Same Route Same Airline Leave Minutes Apart?

Sat Feb 25, 2006 1:39 pm

I was checking out flights on AA.com MIA-LGA and LGA-MIA and found that AA 2137 from LGA-MIA and AA 1341 LGA-MIA leave 4 minutes apart. 2137 leaves at 10:00am and 1341 leaves at 10:04am. Is this right? Why would AA have two of the same flights leave at the same time I know demand on LGA-MIA is big but that big? Any other flights that anyone knows of like this? Same airline same route that leave minutes apart?

What date did you used to check this, if it is within February or the first week of March it could be a ferry flight that AA would like to make use of.
It's not just the destination, it's the journey.

America West does the same between LAS and PHX last time I checked. Two flights leave about the same time, this happens many times a day roughly on the hour.

Sometimes you do see two flights fly wing-to-wing on the same route between two cities.......it mostly happens on routes between two hubs or on a route from a very key city to a major hub. Its simply a capacity issue - an airline needs lots of seats between two cities at a specific time - due to demand and/or for connection and feed purposes.

In this case, AA needs 300+ seats between LGA and MIA at this specific hour, thus two flights........the flights arrive in time for connections to AA's caribbean network out of MIA, and its a convenient time for leisure pax going on vacation, and, as mentioned above, on certain days of the week, lots of cruise pax are headed to MIA and the timing of this flight is ideal. In the old days, AA could have used a domestic DC10 for the departure, but with most US carriers including AA using smaller aircraft with greater frequency on most routes, the only alternative to come up with 300+ seats is to fly two seperate flights on the route.

I recall working at CMH in 1995....

I had to check the old timetables to verify this information, but:

HP flight 934, Boeing 737-200, Depart LAS 11:09pm, Arrive CMH 5:58am

HP flight 1748, Airbus A320, Depart LAS 11:10pm, Arrive CMH 5:50am.

Both flights were operated daily.
The opinions expressed are my own and do not necessarily reflect those of Southwest Airlines.

Not unusual . . .

ANC-SEA sees a lot of flights in the middle of the night on AS . . . Throw in there a UA and CO flight also.

AS 198 01:05 dep
AS 154 01:54 dep
AS 142 02:10 dep
AS 126 02:40 dep

You'll also see just about hourly departures to SEA during the day all summer long.

AS 808 06:05 dep
AS 156 07:00 dep
AS 2 08:00 dep
AS 190 09:00 dep
AS 884 10:05 dep
AS 186 11:00 dep
AS 92 12:36 dep
AS 98 12:44 dep
AS 192 14:11 dep
AS 94 14:50 dep
AS 148 15:30 dep
AS 164 16:30 dep

And there are three more AS departures before 11:00pm.

Toss in another US and CO departure . . .

Correct. There's two flights from PHX that arrive at LAS at approx 1120, as well as two more at 1445 and at 2051. We also sent two flights to PHX at 0955 to feed their 1230 east coast bank. Plus, we have a 0645 and 0700 flight from LAS-PHX, as well as LAS-LAX at 0700, 0800, and 0915.

I think BA, QF, TG and BR have flight from LHR-BKK within minutes too. Also LH, TG for FRA-BKK flights, may be CDG-BKK on TG and AF too.
I don't remember the exact time though.

Really a different issue - you are talking about different airlines flying at similiar times - on your example of flights on the London-Bangkok route, there is a limited window of when flight times make sense for pax convenience and connections, thus most flights leave Europe late in the evening.

Here, the issue is one airline flying two or more flights on the same route at roughly the same dep and arr times.

DTW-MEM
Flt 283 leaves at 12:01 ,and flt 291 leaves at 12:05

Today, 283 was an A320, and 291 was a 757-200

UA has departures from DEN to ASE very close together during peak hours, due to there being lots more people than can fit on a Bae-146.

JALways has 2 flights NRT-HNL (JO74 and JO72) scheduled within 15 minutes of each other. In actuality, these flights many times leave within minutes of each other and arrive many times at the same time in HNL.

What's really insane is DL's doubling RJ's to the same destination within 15-20 minutes of each other in many places...

Wonder why they're in financial trouble...But I digress, I haven't payed the money to get the fancy degree that would qualify me to run an airline like DL.

I guess this goes to confirm Boeings vision of the future....lotos of point to point stuff and the WBs for use in long range flights.

A widebody would be more efficient per passenger. However, I have had a few flights cancelled and before I could get angry they told me not to worry because a plane is leaving in 30 minutes. I assume they are cancelling one of the flights. That ability might make it more efficient than an widebody which would have to fly only half full.

