Cheap Flights On 'rare' Airliners

Mon Feb 20, 2006 7:14 pm

Hi all,

Planning a few flights on airliners I haven't flown on before, and I was wondering if anyone have other ideas for cheap flights on 'rare' airliners... Of course we have would famous Airevents, and I am looking very much forward to see what they will come up with this year... But this thread is dedicated scheduled airlines....

What is 'rare'? Well lots and lots of airliners are getting rare these days because of the B737, A32S, ERJ and CRJ successes...

First a few of the one I found when searching the net...... Flights are cheap but they are not all flying from the most accessible airports. Anyway cheaper to do it now, that having to go to Africa or Southeast Asia to catch up in a couple of years.

Air Norway Ålborg(AAL) - Oslo(OSL) o/w NOK499 (~EUR70) incl tax. on a Swearingen SA-227AC Metro III

Euromanx/Emerald Liverpool(LPL) - Isle of Man(IOM) rtn GBP66 (~EUR100) incl tax and fees on a BAe ATP

Aurigny Jersey(JER) - Guernsey(GCI) o/w GBP35 (~EUR50) incl tax and fees on a Shorts 360 or a BN.2 Trislander

Iberia Madrid(MAD) - Gran Ganaria(LPA) o/w EUR57 incl tax and fees on a Airbus A340-600
I also see IB operates B747s to Tenerife during summer, would anyone know if that is B744s or the 'rare' B743?

That was all for now, looking forward to see you ideas, and I will post more as I find it....

All the best, Michael

Does this flight originate/terminate anywhere other than MAD or LPA ?

AF operates (or at least used to operate) 744 machines in the peak season from PAR to Corsica - flight time probably 1-1.25 hours!

B742 on Air Plus Comet between MAD and BCN (and vice versa) starting at 60 Euro for a roundtrip. Flight is scheduled only once weekly and is in fact just a ferry flight for the BCN-PVG-BCN route.

For Metro III flights, OLT, European Air Express and Dauair (all in Germany) offer cheap tickets. I´m flying ZRH-BRE on an OLT Metro in a couple of weeks for 100 euros one way. Dauair has nice student fares (I think 39 euros one way).

I believe LGW (Luftgeselschaft Walter) is also flying this route with comparible prices with the Do-228, also a very rare aircraft I never flew yet on so I might take this route as well in the spring to log it.

Germany-Spain can be an interesting way to log 757-300 and A-310s (Hapag) for under 100 euro, the German airport websites are pretty good to find out where and when they fly.

In the UK, Skybus is flying DHC-6s.

The UK and the Netherlands have active preservation groups (Air Atlantique in England, DDA and so on from Lelystad in the Netherlands) offering pleasure flights in DC-3, Dove, Twin Pioneer, F-27 and Catalina, often at airshows etc.

Your question is a bit eurocentric. For readers in other parts of the world, here are some fun suggestions
- In the Philippines you can fly YS-11, ATP, CN-235 and DHC-7 with Asian Spirit.
- In Malaysia you can fly DHC-7 of Beryaja to the isles.
- In Indonesia, CN-235, C-212 and F-28 are still common on domestic flights.
- In Honduras, HS-748 and F-27s (including the final operational US built Fairchild 27s) are still operating with Air Atlantic
- In Guatemala RACSA might still fly Guatemala City-Tikal with the Nord 262, although I have unconfirmed reports they ceased this year. Can any central American member update us?
- In the USA, take a sightseeing flight over the Grand Canyon with Do-228 or Twin Otter
- In Iran, fly 707 with Saha of course, or 727 of Iran Air, Iran Aseman, or Tu-154s of Caspian, Iran Air Tours and others.
- In South Africa, there are Convair 440s, DC-3, DC-4, Ju-52 etc available for pleasure flights, and DC-9 (1Time) 727 (Nationwide) on domestic regular flights.
Most above flights cost me in the 40-80 euro range only.
Have fun!

Interesting topic!

The Aviodrome museum at LEY (Lelystad Airport, not too far from AMS), offers some nice sightseeing flights in rare aircraft. They're offering flights on the Fokker F.27 (actually the first production F.27), Antonov An-2, Catalina (including a water landing!) and Fokker S-11. Prices range from 89 to 289..

