CX Economy Seats?

Sat Apr 29, 2006 1:45 pm

SFO-HKG-BKK on Cathay Pacific, in economy...

Can anyone tell me if the seats are the ones shown on their web site?:

http://www.cathaypacific.com/intl/inflight/class/0,,31991,00.html

I do believe it is an older 747.

Thanks in advance!

Ok... i flew HKG-SFO and SFO-HKG! I have to tell you that despite CX's awesome service, their economy on their HKG-SFO and vice versa SUCKS big time. I posted a thread a long time ago called "CX's 744's old and rickety". Everyone got pissed at me for calling them old and useless, but they may be excellent planes, but they require a major change of interior.

My issues:

1. There is NO space at all, i mean they literally treat u like cattle. A big diffrence between their A333 and B744.

2. On take off, the whole interior frame starts vibrating like a bitch, infact the first time i flew CX 744's people actually got a jolt when we took off cuz of the insane sound created by the vibration.

3. This may be very personal, but it gets DAMN cold in those 744's. I remember i had to ask for two blankets from the F/A and still was freezing! The ride was smooth and service excellent plus it is the fastest way to get to SFO via the pacific!

If you have any more questions, feel free to contact me.

Cheers

In a way yes, the A330s with old seats have the worst legroom I have had for a long time.

i actually preferred the A333 over their B744's.

Did you ask the FA to ask the flight crew to raise the temperature?

Perhaps you flew on a newer one, but the 330 coded regional A330-300s with the thick seatbacks are the most uncomfortable aircraft I have flown apart from LCCs.

I have never flown on CXs 744s before, but from my experiences on their other aircraft, the 333 and 343s are tight in economy. The 772 and 773 are fantastic, because despite the poor legroom (32 inches), the seats are a few centimetres wider which makes a big difference for me.

BTW, CXs inflight entertainment is one of the best out their. Plenty of options to keep you amused.

I flew CX LAX-HKG, HKG-SIN, SIN-BKK, BKK-HKG and HKG-LAX in April 2002. I enjoyed the short flights a lot. As for the trans-Pacific flights, I liked the way the crew treated us, but in terms of seat comfort, the flight was pretty much in the same league as my recent MEX-CDG-MEX with AF (744), MEX-GRU-MX with AM (762ER) and GRU-ATL with DL (763ER). Back in 2002 there were no PTV's but since I was with a lot of friends, that did not bother me at all.

By the way, perhaps someone can tell me which types I flew in my HKG-SIN, SIN-BKK and BKK-HKG flights. The flight numbers and dates are the following:

03.29.02 CX 717 Departed 09:05 HKG-SIN
03.31.02 CX 712 Departed 13:35 SIN-BKK
04.04.02 CX 750 Departed 11:25 BKK-HKG

I am thinking they were 777's, but I cannot be sure. Hopefully someone can help me out.
Upcoming flights:
April/May: AM MEX-SCL 788 (J), AM EZE-MEX 789 (J).

Yes, and the problem was, the FA that I had on CX889 JFK-YVR was a bitch. I kept on calling her and she never came. There were babies crying in the seats in front of me and that also drove me insane.

Uhu...... I really understand what you mean. I was on B-HOG and B-HUI on the way back. I don't know but you are vibrating and you feel like you are going much faster opposed to other 744. I flew on JA8917 between YVR-NRT this winter and it felt so much slower and smoother because it didn't vibrate like hell.

Agreed here also. It was damn hot when I boarded the plane in YVR. Within 10 minutes, the temperature in the cabin must have gone down 10 degrees celsius. It was super super super cold up there!!!

Thanks for your insight on Cathay. Now I have a better idea on what to expect on their aircraft, seatwise. I am flying CX for the first time next week. I know that CX is one of the best airlines in the world so I am definitely excited about this trip. I expect the 14 hour Trans-Pacific flights will be a test of mental and physical stamina. Seat comfort is critical in this situation.

I'll be doing LAX-HKG on the daylight flight (CX 885 - B-744) then over the following few weeks I'll be flying the HKG-BKK (B-744), BKK-HKG (B-773), HKG-TPE (B-773), TPE-HKG (A-330) and HKG-LAX (B-744) segments. My first time flying on the 773 and 330 aircraft. Would you say that the economy seats on the B-744's are at least tolerable for a 14 +/- hour flight?

The Cathaytalk website that Lufthansa747 mentioned is full of great information. I have been reading discussions on that site quite a bit lately. It looks like the coach cabin on CX 885 and 884 are not as full as the redeyes going westbound and the later flights going eastbound. I hope that is true. Nice to have the seat next to you open on longhaul flights.

On the Trans-Pacific CX flights, I see they offer two main meals with snacks available in the galley if you are still hungry. What do they offer for snacks? Just MSG laden noodle soup or are there other things like sandwiches, porkrolls, chips etc.

Thanks!!
I'm leavin on a jet plane. Don't know when I'll be back again....

Keep planes cold!

It is impossible to get cool on a warm aircraft....unless you want to see me laying naked in the aisle.

I totally agree! Hopefully the flight is cool or even cold. Other than the expected great service, this has been the only good thing I've heard here thus far about CX.

Airlinebrat... please let me know how it is, as I'll be making the transpacific flight out of SFO early June.

Thanks!

Besides the MSG-laden noodle soup, there're so-so-tasting sandwiches, peanuts, cookies, pretzels, and chocolate-coated biscuits.

I've never flown CX's 744s (did fly 743s more than a decade ago tho), but have found their 333s and 343s to be a tad on the tight side. I did fly AMS-HKG on the 343 and didn't find that too bad though.

Yes, esp if you know Chinese. Goofy Hong Kong movies are a fantastic way to pass the time on a longhaul flight!!!

Which is pretty standard fare on economy flights to Asia nowadays ... BA's Y class service is exactly the same as well!

I almost did same thing on an Air Asia 733, there was no A/C and it was so hot up there. What truly made me mad was they sold out all the water bottles by the time they got to my seat! I was 2nd from last row. no drinks were available for purchase anymore..... I nearly passed out.
