5,000th 737 Rolls Out Today!

Mon Feb 13, 2006 6:17 pm

http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/htm...echnology/2002802118_boeing13.html

Congratulations to Boeing. Anybody have any information regarding the first flight from RNT? I'm in town for a few more days and wouldn't mind being there!

I would guess that the plane will fly to wherever WN takes delivery of their planes.

If it's anything like Airbus, there would be at least one test flight by Boeing, then at least one (very rarely a second) acceptance test flight by WN prior to the delivery flight.

I feel old. I remember Boeing delivering their 737th 737 (it was a -200 and it went to UK charter airline Orion).

It'll fly from RNT to BFI for pre-delivery testing first. I'm curious to know when this flight will be, as I'd like to be there to watch...I've lived in the Seattle area for 21+ years, and I've yet to see a 737 take off from RNT.

Yes, a test flight is required by the FAA, prior to delivery. Yes, WN, like most airlines will also test fly (acceptance flight) it prior to delivery.

I can remember the first delivery of the first B-737, she was a -100 and went to LH. I can also remember the B-707-100 water wagons being delivered, so you are not that old. LOL.

Congrads to Boeing, and the B-737, on another great milestone. BTW, in case anyone asks, the 5,000 B-737 is a -700, with winglets and no "eye brows".

Are the aircraft assembled at Renton usually painted at BFI as well?

This thread is not entirely true.

N230WN made its f/f on 1 Feb as BOE278, RNT-PAE-BFI in full c/s.

2 Feb BFI-BFI.

3 Feb BFI-YKM-BFI.

10 Feb BFI-RNT for 5000th 737 ceremony.

It will deliver to SWA today from RNT so I'm told.

f/f details have been up on my webpage since 1 Feb. http://www.selcalweb.co.uk/boeing.htm

I'm a bit surprised that SWA isn't making a bigger deal of this milestone; it's not every day that you take delivery of the 5000th example of an airliner family. Still, what an amazing accomplishment this is for Boeing; it's very likely that we'll continue to see 737's flying passengers around well into the 2030's or 2040's.

There seemed to be some loose ends in the story that made me think this might be the case, I was waiting for someone to say it'd already flown. What's interesting to me about this is that the aircraft landed back at RNT on Friday. It's my understanding that new 737s don't usually return to RNT after their first flights...I bet that would have been something to see. Shame too, I was around that area for the better part of the day on Friday.

Some are, some aren't. I've seen painted and unpainted aircraft sitting on the ramp at RNT and BFI.

Gunsontheroof,

Back when the 73NG program first got up and running, there were a few that flew back to RNT to have their overwing exits modified to the current pop-up version as the original batch, up to line number 25? had the old style. All have the pop-up version now (BBJs?, not sure of this)...

But yes, very rare indeed to have one back to RNT.

Hmm, maybe wishful thinking here, but maybe it flew back to receive a special emblem, or marking to signify the 5000th 737?

I just think it is amazing how long lived the 737 family has been, and all the more so given that until the 1980s, it was not a profitable product line. With the 2nd and 3rd generations, it has well and truly demonstrated its value. With an 1100+ backlog, and probably some time before the 737 replacement (Y1) is launched, I wouldn't be surprised if we see the 737 pass the 7000 airframe mark (now there would be a nice target to aim for - the 7370th 737). Even more amazing is the posibility, raised in the Seattle Times article, that 737s could still be in service 100 years after the program was launched.

I am a bit surprised as well but when we were discussing on a previous thread, I posted a comment saying that since the winglets looked standard, maybe we were wrong in our assumption that a special livery would go on this plane. Another thought I had was maybe they would print the employee names of Boeing on the overhead bins like WN did with "Triple Crown One." You never know what WN is going to do though. They have surprised us before. I notice OPNLguy has not chimed in yet so maybe he know something like he did on "Slam Dunk One" and does not want to mislead the forum. I admire that.

Thanks for the flowers, but I have no inside info on this one. It's due into DAL about an hour after I get to work, so I'll find out what it really looks like when it rolls up, just like everyone else.  Wink

I suspect it's going to have some kind of decal up by the nose, or elsewhere, but we'll see...

This is pretty amazing to me, according to the below article, WN has bought and taken delivery of 515 737's over the year, that is over 10 % of the whole production run !!!!! What other mass produced, 1000+ units, airliner has sold over 10 % of production run to one airline? Off the top of my head, AA or DL and the 727 might be close, AA and the MD-80 ?

737 by the numbers

First order: Lufthansa German Airlines placed an order for 21 737-100s on Feb. 15, 1965. Southwest Airlines placed the first order for Next Generation 737s, 63 of them, on Nov. 17, 1993. Total orders: to date -6,138. Boeing still has more than 1,100 orders to fill, which is between three and four years' worth of production at current rates. First delivery: a 737-100 to Lufthansa on Dec. 28, 1967; the airline took two more the next day, the same day that United Airlines took delivery of its first 737-200. Total deliveries: Southwest Airlines is picking up the 5,000th 737 today. Of those, 1,878 have been Next Generation 737s. Boeing will deliver the 2,000th 737NG this summer. Most-recent orders: Boeing took orders for 39 737s in January, including 10 for Air China and two to Southwest. Biggest orders: 101 737-300s for United Airlines in 1985; 100 737-800s for RyanAir in 2002. Biggest buyers: Southwest, 515; International Lease Finance Corp., 417; GE Capital Corp., 243; RyanAir, 239; United, 233. Source: Boeing.com

An amazing milestone for a trusty workhorse icon of commercial aviation. Although the A320 family is now selling faster and may one day surpass this total, it'll take a long time to do it. Granted, the 737 had about a 20 year head start but it's still a remarkable achievement. The 737NG with winglets is one of the coolest looking small airliners; I especially like its sleeker (compared to the A320) nose profile, a classic look held over from the 707/727 families. It may not have FBW or cockpit commonality with other Boeings but in all other ways, it meets or exceeds the A320 in performance and economics. Congrats to BCA on this historic day!

AA and the 757.

AA has 143 757s. 1050 were built. That's >13.5%.

AA and the MD-80.

They have 354 (as of 2004 annual report). Total MD80s built were 1191. AA has >29.5%
Total DC-9 based aircraft built were 2438. AA has currently >14.5%. Over history (including 717s and DC9s they disposed of from TWA and other acquisitions like Reno, etc.) they had even more.

AA and the 727.

AA had 167 owned (not sure about lease) and there were 1831 built. Of course adding in TWA brings it to over 10%, but they never operated the TWA jets.

Delta accounts for 12.1% (117 of 965) of all 767 orders and at the end of 2004 had 13.3% (123 of 925) of the 767's delivered up to that point. Delta's MD-88 fleet of 120 aircraft is just above 10% of all the MD-80 family aircraft built. Delta and its merger partners (Western and Northeast) ordered 183 of 1831 (9.99%) 727's built, and I'm fairly certain they picked up additional 727's second-hand. At the end of 2000, Northwest had 172 (or 17.6%) of the 976 DC-9's built.
