Shortest 777 Flight?

Sun Mar 12, 2006 9:53 pm

Anyone know if this wins the prize? EK025 DXB-GLA has diverted to PIK due to GLA being closed thanks to snowfall. Apparently it will depart from PIK to GLA at around 1330, assuming GLA is open.

Must be around a 10 minute flight.

Not anymore. I heard they no longer use their 777's on that route at all. I was one of the lucky bastards to fly that route on a 777.

True. They have moved those planes onto the LAX-ATL route which will eventually continue on to TLV. They kept them on that route as a spare in case one of the other 777s went Mx. That way they could be close to ATL for the switchout.

IIRC didn't (or do they still) have the AA or UA flight from SJC to NRT that stopped in OAK for gas because of the shorter runways in San Jose? That would be short.

Wasn't that flight just a diversion? The scheduled flight was DXB-GLA. So technically its the OGG-KOA flight that is the shortest.

They usualy do LGW-MAN when they do (I presume you're thinking of BA). And it's of course not a schedual flight, just if flights are canceled.
LHR-MAN gets almost never gets anything bigger than a 767.

In terms of regularl scheduled flights, AA flys a daily repositioning flight between Rio De Jeneiro and Sao Paulo, Brazil with their 777 that continues on to Chicago. This has to be one of the shortest, but I don't know actual distance.

They have definitely stopped the 777 ATL-MCO. I flew on that trip a year going to and from MCO on the 777. It was my wife and two kids spring vacation and I specifically booked the 777 flights. It was awesome. I was too busy playing with the video games and movies to really enjoy the flight. The plane was HUGE!!!! It sucks they stopped it. We go down to Orlando every year during Spring break.

My next trip will be visit relatives in S. Cal. and I hope to book the 777 to LAX.

The first 772LR for PIA flew PAE-BFI on 2 Feb as BOE001, flying time 11 minutes and a distance of 25 miles, so ties with PIK-GLA !

Shorter than ATL-MCO

Surprised that all these flights are of the 772 nature -- I would have expected a 773 to claim the title of shortest flight (much as the 744Ds are used in Japan).

If we're including flights other than scheduled ones, then technically wouldn't a 777 flight that returns to it's point of departure after an emergency that occurs after takeoff count as the shortest flight?

This SQ 777 (routing CPH-SIN) had to return to CPH after developing engine trouble. I'm sure there's other similar examples out there.

Last time I visited Doha, I remember seeing an EK T7 on the DOH-DXB route. Did this flight originate in DOH? If so, this must be one of the shortest scheduled direct flights.

You are correct that they do not fly direct from chicago, but they do fly direct TO Chicago, which is exactly what I said. The outbound flight goes through Miami. I know this because I have made these flights several times, and because I live in Dallas, I get to take the 777 from Rio to Sao Paulo, but then have to abandon it for a 763 to DFW.

Yes, Thai regulary fly 777s on the BKK-CNX route. Shortest route used to be CAN-HKG, a distance of about 88 mi or equivelent to LAX-SBA. China Southern flew this route for a few years where the aircraft actually routed CAN-HKG-PEK-HKG-CAN. I flew HKG-CAN with CZ and it was flight time from take off to landing of 21 mins!!!

The777Man
Boeing 777s flown: UA, TG, KE, BA, CX, NH, JD, JL, CZ, SQ, EK, NG, CO, AF, SV, KU, DL, AA, MH, OZ, CA, MS, SU, LY, RG, PE, AZ, KL, VN, PK, EY, NZ, AM, BR, AC, DT, UU, OS, AI, 9W, KQ, QR, VA, JJ, ET, TK, PR, BG, T5, CI, MU and LX.. Further to fly.. LH 777

In that case, that would probably be the AA 777s flying between DFW and the MX base at AFW. 10 minutes each way if memory serves me well.

And that same route is probably one of the shortest 767 flights as well...
