Why Do Pax Do This? (Photo)

Fri Apr 21, 2006 2:36 am

You've just landed, the seatbelt sign goes out with a chime - followed by the snapping & clunking of seatbelts...

Is it me?

Or does everyone have to reach for the overhead bins and stand there for five minutes waiting for the jetbridge to be connected..

Always seems to happen... what's the problem with it?

All the PAX want to get out of the plane and to immigration and/or arrivals, so therefore want to deplane the aircraft as quick as possible!

One of my largest irrational pet-peeves are people who stand in the aisle for 10 minutes doing nothing, and THEN, once the way in front of them is clear, grab their bags and check their seat, delaying everyone behind them for a 30 seconds to a minute while they do what they could/should have done earlier...

When you clean planes, you stand and wait for everyone to get off the plane before you can go up and clean it. It's a real pain in the ass. But what are you gonna do? Brand 'em with a cattle prod? Grab the bullhorn at the back of the plane and scream "Move it, assholes?" I don't think so.

But what makes it more funny, you always see those people at baggage claim. I always wait, especially if I checked bags, that way by the time you do get to baggage claim the luggage has already come out. So they basically stand there for nothing only to wait longer at baggage claim. It's just impatience.

This happens all the time but the most extreme of these was when I came off a 12hr flight from CPT a couple of months back. The whole F cabin had left before the plane had even come to a halt, let alone the seatbelt sign switched off. I felt an utter fool sitting there as everyone retrived their bags from the locker beside me and left whilst I still had my seatbelt on  Embarrassment Once the light did go off I got up and gathered my things and was left in a line behind...the guy who had got up about two minutes beforehand! No gain was made in terms of immigration as the WT+/WT folks were held back as J & F left from door 2L.

I notice it occasionally. When I flew to IAH people started grabbing things as soon as we taxied off the runway and then again when I landed at JFK. My biggest annoyance is when people start chatting on cell phones the minute the plane touches down. That and clapping drive me nuts. You've been sitting down for the last xx hours, you can't wait another 5 minutes until the plane gets to the gate?

I think airlines should have a de-boarding process, just like boarding. Rows X to Y go out first, then so on... I just sit back and watch the scene inside/outside the airplane. No use in rushing out.

In twenty-five years of being a flight attendant, I have never seen one instance where people remained seated after the brakes were set.

I think it's ridicilous, but clearly I'm in the minority because what you talk about is the norm.

You would've loved this. I was somehow lucky to be on JFK-IAH and IAH-JFK with a frat house. On JFK-IAH, they decided it would be fun to break out a boom box and blast it while waiting in security and at the gate at 4:30 am. Then when we got to IAH and again on the return to JFK, the back of the plane applauded and whistled like they were at a concert. It was very annoying.

Here's my pet peeve about the boarding / deplaning process:

I'll be in the Y+ section, passengers at the back of the plane board first yet put their bags in the overhead bins up front. By the time I get on, the only free space available is in the overheads at the back of the plane.

So now, I've got to wait until everyone else deplanes in order to crawl back and get my garment bag from the rear of the aircraft. This really irks me.....
Just give me my Vario, my Ozone Mojo and a gorgeous day of soaring.

You just wait  Wink, WN might put a bullhorn on each plane to help turnaround times, or shoo people out of the aisles during boarding.

I've really wanted to on many occaisions, as I'm sure you can understand.

Now, I think some of it also has to do with how often the person travels. I used to stand up too... but as I've gotten older and flown more and more, I realized it did me no good to stand there waiting, especially when I frequently couldn't get into the aisle at all... so now I just sit until at least everyone in front of me is off the plane... unless I'm at the front, of course.

Me. I don't always stand up, but if my legs are particularly tight or cramped, I'll stand up and stretch them out, even if it means having to nod my head down to clear the ceiling. After sitting in a CRJ for a couple, three hours, it feels great.

Indeed. Earlier in the year flew IAD-RIC on UA Express and it was the last shuttle for that crew for the day. When taxiing to the terminal the FA said:

'Welcome to Richmond. We will soon be coming to a stop at the terminal, please remain in your seats until the aircraft has come to a complete halt and the captain has switched off the fasten seatbelts sign. Anyone who gets up before this shall be held back and shall be cleaning the plane with me and the ground crew well into the early hours. I like to do a thorough job!'

I think people don't realise how long it takes to empty a plane. Just to put on the bridge and open the door takes a minute or two, and if you're sitting at the back it can take 5 to 10 minutes for the queue to start moving. The problem is, unless you have a window seat, you get pushed out in the aisle by the people next to you.

On a EK flight from KHI to Dubia ,A guy sitting at the window seat tried to run right through my wife and I after the seat belt signs went off. He was wierd.
I yelled at him but I don't think he spoke any english, he was African.
I had the middle seat and my wife had the aisle.

