The Rand Corporation has issued a new report critical of security at LAX; here's the link to the LA Times story

They recommend checkpoints outside the central airport to examine vehicles for bombs. They first made this recommendation in 2004. They note that the airport is particularly vulnerable to vehicle or luggage bombs. The report also notes that areas of LAX are overcrowded and make easy terror targets. The airport is considered to be California's top terrorist target.

Nothing new, its actually the 3rd rehash of an original report.
While it does make some decent recommendations from a security point of view, much of it is not very practical from an operations angle.

Also keep in mind, Rand while being a think tank, is not a neutral party to these studies. It makes quite a bit of money off consulting for the airport and in the report even concludes is should be retained for further follow on studies.

There are plenty of airports with sidewalks and passenger waiting areas next to the streets where vehicles can pull up to let passengers out. By this report shouldn't we be putting this into effect everywhere?

This is just a rehash of the hysteria that Jim Hahn passed around with his "Island off the 405" plan. If you wanted to cause a massive problem with the airport, you could fire an RPG Manchester Blvd. Airplanes fly in the open sky, you can't ever guarantee that they will be safe, you just need to take precautions that are actually practical. Searching every car that drives onto World Way isn't practical at all. It would look like the Niagara Falls border crossing on a summer weekend.

when i was in Tel Aviv, every single car that went into TLV was searched for bombs (mirrors under the car, searched the boot, etc). in fact, they searched everyone no matter where u went (even mall garages too). grated, its a lot smaller country, they do have security pretty tight and shit still happens unfortunately. something LAX can learn, and other airports here. at LAX the TSA seemed rather clueless or disorganised. long queues of people, turning off the escalators and allowed 10 up a time (bc the damn metal detectors were like a few metres from the up escalator).

Anyhoo, I hope they don't change too much because I enjoy spotting there and I wish they even opened it up a bit more for the planespotters among us. Give us a paid observation deck and seach us if you must, but don't make it even harder for us to spot at such a varied location. Please?

Um, TLV handles 9 million passengers per year and is the number one airport target of terrorism in the world. LAX handles 62 million passengers per year, nearly all coming by small scale ground transport. There is a massive difference between the two. LAX is crawling with police and security. It is as secure as it will ever be and still be able to handle traffic as efficiently as it does.

It is interesting that there are vehicular searches done at some US airports, but not at others. Certainly the logistical issues of searching all the vehicles at LAX would be daunting. But if it is necessary at some airports, you would think they'd work out some way to do it at others.

Actually, vehicular searches are randomly done at all parking structures at LAX as well as at the entrance to World Way during heightened security levels
