Ryanair At Edinburgh, UK

Thu Mar 09, 2006 3:16 am

Hi All,

According to the Ryanair website, they have only one service to Edinburgh airport (DUB-EDI). Easyjet have 8 destinations serviced from Edinburgh.

Other than charges - is there any other reason why FR have only one service to the airport.

I would have thought that there would be demand for flights from many of FR's other destinations to the city.

With Glasgow getting alot of FR business, is it the case that Edinburgh don't want to be seen to be bullied on charges by FR?
Don't they wish to expand the amount of FR business??

I'd presume it's because EDI has higher landing fees than Prestwick, and FR are famous for prefering out of the way airports to the main/major ones.

Quoting Wrighbrothers (Reply 1):
higher landing fees

I had thought of that.

With exception to the taxes, is there not a significant opportunity for LCC operations (or other carriers) to develop routes out of EDI.

With FR and EZ expanding throughout Europe at a ferocious pace, finding under serviced airports seems similiar to getting 'blood out of a stone'.

Could an airline like Germanwings or BMI baby take advantage and open up the airport to expanded routes????

FR only started to flying to EDI to force Go out of DUB when they started DUB-GLA and DUB-EDI services. The route is obviously a money-maker but the EDI airport charges have meant FR will expand elsewhere before they expand there.

There is also the issue that they might dilute some of their PIK loads by starting "competing" services to the same destinations from EDI.
