectrum vs. say TLC (The "Trading Spaces" network)

TiVo is the cure for the American Television blues... I went back and forth about plopping down the $300 + 12.95/month for months before finally doing it, but it combined with digital cable means I'm never without somethine enlightening and/or entertaining to watch whenever I want to. [For those who doin't know, TiVo can--if you allow it to--learn your television preferences and proactively record things that it thinks you'll like if you don't have something else scheduled... Great way to discover things you've never heard of...]

They start with the Aeroflot A310 incident in 1992

How freaky! I had just mentioned that in another thread over the weekend! I still can't get over that accident...

Watching it last Night and it shows that the aircraft had a fault which was unkown before this accident. As one of the experts said. there is always more than 1 reason for an accident. so the child in the cockpit seat was a problem but the aircraft had an inherent fault.... Good TV
