Ex-Braniff 727 Sitting At ICT?

Fri Apr 28, 2006 3:21 am

Can anyone tell me what the story is on this 727? Obviously it is ex-Braniff and the registration is N422BN. It has been sitting on the GA ramp at ICT for better than 7 months now. Any thoughts??

That aircraft was operated by Ascend Aviation. (I believe Ryan International actually operated the flights for them.) There was some problem with the DOT and some questionable practices (legally) as I recall reading about. They shut down atleast a year ago. They were only in operation for a short time.

Can anyone offer more detailed info?

They did at least some charter work for NASCAR teams. I saw a green Braniff-style 727 in 2004 & maybe again last year in DAB for the Pepsi 400. That plane (the green one) was also in an issue of Airliners in the photo news section a while ago.

I can't believe that aircraft looks as good as it does ... that paint scheme dates back to 1989! It's still a gorgoous aircraft to this date.... All hail Braniff!

Braniff I shut down in May of 82, Braniff II started service in 84 and shut down in 89 (I think) then Braniff III lasted a very short time and was the company that reincarnated this particular paint scheme also known as the "Ultra" that dates back to Braniff I.

There is also a black and grey 727-200 with a BN registration. I believe it's flying for Champion Air in a VIP configuration.

This aircraft is N410BN and is operated for ReadyJetGo a charter service with VIP seating catering to NASCAR and other businesses. The aircraft is operated by Miami Air.

boy this is an airplane that could cause some good debates. Looking in the database, this particular airplane served with Braniff, probably up to about the time of the first BK in 82, then Sold to AA, then Sold or leased to Ascend? and currently registered to Stratosphere Aviation in CA. This paint job looks so good right now BNinMSY, because it was painted back to BN Ultra Blu and Registered back to N422BN in 2003! I would have argued it was a leftover from Braniff III for an hour as I was sure it was, but no, so who was the nostalga buff that brought back the old colors and Reg do you suppose?

The Braniff Ultra Scheme had to be one of the prettiest and classiest schemes around. Much better than the BRIGHT colors they used to have.

I've seen a couple of the Ultra schemes and the then had the "old" Braniff International logo on them, no the "Ultra Braniff" logo on them.

Now that will blow your mind !!

Yeah it will, that WAS a Braniff III bird, many of which were old Eastern Airlines planes. I saw one sitting in TUS after the B-III shutdown and was wondering WTF?

BTW Sorry about the links, obviously I didn't get the pictures posted properly.

A link to the original Braniff's fleet. Tells you when & what they flew, along with a piece on all their various paint themes over the history of the airline.