I never understood what the rush was but I travel for pleasure most of the time so I am not on a schedule. I just sit there and try to get out of everyone's way. Also there is something called the "herd mentality" that basically defines the sheep-like behavior of human beings in social settings. The mentality is: If "everyone" (one or two people) is getting up to get their bags then I have to do it too...and this propogates through the system until we have everyone jumping up to get their bags, not for any particular reason, but because everyone else is. Various other manifestations of this behavior:

People lining up to walk through a double-door entrance to a building where the people in front of them are walking through one door...and the other door is completely free.

People getting in the line with the most people when there is a shorter line elsewhere.

Black Friday (The first shopping day of the Christmas season)...when in reality the best deals aren't usually on Black Friday or reappear weeks later.

I think it is a survival instinct...but it is damned annoying in most instances.

Unfortunatly we see this very often.

Here people are worse, they unbuckle thier seatbelts and open the bins while the plane is still taxiing!, have yet to reach the gate, and the flight attendents seem not to care anymore.

Furthermore, there's a new thing happening -also here- paassengers who are seated at the aft would board early and put thier luggage in the over head bins of the beginning of economy, eg. at rows 30 to 35 so that as soon as the plane exits the runway they will stand up walk all the way to these rows, get thier luggage and stand there waiting for the curtains of J or F class to open and leave, or in many instances just bypass the curtians.

Though improving, still a very familiar seen on SV. True choas, ill eductaed uncurteous passengers and unprofessional FA's.

Sad.

I have it very often too, When we land at least everybody has the dignety to still be seated untill the sign is turned off, but as soon as we even *turn on to the taxiway* it's like all passengers, perfectly synchronised, grab into their right pocket to get a cell phone.

And what doe they do with it? They turn it on, with all sorts of annoying sounds coming from the thing.

And then? They put it back into their pockets, but some start sending SMS messages like nuts and some even call. 'Heeey mom yeah i've just landed i'll see you in 30 mins.'

Then, as we come to a stop, everyone stands up and massively grap the overhead compartimentes all laughing and crying because it's shifted. Then they stand in the isle until being driven to the jetway, only to extensively say goodbye to that so nice stewardess.

Why do pax do this? It seems there is a competition that last off the plane is a sissy! I mean the second the FAs say "please remain seated" after arriving at the gate, most passengers immediately jump up.

I can understand trying to be first in the immigration queue at US airports, but at other airports if you get off quickly, you will either have to wait to find out which baggage belt your flight will be using or, if that is already showing, you have to wait hours for the luggage to start appearing. Your bag will no doubt be the last to appear.

Yeah, no doubt. At 6' 3", (185cm) I jump out of my seat just to get circulation going again. And yes, I know it is not going get me off the plane any sooner than if I'd waited in my seat. Call it psychology, psychosis, impatience whatever. Just as speeding in your car will not gain you more than a few seconds overall, standing up makes me feel some "progress" is being made.

People do the same thing on the commuter bus I take to NYC every work day. We are just out of the Lincoln Tunnel, and they start to get up from their seat and walk up the asile. I guess they are running late and think another 20 seconds will help them be on time or less late. It is annoying on an a/c, especially with overhead luggage and full flights.

There is always the specter of NICOTINE ADDICTION that might play a part in this odd behavior.

But most of it is just people being people......."ME FIRST!".
Sometimes I like just peeving some agitated people when im on the aisle. Just sit there and see how they fidget and then feign getting up. IT"S HILARIOUS.

I even saw a big 'ole broad shoving her way past people she then had to stnd next to for 10 minutes . HA! I actually wondered aloud what she would do if some shoved their way past her right then. She didnt turn around. A few chuckles from folks made it worth it.

Its the same idiots who crowd the podium at boarding.

There was actually a study completed by one of my previous employers that found the most stressful point of a regular scheduled flight is the time in which the aircraft blocks into the gate and the customer exits the aircraft. In other words, they either really need a smoke or their legs need to be streched.

I wonder with people getting up before the plane comes to a stop what that would mean if the pilots had to brake real hard for any reason. I wonder if the injured would try and sue, and whether it would be valid or invalid. What if the pilots didn't have to brake, but did anyway because the flight attendants said people were standing up? All it takes is one person to get injured and then people should learn, at least those that witness it.

It all could go a lot faster:

just kiddin`, but my point may be clear.
If all the pax would just remain seated untill a F/A says it`s ok, it will be a lot more efficient (and prevent a lot of irritation).

A few instances I can remember:

-A few years ago at LAX I was in the aisle seat in the first row of Y. Once the sign went off, I calmly got up grabbed my bag from the overhead and waited for the door to open. I couldn't get in the aisle since there was already a line of people so I just stood in place. Of course the 12-year old twerp sitting next to me decides he needs to grab his rollerbag IMMEDIATELY and climbs all over the seat to grab it, damn near hitting me in the head with it in the process all the while I'm staring at him and his mom with my best WTF?? face.

