Emirates Expansion Plans

Mon Feb 27, 2006 6:15 am

I've been studying Emirates Airline. I am amazed by their rapid expansion. I was just wondering where they plan to expand next.

I was thinking that they may want to serve places such as Washington, DC, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Tokyo, etc.

Any thoughts?

Emirates never stops expanding!

They want to fly to Tokyo, but they cannot recieve the slots they wan't. They already fly to NGO and KIX  Smile

Emirates also wants to fly to Toronto, but Etihad beat them to it. Currently I think EK cannot as they cannot receive slots  Smile

EK will double DUS flights this year  Smile

EK also want more Australia flights, but are only aloud a certain amount of weekly flights currently!

They are also looking at adding the 787 or A350 into their fleet in the future! They currently have the 777-200LR, 777-200LRF's, 777-300ER's, A340-600HGW's, A380-800's and A380-800F's on order!

They currently have only 1 new destination designated for this year.

"Emirates’ daily services to Hamburg, its fourth German gateway, will start on 1st March 2006. Hamburg is the country’s second largest city and long-time centre for maritime commerce. Flights will depart daily from Dubai on an A330-200 in three-class configuration, offering 237 seats and 13 tonnes bellyhold capacity. Flight EK059 will take off from Dubai International Airport at 0855 hrs arriving at Hamburg International Airport at 1255 hrs. Return flight EK060 will depart the same day at 1535 hrs, arriving Dubai at 0045 hrs the next morning."

San Francisco/Los Angeles, will they try to serve both or one or the other? I'd love to see them here at LAX, but also would like to see SFO continue to fill the International terminal.

if they had to choose between SFO and LAX, I think they would go for LAX first...

Actually youre forgetting about the huge indian/pakistani and african population in the Bay area and SFO..

SFO is definately gonna be their next step into the US market.

They nearly announced it in summer 2004 before the oil prices shot up which as a result unprofitable on the A340-500.

Guess well all have to wait till 2007 when the 772LRs come in.

I believe that there will be about 5 different cities in the US when it is all said and done: SFO, JFK, ORD, LAX, and IAH. Would they ever consider MIA service? I don't think the market there would be as strong as the other 5 cities, which is why it isn't getting mentioned as much as the others. IMO, SFO will come next. Maybe it is just wishful thinking, but seeing EK at SFO would be awesome...especially if EI starts service as well.

Two things surprise me about Emirates and their expansion:

1. They have not acquired some A320/737 class planes that could give them feeder services in and out of regional destinations such as the Muslim former Soviet republics (Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan etc) with whom they should have natural links (Emirates do not fly to any of these countries at the moment).

2. They have not developed an Asian hub, such as Bangkok or Hong Kong, which would given them access to Asia - Australia and Asia - Americas traffic

Good points, but wasn't there talk of EK developing a pacific island hub? I'm too lazy to google this, but I remember discussions here and elsewhere. Vanuatu?

The rumour from about 2 years ago was that EK were planning to use AKL as a hub for flights to North and South America. EK currently fly three times daily into AKL : DXB-BKK-SYD-AKL, DXB-SIN-BNE-AKL and DXB-MEL-AKL and all three flights arrive within about 2-3 hours of each other - so connections to places like LAX and SFO made sense.

However, that was just a rumour and nothing has happened since.

The thing about EK which annoys me is that they have now postponed or dropped a lot of their 'new' routes recently, like PEK (supposed to start in Feb 2006), NGO (supposed to start in Nov 2005) and GVA. They seem to change their minds a lot about new destinations and extra frequencies.

It will be great to see more of EK in USA, but even if they do announce something soon, don't be surprised if they delay or postpone the launch again!

Wouldn't make much sense. Flying through JNB or a mid-continent African City would make more sense for South America, as for North America, I can just see them going non-stop from DXB to all their destinations.

I hope EK develops an AKL hub. I also heard that EK will be starting flights to ADL soon and that they will continue to AKL. This will mean that EK will have 4 flights a day to AKL! More than any other destination in Australiasia. I hope EK do a DXB-Asia-AKL route, that'd be cool.

Assuming that New Zealand is more generous to outsiders than Australia with its "open skies" policy, what are the opportunities in using AKL as a "hub" for EK? ? Given that EK, like SQ, is unlikely to be allowed for many years by the Australian Government to fly on from the Australian part of its network through to the US, can EK instead fly on to the US (and maybe also South America) via New Zealand? After all, a hub usually is the centre of something, not the periphery (as AKL is now in the EK network). Given the quality of EK IFE and cuisine, flying from Australia to the US and onwards via AKL on an EK A380 (and later its B787-10's?) might be a nice option.

They are already drafting their proposal/authorization letter to the Argentine FAA as well as their intention letter to Aeropuertos Argentina 2000, to operate in EZE. We won't see anything new until mid-year because route proposal hearings take place every 6 months here in Argentina, were all the airlines in the country (or wanting to operate) have their say to the BoD.
EK has also started to recruit cabin crew here in Buenos Aires. No word on when they will start recruiting ground agents or CSRs

If the German Government decides to become the puppet of the oddball that is Lufthansa, can Sri Lankan operate DXB-STR and DXB-TXL ...etc, on behalf of EK, using EK aircraft leased to / operated by UL? This could be one way to get around Lufthansa pulling the strings from behind the scenes.  biggrin

If Emirates can manage to get a CO codeshare on this flight they will keep this plane full from Houston with all of the KBR new hires to the Middle East. It will also be nice to get the 0230 departure to MAN back. I used to fly this route quite a bit and was saddened when they moved it to later in the morning. Connections from KWI were ideal.

Would EK have rights to transport passengers from MAN-IAH and return??

would be interesting, as the would compete with PK's IAH-MAN flights (not that PK operates everyday)....PK have full IAH-MAN rights, as well as ORD-MAN rights...

I thought EK was flying DXB-CCU 6x a week, but the schedule only lists 3x a week!!! Anybody know why they changed?

They are initially going to start with three and then go on to six after a few months of service.

Quoting Emirates Skies (Reply 11):
Rumour has it that Emirates will fly the 77W to IAH via MAN, leaving Dubai during the 0230-0300 connections bank

Since EK already operate 2X daily into JFK,ive heard strong rumors that there are plans to operate one of those frequencies into either IAH or SFO instead of allowing them to sit there on the tarmac at JFK all day. but I they would have to seek govt. permission before that.
