Shuttle Bus Hits Plane At DTW

Sat Apr 08, 2006 5:09 am

From a news station in Detroit...

An employee shuttle bus clipped the wing of an airplane at Detroit Metropolitan Airport Friday afternoon, according to airport officials.

The wing of a Northwest Airlines DC-9 was hit during the boarding process at the MacNamara Terminal, but it was unknown if the aircraft moved, according to airport representative Mike Conway.

One person who was on the plane suffered minor injuries, and two people who were in the shuttle suffered minor injuries, Conway said.

The employee shuttle drives on Zipper Road on the ramp, according to Conway. The bus drops off employees at various points along the terminal.

Conway said there are a lot of vehicles outside the terminal, but the aircraft always has the right of way.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.

Conspiracy Theory #5280: Maybe the driver just got tired of seeing NW DC-9s and wanted to take 'em out one-by-one. Big grin

Another conspiracy theory - Since NW wants to retire those DC9s anyways...maybe NW is quietly encouraging its workers to 'accidentally' damage those DC9s. That way, they'll get some insurance money out of it. This is much more preferable to just retiring the aircraft and getting no cash at all.

The perfect insurance scam.

You might actually be right. NWA flight was going to Syracuse and since it was this afternoon I'm thinking it was flight at 2pm so it was only 50 mins late leaving. Maybe after inspection it was cleared to go.

I would tend to think that if the impact was enough that three people were injured that the a/c would have sustained some kind of damage also. More then likely they used a spare for the flight. Where I worked previously, there was a delivery truck that backed in the leading edge of an MD80. It punctured a slat on the RT side. After documenting, AMM, SRM and CDL research then finally inspecting the damage it was about 2 hours before the a/c was ready for dispatch. (Alot of people, who thought they were important came over to take a look and just plain got in the way, accounted for much of time.)

LOL, the perfect insurance scam is right. Is itme or is NW cursed with ramp strikes? What's next, a honey bucket does a head-on with a DC-9 or A319?

When I was at DEN the busses were risky business. Durring that time the news even did a story on scared employees parking landside and walking over due to not wanting to ride the bus.

The aircraft sustained damage to the left wing and a substitute aircraft was used. They had film on the 11:00 news.

curious how that person on the plane got injured from just a wing clip unless the impact was strong enough to abruptly move the aircraft dc 9 is small but not that small

This isn't the first incident with our employee shuttle buses, either. A few of years ago, there was actually a fatality. The bus hit and killed a 23 year old single mother. Reports said that it was completely the deceased's fault, but who knows. I haven't ridden that bus in years, ugh, I hate it. I guess it's true what everyone says about us Michigan drivers!

One night in LAS, a shuttle bus driver cut right in front of one of our aircraft pulling into the gate, causing the aircraft to come to a quick stop. Fortunately, no injuries resulted but we did catch the event on tape and sent the video into the county. I hope serious action was taken against that driver. That was the golden rule they preached in airport badging class - aircraft ALWAYS have right of way.

I remember a few years ago when a UA employee shuttle bus broadsided an ACA CRJ in ORD on a taxiway resulting in extensive damage to both the A/C and the bus. Five people on the A/C and the bus driver were injured. I have to agree with those who say that some of these bus drivers are dangerous.
