Snow Cancellations

Sun Feb 12, 2006 9:34 am

So far Delta is cancelling many flights as seen here:
http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20060211/ts_nm/airlines_storm_dc

And I just got word that AA is suspending flights in and out of JFK from 8pm tonight until 8pm tomorrow. Cannont confirm but that is the word that is getting out.

Here at B6 over 80+ flights cancelled already.

Anyone else have info on their airlines?

I was just out at ORD and it's snowing hard, but saw BA 777 arriving.

I know it's not as bad as the NE, but I wanted to talk a little.

We (UA) ran all of our Int'ls both in and out at IAD. I don't think we had any widebody cancellations Int'l or domestic. We also ran most trans-cons and intra-hub flights, we only cancelled about 15% overall. UAX took a much larger hit due to the fact they handle most of UA's traffic in the N.E. corridor. Most red-eyes are still coming and ops are "expected" back to normal by 10am tomorrow.

I heard from a friend at MQ in RDU, that they cancelled everything to the N.E through all day 12FEB.

Just heard on Fox News. Winds are going to come around the storm and blow from the northeast. The Cape Cod/Boston shoreline is expecting 20-25 foot sea swells with high tide at 11AM. KBOS is gonna get HAMMERED.

B6 is cancelled at JFK until 11:45am today. My father leaves at 1:05pm for PBI...not cancelled (yet) but there will obviously be a hefty delay. If it is cancelled, he can get on the 9pm out of LGA. If that's cancelled, he won't be able to get down to PBI till next Sunday.

Keeping my fingers crossed.

As of last night, yes. In the last five minutes I just checked again and saw that there are still a few seats tomorrow on LGA-PBI and one seat on Thursday on JFK-PBI. Besides that, everything else is sold out. Don't forget...next weekend is President's Day Weekend, which is the busiest travel weekend of the year.

Actually...JFK-PBI (and FLL, RSW, MCO, TPA) is running at a 99.9%+ LF up until Sunday on B6. But for some reason LGA isn't nearly as busy. So I guess my father is in pretty good hands if he's cancelled; though LGA isn't as convenient to his house, I'm sure he'll make the trek up there if he can get rebooked.

Very interesting day for a snowstorm to say the least. This week was supposed to be very busy anyway as most schools are closed next week and is traditionally one of the busiest weeks of the year.

I was tracking some flights from last night, and this was interesting.

DL 150 JFK-VCE:

New York (JFK) February 11 07:15pm Diverted Venice (VCE) February 12 09:25am Diverted Diverted See Below
New York (JFK) February 11 07:15pm (February 11 08:43pm) St John'S (YYT) February 12 03:45am (February 12 04:12am)

Diverted to St. John's! Anyone know what is going on there?

I'm sure that the airlines are thanking their lucky stars that this didn't happen next week. A snowstorm on the first weekend of Presidents' Week would have been an absolute disaster - everybody is traveling then (myself included), as different from regular Spring Break, all of the schools in the country have the exact same week off.

intereting to look at http://www4.passur.com/jfk.html as there are at best 4 planes in the air at this time over NYC/NJ air space. One includes a B744 trying to land at JFK but looks like its circilcing over eastern LI for some time now. The other 3 are circling over Sussex NJ.

Actually, all you have now are two 744's flying around JFK, one at 9600 feet the other at 2600 feet. Really no where for them to go at this point. I would imagine they originated in Europe, and I guess that they are waiting for a runway at JFK to be cleared of snow for landing? Anyone care to elaborate further?

15 inches in NY as of 10 am EST.

EWR/LGA still closed. City has pulled the plows off the road because it can't keep up with 2-3 inches per hour and the blowing snow.

A real SNOW day.

Until LGA closed, the flight I was originally scheduled to be on was operating 45 min late. The new US hasn't figured out that to precancel flights like DL and AA is better and less chaotic overall for the customers..but then again, the Sand Castle is not familiar with snow now are they?

In retrospect I am fortunate I cancelled my trip--I would have never gotten home.

22.8 inches of snow in Central Park, NYC as of 1100 am EST.

Second-largest snowstorm in New York City history; largest is 26.4" in 1947.

EWR Closed. LGA Closed. JFK officially open. Port Authority and City have stopped plowing until the heavier snow passes.

Snow should end mid-afternoon.

Please, anybody! Post some pictures!!!!!!
I am 33 years old and have seen snow 2x's in my entire life!!! I guess I should feel fortunate right about now though. As I sit in Tampa it is 50 degrees. That is FREEZING for Florida and almost unheard of considering that 52 is supposed to be the high today. It is windy as heck here too!

How do ya'll drive and get to people in these conditions?
If the snow plows have even given up cuz they cant keep up with the snowfall how on earth do ya'll do it? What happens if someone has a heart attack or something? Are they just basically out of luck I guess? Wow, I never thought about that!

One of the local NY TV Stations said a CO Flight actually pushed back at LGA around 0900 lcl and taxied out, I believe a 738 to IAH. Anyway they said the Captain felt conditions where unsafe (very wise) and the flight returned to the gate and cancelled. While I am surprised CO attempted to operate this flight, I applaud the Captains excellent judgement call !

Decisions:

CO it seems decided to fly their European flights out towards EWR and choosing to stopover in Canada somewhere and waiting from that point for EWR to open whereas Delta simply cancelled their European flights to JFK from their point of origin. What makes the most sense here? How are the CO passengers inconvenienced if at all?

According to the FAA ATCSCC OIS page, LGA, EWR, and JFK are all CLOSED..

Justr checked the METARs, and LGA has has 21 inches of snow, EWR also 21 inches, and JFK has 16 inches. It's already stopped snowing at BWI, and soon will at PHL, but the New York airports still have some time left in the snow, so their snow totals should rise.
