Rolling Stones B747 + MD11 In GIG

Tue Feb 07, 2006 7:59 pm

Rolling Stones (band) and cargo will arrive in GIG on 13 February/06 onboard a B747 and MD-11 bringing a total of 170 tonnes of equipment.

In addition, 5 containers will come via sea for what will be a remarkable show in Copacabana beach on 19 February/06, just before Carnaval! The stage in Copacabana will be the size of a 7-floor building.

I hope spotters will give of plenty of pics of the Stones' in GIG.

On its European tour the Stones came onboard a PrivateAir B757 and cargo came separate on a B747. Anyone knows whether the B747 and MD-11 coming to GIG are in addition to a B757? Which airline/cargo will operate the B747 and MD-11 to GIG?

Tks,

Apparently a bridge is being built to take the band from their hotel room or balcony down to the beach stage!!

Right, also there are vip spaces at Copacabana Palace (from Orient Express) and at the beach will complete the show!

The show is considered the "gold key" of this summer. Rio city hall also tried U2 for a show at Maracanã, but theres some matches for the state championship during the weekend and the stadium is under preparation for the Pan American Games in 2007.

Flights to GIG are really full during the weekend show.

May be our friends at Buenos Aires/EZE can help us, the flights probably will bring the equipments from Buenos Aires after Rolling Stones show there.

Looks like a hell of a show!  Wow!

I just saw the Stones at Detroit on Sunday, they played in the halftime of the Superbowl.

Amazing. They were in my living room on Sunday, and now they're in Brazil.
I wish I could go from my living room to brazil in two days.

I was about to start a thread asking who operates the aircraft used by the Stones' tour crew. Hardi beat me to it!

That's what this article implies:

Os Rolling Stones desembarcam no Rio em vôo fretado na madrugada do dia 17.

I'm assuming the cargo planes with the equipment will be at GIG at least a few days before the band arrives.

GIG Airport Administration confirms two 747's authorized to land on Jan 14 and Jan 15. One 747-200 and one 747-400 both from Atlas but operated by Polar Air Cargo.

Note: Buenos Aires shows will take place AFTER Rio and not before as i comment above.

Should be one helluva show! They sure know how to travel I guess. Here they get a 747, and an MD-11 and who was it, Bon Jovi(?), who was travelling in a 707 that ran off the runway a few weeks ago. Someone must be feeling a little jilted.

Of course, the above stage is unfinished....this type of shows and events are frequent in Copacabana and the show is being meticulously prepared.

So the cargo planes are arriving before the Stones. As per your info, two B747s, what about the MD-11?

And which plane is the band going to use, PrivateAir B757?

I believe the newspaper get a wrong info on B747+M11. But could be right, meanwhile GIG has no information about a M11F flight during the weekend before the show (only the RG Log M11F GIG-FRA 3x weekly flight)

I'm trying to obtain better info on this Hardi. As soon as i get some info i will advise you.

Felipe, then I think the newspaper got it wrong and the equipment will come with 2 747F, right? That's a lot of cargo space!

Correct. I was there for new year, 2 million people, and Rolling Stones show is expected to have about 2 million people as well. Hotels are 100% booked in Rio, the same as New Year and Carnaval.

Lipe: They arrived today in GIG with a B757 from Pace Airlines at 2h43 bringing a total of 50 pax. Do you have any confirmation of the cargo planes, 1 B747 and 1 MD11; or 2 B747?

Thats a huge, mega stage for what should be a paltry 90 minute to 2 hour show, at best. There going to be any other entertainment before or afterwards? One would think considering the cost and the size of the stage

Yup! You beat me to it. They departed SJU directly to GIG in a 757. The local newspaper says the plane is owned by Mark Cuban, owner of the Dallas Mavericks.

2 747 and really from Atlas operated by Polar. One additional 747 will be used for a GIG-EZE charter and also RG Log will trasport part with their M11F / 727F.

A sidenote, GIG this friday night was really full, flights coming with 100% loads and a really strong São Paulo - Rio (GIG/SDU) shuttle as due to some extra flights plus business jets, Brazilian Air Traffic Control (Sindacta) made a special control on São Paulo-Rio route this night. 30 minutes waiting for departure and 20 minutes over Rio skies.

Any idea whether U2's arrival in GRU this morning was in a private jet and of which airine? Any cargo planes for their show in Sao Paulo tomorrow and Tuesday?

Will be in a private jet, but they will visit BSB first as Mr. Vox has a meeting with Mr. Lula this sunday.

U2 will need 02 747F too.

I expect to see the Rolling Stones at the airport this night.

Yes, also the band will took PP-VSA (RG 738) this night in a charter/private flight GIG-EZE this night (19). Cargo to EZE went thru PO8491 GIG-EZE STD:19/2145z N523MC, operated by Polar.
