Wish I was taking this flight!

Checking the loads on ORD-PVG looks very good the first week, close to full in F, full in C and 90% booked in Y. Same for the PVG-ORD leg. I really hope it does better than NGO

One profitable route for UA. Now AA is Flying to Shanghai too. Isn't that a GREAT news or what? Plus I do wish either MU,CA or CZ could fly to ORD as well. Then that's really going to be fun.
Flew on UA 777 ORD-PVG-ORD,nice service. And loads are always good.

that route was cut because AA lost a lucrative Toyota contract....it was still making money (barely), however with the price of oil where it is, and the fact they needed the 777's for other routes, they decided to cut it............

time for AA to order some 787's..... biggrin

Anyone know if AA is doing anything special for this new inaugural long haul flight?

Curious in AUS.

Dont read too much into loads on an inaugural flight there will be lots of staff, dignateries and possibly media on the flight....lets see what happens in the weeks ahead. Certainly i would have thought Shanghai can support two flights a day from ORD.

I sure hope so. When AA launched ORD-DEL, I heard there were traditional Indian Bhangra dancers dancing to the beat of a dhol (drum) and there was an Indian buffet.

Also when AA luanched Del, for the return flight the AA recheck area in T5 had up signs and other things that said "Welcome New Dehli". I'm sure the same will be done in some fashion for PVG for the return flight

That's great to hear, so where do we all think AA will go next in Asia? I've heard HKG is on the radar, but have heard little else. It is great to see AA finally putting some emphasis on Asia after all these years. It'd be great to have one stand-out flag carrier for the US, instead of regional specialists (CO and DL to Europe, AA to LatAm, and UA or NW to Asia).

what I would personally like to see......ORD-HKG, LAX-HKG (ok, wont' happen, but I live in the west coast, so it would be nice), JFK-CAI (pushing my luck)..though Egypt is lumped with the whole "middle east" crowd, enough people in the United States tour Egypt, which would make it lucrative enough...especially if AA could get some freedom rights to India, say BLR or BOM.......that would make for a good mix

thus JFK-CAI-BLR/BOM........wouldn't be too bad

AA has rights to India that were purchased from TW. A search through the archives of the site would reveal the whole list. IIRC it was posted on here at some point within the last two years. Very, very interesting read, as well as all of the old routings that Pan Am used to operate as well.

thanks for the info. Smile

maybe I'll do some searching and reading when I have some time.....I think AA should take advantage of what they have and fly to new cities.......I think they would do well...

The 2 new 777s delivered early this year were put onto the new ORD-PVG route. AA is now completely full up again on 777 capacity, and has absolutely no spare aircraft to put anywhere, especially since the have leased a 777 to Boeing for flight testing for upto 1 year.

Quoting MGASJO (Reply 17):

Mine as well -- I think AA should fly ORD-HKG-SIN, but it would take 3 777s to operate a daily rotation, which AA currently does not have. A proposed schedule that I think would do exceedingly well:

Departs ORD 11:45a / Arrives HKG 4:20p (next day)
Departs HKG 6:00p / Arrives SIN 9:45p

Departs SIN 7:30a / Arrives HKG 11:15a
Departs HKG 12:55p / Arrives ORD 2:35p

But, alas, I don't make the decisions!

I think that HKG and possible CAN the rate at which China is growing is amazing. Once they see how much money can be made they will start to open up more once they get the rights. There is another round coming up soon but I think Delta will prob get them this time since they have no access to China now.

I agree. DL probably will get ATL-PEK the next time the China-US bilateral allows for more nonstop flights. However, I think HKG is governed by a separate bilateral. Not completely sure, but there's no harm in asking. I also hope for continuing AA's push into India and also adding a route to SIN or BKK. There is still plenty of money to be made in Asia and it's time AA steps up to the plate. NW and UA have had their day in the sun, specifically NW (I hope they get through Chapter 11).

They have the TW rights to India yes... but I don't think they are necessary. India and the USA have an "open-skies" agreement, so wouldn't it make those TW rights unnecesary and pointless to have?

Not necessarily, since there can always be issues with beyond rights in the example given of a flight that made a stopover on the way. Nonstop flights between the U.S. and India are no problem under the new open skies agreement.

They sure have some interesting marketing techniques to introdue the flight...
When I walked out of Union Station this morning, AA had about 5 workers in AA sweatshirts standing on the sidewalk handing out fortune cookies to all of the commuters. The fortunes read "Nonstop to Shanghai on American Airlines. Your Perfect Match." and "Nonstop to Shanghai on American Airlines. Looks Very Good." I thought it was pretty clever and the crowd seemed to be pretty responsive.

Well, we won't see AA in TLV.

Someone here said that next year, there will be more frequencies to China. However someone also said that this next round is only open to carriers that already serve China.

One of the new 777's has been delivered. N767AJ, 7CB, was put into revenue service a few days ago operating as flight 70 DFW-FRA for its inagural revenue flight. The second new 777 should be delivered shortly...

I have no idea what Boeing is using it for, or how long it will stay with Boeing. But while it is with Boeing, it not being used by AA at all, for revenue flights or otherwise.

I do not see where AA would fly in Asia. China requires a bilaterial agreement and the logical flight would be ORD-PEK, which would again go head-to-head with UA. ORD-HKG would also face off against UA and the fees at HKG are very high.

There is no US carrier that I know of that flies LAX-HKG, but if AA started it, UA would no doubt follow and restore service. Maybe they should look at that SJC hub again.

Well I wouldn't put it past them a few years down the road when/if the 787's come into the fleet and their finances stabilize. Maybe it is wishful thinking on my part but a sort of focus-city in SJC could work to Asia - NRT, KIX?, HKG?, China, if the bilaterals are relaxed. They won't waste a precious slot on SJC. Although this would be AA's third time trying to make a go of it at SJC it could feasibily work with their costs lower, booming traffic to Asia and the slow rebuild of the Silicon Valley. Admittingly the boom-boom high tech days are over but there is growth is the area - especially ties with Asia. We shall see.

I think AA could hold its own on ORD-PEK against UA, as they feel quite confident they can do so against entrenched UA on ORD-PVG.

HKG would be a piece of cake for AA. The intra-Asia feed from CX, coupled with AA's massive domestic feed into ORD, would virtually guarantee that AA would have absolutely no problems going up against UA in the market.

UA flew LAX-HKG before 9/11, but cancelled the route in the last few years.

SJC is, IMO, dead as a possible AA hub for Asia. While the new International addition to Terminal A is very nice, I doubt if you'll ever see AA add any more flights to Asia out of SJC. The market, post-9/11, post-tech bubble, is just not there, especially consider UA's huge Asian hub across the bay at SFO.

I wonder if TPE would still be on the list, I seem to remember from reading around here that LAX-TPE was planned or seriously considered pre 9/11. Could this still be on the planning board?

Don't count out the SJC area yet.......BigSFO brings up some good points along with the fact the SJC-area (Milpitas, Sunnyvale, Fremont, etc) area has quite a large Asian population as it is!

that being said, I only give it a 20%-30% chance at best... Sad

checkmark .....what Star Alliance carrier can compete with CX @ HKG? AA would do very well to HKG, especially out of ORD, where UA sends either one or two 744's daily...!

I'd bet on CX flying HKG-ORD before AA. They already fliy it as a cargo route.
