Cactus Callsign To Remain!

Sat Apr 08, 2006 10:38 am

Just read in our company news letter that the "Cactus" call sign is all but certain to be the US airways combined callsign.

Cactus callsign = 2nd best callsign ever.

#1 callsign = BA's speedbird.

With a callsign like Cactus, the "new" US Airways is destined to be the new pricks on the block.  wink

I always used to wonder why they used "Tee Double-you Eh" - 4 syllables, and not "Trans World" - 2 syllables. Isn't brevity fairly important in vocal radio communications?

Why would they keep cactus? Their biggest market is going to be the east coast. No cacti there. And besides, the company is called "US Airways." Hmm.. I don't get it.

I was wondering the reasoning, too, and here's some ideas I came up with.

  • HP has more pilots than US mainline
  • "Cac-tus" compared to "U-S-Air"--2 syllables to three, also stands out more in communications.
  • It's another subtle way to show how HP is the top dog in this merged company
  • Which is more creative and probably has a cooler history to it, honestly?
  • While their biggest market is East Coast, they *are* based out in the desert.

Hopefully, someone will be able to confirm or negate something.

That's true. Although I can't help but think of what you'd call one of their birds in turbulence. (Hint, think MickeyD's, lol  wink  )

"Cactus" and "Speedbird" are also good ones.

Yes-clipper was classy and you knew the blue meatball was heading home or off to some foreign, exotic land that we would see in our imaginations.

Question-did AA ever use EAGLE? For some reason I thought I had heard this one time listening to a scanner.

Also-AS as "Eskimo?"
AC-as "Maple"??

Air florida-"sunshine"??

UA-"Friendship"??

they could go on and on ....just thinking out loud.

Cheers

I dont see this emphasized enough, HP bought out US, if the took the US name, which makes a lot of sense due to the route structure, I could almost guarantee that they were keeping the cactus callsign, as a reminder of their origins.

You might be thinking of how they were often refered to as "T-Way". On a side note I am sure that made it onto the radio as the callsign on more than one occasion.

So the original HP coughed up the cash to buy out US Airways? That's news to me.  Smile I seem to recall it being essentially a true merger financed by outside companies that formed a new holding company - US Airways Group - part 2 - which than put both companies under the new parents. It was also stated, almost word for word, that for accounting purposes HP would be listed as the acquiring company to keep things simple. Don't worry...the HP people have enough to be proud of - most of their guys are running the new company.

Anyway...enough of the whining about who bought who. Its over and done with. I'm not shocked that Cactus is being kept once the certificate merge takes place. They are headquartered in Tempe now...why not? There is a lot of give and take in this merger...consolidation. The HP management was retained, the US Airways name was kept, the HP headquarters was picked, the US Airways operating certificate will be kept, etc.

I haven't seen much of a shift towards merger besides the livery change. They still have seperate flights, and at YYZ atleast, the US/HP desks are 3 for HP, 3 for US. The sites haven't come togeather...

Can't wait to see the finished product though!

I like keeping 'Cactus'; it adds class to the brand. And in keeping with fun callsigns, I think AA should change from 'American' to 'Yankee'. And maybe AC should be 'Canuck' and WN should be 'Wal Mart'.