VLM, a flemish carrier, flies Fokker F50 aircraft out of AMS, RTM, ANR and LCY for reasonable prices.. A landing at LCY should be quite an experience I think. I'll definitely try them once when I have the money..  Smile

Lan Chile offers MAD-FRA-MAD (or vice versa) for round about 160 Euro on a nice and shiny A340-300.  Smile

HF's A310 will be gone by late April 2006, so hurry up if you want to get on one of those.

One A310 is based in NUE, flying to the Canary Islands on days 12345--

It all depends where you come from as to what you consider rare of course, but NW can get you on some rare birds for relatively few €€. I was chuffed to fly a DC9 and DC10 with them last year but I suppose for those living in DTW/MSP this is nothing out of the ordinary. Same when I flew an AirTran 717 - very rare here in the UK.

oh and contrary to what I reported earlier, the three Sun-Air ATPs have been repainted and returned to service in current BA colours ! So it will be possible to fly northern Europe with a UK flavor in an ATP for quite a while (otherwise they wouldn't have bothered to repaint them, right?)

When you are in Thailand you should check out Orient-Thai. My girlfriend and I flew HKT-BKK in Business Class (we were the only pax on the upper-deck) and it was very cheap. Additionally was the flight operated by a 747-100 which is a pretty rare plane nowadays.

Just booked myself on it in order to finally nail the MD-90:

Blue1 is offering twice daily HEL-STN-HEL flights on the MD-90 this summer, with prices starting at 78 Euro all incl. for one segment. Not too shabby for a three-hour flight with full meal and beverage service on a rare airliner. Big grin

Now that Ukraine does not require tourist visas, there are plenty of cheap routes on AN-24 and TU-134 within the country for you to take. Nothing like the scream of Kuznetsov DK-30's!

MEA707 & Canberra,
The only F28 flights here are Pelita... Merpati stopped flying it... and only 1 flying with Pelita... Batavia stopped flying the F28 already... all the other operators have stopped even their charter flights mostly... *I hear this is due to an AD issued regarding engine titanium blade modif requirements*.

For Indonesia...
Shorts 330/360 Jakarta Halim to Bandung
Merpati CN235 Jakarta Halim to Bandung, Medan-Dumai-Pekanbaru (They've added some more CN235 flights but I can't remember where to). Still heaps of F27 flights (with various airlines too)
Merpati C212s fly on the outposts...
Merpati Twotters in Indonesian Papua
SMAC C212s fly out of Medan to Aceh
Jatayu 727, based in Medan.
If you want F50, go on Riau Airlines from Pekanbaru to Batam, Singapore and some other places near there.
MD90s you can fly Lion Air from Jakarta.

Just giving you guys info so you don't get disappointed when you're here... many changes over the past 6 months.

There´s a route which is exotic itself and also the planes used on it are getting rare in europe: HAM-BRE (continuation of the flight from Bristol) on OLT Saab 340 and Saab 2000 for a fixed price of only 60 euros one way, including taxes/fees! I might try it one day as i´ve never been on a Saab 2000. the return trip can easily be done by train for 17 euros.
That DTM-THF route is awesome: competition between dauair (metro) and LGW (do228) leads to low prices, I´m thinking of doing this in summer. awesome aircraft, awesome airport (THF), awesome city (Berlin), rather cheap.

I know of some outfit in the US that still flies the DC-9, DC-10, and 747-200, called Northwestern or something like that. I don't think that they are that expensive.

A friend of mine recently told me that there is a package deal for Americans wishing to travel to North Korea for the Arirang games. He got a promotion from it (through the Association of Asian Studies, an academic organization studying Asia). You get to fly Air Koryo on that, probably either on their TU or, perhaps more likely, their IL-62s!

If I get a hold of that promotional material I will post it here so people can contact the company in question if interested.

If you are being really picky about rare airliners, the LHR-MAN shuttle sees the A320-100 series aircraft every day. Very few of that variant were built before Airbus started building the -200, and BA inherited the order for the aircraft when they took over BCal.
Lead me not into temptation, I can find my own way there...

Here's some of mine that you guys might be able to help me out on...

707: We all know Saha, but is LADE still flying it? What about flights on a tanker, or a KC135?

741: Orient Thai and Iran only?

747SP: Just Syrian and Iran? Can you buy tkts on the IR flight NRT-PEK-NRT?

TU134: Just inter-Russia?

IL62: Same?

For ATP's, try the Azores www.sata.pt
