Retired Medical Doctor Becoming A F/A

Sat Mar 18, 2006 7:48 am

I learned the other day that a friend of the doctor I visit was considering becoming an international flight attendant. I remember years ago on a flight to NRT on NWA a very well preserved older F/A was working that flight, and I over heard him saying he was new to the job and was a recently retired dentest who got tired of siting around gathering dust. I wonder if anyone has ever met or worked with any high level professionals like nurses or doctors who wanted to get out and meet people and see the world while it was still possible? Thanks friends.

Good for him. I would love to be a F/A at the age of 43. But, I can not relocate, it would have to be something based in DTW....

My mother went to nursing school to become an R.N. as at the time it was a prerequisite to becoming a "stewardess". (late 40s early 50s) So I would assume there were lots of nurses working as stewardesses at that time.

We had a retired and divorced Army Col. who became a F/A at NY in the 80's.

He was a great guy, who sadly has passed away.

Some people start careers for the money (doctor's, lawyers, etc),
they get established and build assets and money, get burned out
and then quit to pursue a dream. whether it's a flight attendant,
bed & breakfast operation, etc. I imagine they do this for fun and
not really for the money since they probably have investments or
savings to live on. I did hear through a friend of mine of another
guy who "retired" from his goverment job after 30 years with a
pension and also became a flight attendant, he wanted to see
the world and have fun doing it. he was in his 50's.

At CO we have several former doctors, lawyers, actors and other professions. During our hiring run in the late 90s we got several older FAs who were retired or scaled back in other careers. I'm not sure what the thinking was in our recruiting department, but all of them that I have flown with are fantastic FAs with good attitudes who give great customer service, and have some good stories to tell, as well.

Also, for some reason, we seem to have a lot of folks who have been in law enforcement, or are certified as paramedics or EMTs. Good skills to have in this line of work.

AA had a practicing MD on it's inflight staff. However I think he was one of the furlough victims so he may not be working anymore. I encourage this Doc to go for it, but caution him to realize unless he is working for a charter company that flies largely international he will not see much international flying until he has aquired significant senority. The exception would be if he is fluent in a language that the airline has NEED for.
Enough about flying lets talk about me!