-A couple of weeks ago I was flying WN and was sitting in the middle rows of the plane. The pax in the front all filed out row-by-row and then it was our turn. Suddenly a few rude pax from the back just storm down the aisle, fast enough to where we really couldn't get out without getting run over. After a few people had passed the guy in the row in front of me jumps out in front of this lady and her kids forcing them to a screeching halt. The lady across the aisle then told her "Um, you're supposed to let us out first. That's what polite people do." No response from the mom. Apparently Ms. Rush didn't realize we were in MCO and despite her best efforts she'd still have to wait for the tram to the main terminal with the rest of the pax from this flight. Idiot.

-A week before that in LAS, there was a damn near stampede as people tried to run off the plane after it landed. Couldn't wait to blow their money in the casinos I guess....

Oh and I'm guilty of the cell phone thing, but its usually because some of the people who pick me up at the airport don't park but drive around so I let them know I'm on the ground.

Ok, I admit it...I'm a cellphone user. If I'm visiting my daughter, I'll call her, or if she's coming home, she'll call me from the runway. It's just a fun thing we do. We certainly don't talk loudly enough to interrupt or annoy anyone.

However, I'm one of the rare breed who will remain seated until the plane comes to a complete stop, seat belt signs are off and I can get into the aisle without killing anyone or getting killed myself. I travel for pleasure, not business, so what's an extra few minutes on the plane? (I'm a smoker, too, but I'm patient)

There's a video on the web which I cannot find right now, but it shows I -I believe- South American plane landing in wet conditions, ppl clap and then the bird overruns, they have to escape thru emergency exits. One of the pax films all this, although his electronic equipment should be switched off during take of and landing  Wink

However, I'm one of the rare breed who will remain seated until the plane comes to a complete stop, seat belt signs are off and I can get into the aisle without killing anyone or getting killed myself.

Dear Kmh1956, you would have fitted right in on the one and only flight I had on an IL-62.

First of all I was surprised that I was seated on row #5 since I payed almost nothing for the ticket.

When landing it was announced that pax on row 1 to 15 should stay seated and leave their baggage in the bins until row 16 to 30 had left the plane.

"We need your your fat bodies as balance weight as long as possible because otherwise the plane will fall on its back", the FA announced. The wording may have been slightly different, but the meaning was clear. And nobody dared not to obey to that order.

I personnally tend to remain seated longer than others because I have to make sure I don't forget my passport, my music, my books, my camera and so on... But I do end up standing uncomfortably like the others... How stupid can this be?

I can understand trying to be first in the immigration queue at US airports

Hey, then you hit the pax from the previous flight... Pointless action. And then you have to wait again anyway for your luggage.

I don't know what people have in which regards immigration in the US, but I've never had to wait for more than 5 minutes, unlike at the old YUL, or CDG 2F. They may be whatever you want, but at least there is enough staff... And France may be quick when they check you, but with 2 dudes for an entire terminal at the 8:30AM AF international arrival rush, you do get lines...
When I doubt... go running!

A funny incident concerning this happened to me last Saturday. I was on a Lan 767 that had just arrived at Miami from Lima. We landed on Runway 8L, and as we taxied to our gate, we had to hold short of Runwy 8R/26L for a departing American 737. As soon as we stopped, pretty much everyone on the airplane got up, despite seeing out their windows that we were stopped on a taxiway holding short of a runway and nowhere near the gate. The flight attendant had to cut short her announcement welcoming passengers to Miami to tell them that we weren't at the gate yet.

The fact of the matter is that most people who fly don't like to, its just way more convinient (or cheaper) that driving, taking a train or even sailing. Some many people taking a plane ride is like paying to fill up gas in your auto, don't want to but have to.

We all here on A.net love planes, but a vast-ass majority of people do not (how many of you care for upholstery, for example), think like them and most of your wonders are figured out. Just imagine reducing the flight time maybe they wouldn't be so bitter or impatient.

Maybe everyone would do like I and some others do: sit and wait until everyone else is off. Big grin

Biggest arrival annoyance:

Pax who start calling their ride/family THE INSTANT the wheels go bump and the spoilers pop up. They have the phone all dialed and they just hit CALL and then I hear "HELLO MOM! I JUST ARRIVED AT THE AIRPORT I'M AT TERMINAL 1 PLEASE COME GET ME!!".

F%*K it's annoying!
If you flew today, thank a Flight Dispatcher!

I agree with you 100%. I'm glad to see that some airlines are now boarding flights by boarding the F/C/Y+ classes first before those in the back with all their luggage. Now they won't be able to take up the Y+ overhead bins and they will have to drag their bags all the way through the plane to their seats.

On a different note, I was on a 757 one time and as soon as the plane was parked, a gentleman in Y bolted through the F cabin to the front door to be the first off. The jetway was hooked up to the L2 door behind the F cabin. Now the goy is stuck trying to backtrack through the F cabin while the F passengers are up gathering their belongings. I got off the plane before he did.  Big grin

My experience in China last year was that passengers did this as soon as the aircraft touched the runway still traveling at 100kts and we were 5 mins away from the gate. The seatbelt sign was still on and the f/a's didn't say anything...crazy