The airlines seem to be doing a good job of this overall as I remember flights especially in the US used to often be half full. I have not been on a near empty plane in years except for Croatian Airlines which is either completely full or almost empty.

Well, actually you can kind of conclude anything you want. Your conclusion is fine with me, but you could also conclude that higher capacity aircraft (VLA) will be needed in the future. If traffic between any 2 points (call it point to point or hub to hub) grows, at some level a VLA makes more sense economically than 2 smaller aircraft flying side by side.

British Airways fly to Sydney twice a day, and the two flights leave about 15 mins apart, around 10pm. Same coming back to London, they push back about ten minutes apart and fly wingtip to wingtip all the way back to Heathrow, 2/5 of the way round the world, landing a few minutes apart.

To agree with what was said above, UA has an 8:53 777 departure from DEN-ORD and an 8:54 737 departure DEN-ORD. I feel bad for those people who end up on the 737 when they could get all of the extra amenities on the 777 (PTV's, First Suite instead of 38 inch pitch...)

I remember back in the 90's when US Airways was US Air and had lots of flights out of EWR. On the EWR-PIT runs there would be 2 aircraft leaving at about the same time during the evening rush. This made sense to me back then because US didn't have bigger aircraft really (both were on a 737 variant usually, sometimes a DC9 or even an F100).

It was a good way to keep capacity up on a heavy route that could support the seats. Sad days now at EWR for US, I think most of the flights there are on some sort of RJ.

Cheers,
John

I'm pretty sure LH has flights that leave Cairo minutes apart for Frankfurt. One originating in Sana'a and the other somewhere else in the region - possibly Cairo itself.

I was once on the first of two FL flights from MCO-ATL that were scheduled to depart within five minutes of each other and they did. That was back in 2002 though. It was a B717 and DC-9-30 and I had the DC-9. I figured it was because DL operates heavies on the route so that the two FL flights would provide a competing capacity for one DL heavy but I'm sure there are many other reasons..That was my fleeting thought at the time..

Hmph

Much of last year, I was commuting between HKG and ICN. Asiana and Korean Air had two flights per day. The morning flights left at approximately the same time and arrived at approximately the same time. The midnight flights (actually 00:30) did likewise. I was always on Asiana (*A, you know) and always got ticked off seeing the KE flight ahead of us on the runway. My only *A option to fly at a different time would have been Thai.

This is the cause of much of the airport congestion that people kvetch about. If flights were spaced out more rationally this would be reduced, but the carriers feel they need to do this for commercial reasons, either due to connections, or to compete more successfully.

I don't even want to get into the ICN to TAO (Qingdao, China) route which threw Air China into the mix.

Let's say that we have 2 733's leaving LGA for MIA at about 4 min apart...

Wouldn't it make more sense to just cancel one flight and upgrade equipment to a 762 or 752?

Is there an economic reason for running two 733's instead of the single widebody?

In fact, HP has (at least) two flights from PHX-LAS that depart and arrive at the EXACT same time, and are the same type of aircraft! I'm referring to HP577 and HP8, departing PHX at 8:40 PM and arriving LAS at 8:51 PM, both on A320s.

In reverse, HP62 and HP418 do the same thing, departing LAS at 12:55 PM and arriving 3:06 PM, both on A319s.

Its also quite common with the DUB-LHR route with both Aer Lingus and BMI operating regular services to and from LHR. quite often you will find that there could be up to 7 or 8 flights between both airlines during peak hours.

Add on other services operated by Ryanair, Aer Arann, BA & City Jet to other london airports and you will have quite a lot of flights to London.

Not the same airline but VS and BA 744's leave SFO for LHR minutes apart. The same case applies for SFO-FRA UA and LH 744's. You can normally see them taxiing to the 28's one behind the other

RE: Same Route Same Airline Leave Minutes Apart?

Sun Feb 26, 2006 8:38 am

Always cracks me up when I am pushing a flight back from the gate, with an aircraft pushing next to me that is heading to the same destination. One pretty much follows the other. This usually happens because of a delay. But at SAN, WN's SAN-OAK flights are so frequent, it doesn't take much of a delay for one OAK flight, to have it leave at the same time as the next OAK flight.

US Airways has some PHL/CLT-MCO/FLL flights that leave within minutes of eachother, usually on larger equipment (752/321) too. I remember sitting at my gate in MCO waiting for a flight that was scheduled to depart to PHL at 2:00 (A321), and the gate next to us had a 757 going to PHL at 2:10. Weird, but both were chock full of people.
