SAS will receive 2 new A319's later this year and one of them will be painted in an old "Retro" livery.

I am looking forward to see one of those aircrafts wearing the retro look. I always loved the classic SAS look and on those pictures it looks great on the A319 as well. Just great

I'm sure this has been discussed several times before but why have SK chosen to order 2 A319s when they have sizable fleet of the similarly sized B73G? I'm aware they have a varied fleet but wanted to know the specific reason behind this specific order.

SAS already had options for A321s remaining, these were converted into A319s. Furthermore, the Airbuses are going to SAS Denmark who only operate A321s and MD-80s. All 737s are operated by either SAS Sweden or SAS Braathens. In reality SAS Denmark, SAS Sweden and SAS Braathens are separate airlines using the same name. There is competition between them which in some cases is really pathetic.

It actually looks great! What I don't like are those SAS titles on the engines, they just don't fit.
But I'm looking forward to seeing the Viking Ship livery come back again to SK!

I think the SK retro A319 looks just a little bit weird - the original design was never made to look good on an A319, and somehow it just doesn't seem to fit completely. Furthermore, the old SK design wasn't really that distinctive in the first place.
On the other hand, the retro LH Airbus looks absolutely great. Obviously the original designers of the old LH design were quite farsighted.
However, maybe the SK retro will look good in real life too...

I think it looks excellent on the A319 - MUCH better than the current livery which I always thought looked like it was designed by a commitee who's members couldn't quite agree on what they wanted. (And the one before that was just cheap and nasty looking!)
The old "classic" liveries often had a lot more style to them. If British Airways were to follow the trend, for instance, the original BEA "thin stripe" or later "Red Square" liveries would look good on the Airbus twins, and a BOAC "Golden Speedbird" B777 could look amazing! This year is the 60th anniversary of the beginning of BEA operations and it's split from the original BOAC after all - how about it BA?

Only sort of, DC-9s indeed carried the dragon ship livery but only the evolved version, with a simplified dragon's head and no red outline and only "SCANDINAVIAN" titles. The A319 livery, with a red outline and full "SCANDINAVIAN AIRLINES SYSTEM" titles, was in use from 1957-1966 and introduced with the DC-7C. When the Caravelles were delivered from April 1959 onwards, the cheatline was more streamlined and it is this version the A319 will carry.

what?!! The newest livery looks pretty good if you ask me.. the only thing is that I wish they would have painted those engines in a darker red color

The rumours are about 1946 retro schemes since both SAS and Braathens were founded this year.Whether one or two planes will be painted or just one with SAS on one side and BU on the other is still a secret.

I find the 3D-Aviation drawings awful and the reason for this is that they have mixed together three earlier colour schemes in to one
From the late 1950s came the red top shadow to the blue dragon head/line and the SCANDINAVIAN AIRLINES SYSTEMS on the fuselage. A correct late 1950s design on an A319 would have looked something similar to this:
The curved down white nose came in the late 1960s with the introduction of the new DC-9s and newer DC-8s. At the same time the red top shadow disappeared and the dragon ear got the red colour only. The blue line was moved upward and covered the whole window line. The wording on the fuselage was shortened to SCANDINAVIAN only. In addition to this a number of other small changes was done like the black nose tip, orange wing tips, a small SAS logo on the all metal motors was added, small SAS logos above the doors, the three crowns over the flags were simplified. A correct late 1960s design on an A319 would have looked something similar to this:
The third design 3D-Aviation is picking up elements from are the colours introduced in 1983 - all white fuselage and the destinctive multi-coloured belly belt (colours from the three country flags). 3D-Aviation picked the motor design from this C/S to put in to their interpretation - but up until 1983 all engine covers have been in metal colours. The larger SAS logo was applied to the engine covers for aircraft with under wing engines (like the 767), but for the MD-80 only the three flags were added and no logo. To be safe 3D-Aviation has put both elements on their design.
To conclude - I hope SAS Denmark will never use this awfull mixed 3D-Aviation design. If they do, I will stop using SAS imediately - and I hope a lot of you too will do the same!

Initially I hated the current scheme too, but after a few months it started to grow on me.
I think it looks very modern and sharp.
In particular the A330/340s really look quite stunning in the current livery.
The retro A319 scheme,...well, it just seems like such a bad match for an Airbus - the cheat line extends so far back beyond the tail rudder. It just looks unaesthetic/unbalanced...

I think the retro liveries are some of the best-looking planes flying today... It's not just beautiful... It carries history so it gains in meaning... Not all the airlines can think about a retro livery... (Imagine EK... It couldn't work at all)
I find it absolutely non-sense... they just did change some small features to try to improve the old livery for an A319... I would actually prefer a lot of slightly modified retro liveries to the actual liveries... LH euro-white and SK are 2 of them. And AZ doesn't need because their livery is already retro in itself (and first of all they have something different to think about...)
