BA Confirmed As World's Favourite Airline

Wed May 17, 2006 11:29 am

How do you determine the world's favourite airline? One obvious way is to determine of which airline's aircraft a-netters take most photos. Here are the results:

1. 24,050 British Airways
2. 23,439 Lufthansa
3. 15,430 American Airlines
4. 13,825 Delta Air Lines
5. 13,230 Air France
6. 13,114 United Airlines
7. 11,395 Northwest Airlines
8. 11,196 Qantas
9. 11,161 KLM
10. 11,105 Air Canada

Note that Air France / KLM together just creep to the top of the list with 24,391.

Note also that the above classification is based on the airliners.net classification. So, for example, KLM does not include KLM cityhopper or KLMuk anymore than Air France includes KLM.

I believe the top two airlines outside the top ten are SAS (9,760) and Singapore Airlines (8,963).

Perhaps it is surprising in view of the size of JAL and the Japanese love of photography that they do not feature. They would come in eighteenth with 7,044 photos after Continental (8,500), Southwest (8,160), US Airways (7,849) and Iberia (7,104).

9. 11,161 KLM

To be fair to KLM one must include:

KLM Asia
KLM Cargo
KLM Exel
KLM
KLM Cityhopper
KLM Cityhopper UK
KLM UK

Oddly enough the British Airways option on Airliners.net inlude:

CitiExpress
LoganAir
British Regional Airlines
GB Airways
Comair ZA
Sun-Air
British Airways Flying Club
British Airways Cargo

And it is the same for virtually every airline. There's Delta Shuttle, American Advantage, Singapore Cargo etc, etc etc. As I said:

BA probably because they fly to over 300 destinations.

I'm glad to see little old QF up there a number 8.

Yes, but that method would make NorthWorst #7 in the world. And everyone knows that ain't the case!

Hell, in today's USA Today, NW placed dead last in customer satisfaction amongst American carriers.

If you enter 'Comair' in the a-net search engine you will retrieve images of airliners operated in Comair (SA) c/s, airliners operated by Comair (SA) in BA c/s, airliners in the c/s of Kuaula - Comair (SA)'s low cosat airline as well as airlinbers operated by Comair (US). Interestingly I retrieved the same image of ZS-NNG:

by entering 'British Airways/NNG' and 'Comair/NNG'. However when I entered KLM (Royal Dutch Airlines)' and 'cityhopper' I retrieved just one photo of a KLM Boeing with a KLM Cityhopper aircraft that was mentioned in the text behind it. I then did a search of 'Loganair'. All the most recently added images were either photos taken some time ago of aircraft in Loganair livery or of Saab 340s either in service in all-white livery or in Moldovan Airways c/s both before they were painted up in BA livery.

If that were the reason Continental would be up there too, they fly to 289 destinations.

Could well have something to do with their old propensity for special colour schemes also.

Some carriers, EI & KL for example miss out on this way to fill the photo database.

HIGHLY unscientific, and to be honest, I wouldn't judge the World's Favourite Airline by how many photos aviation buff's have taken of a particular airline's planes..

Good research though!

I think this method favors airlines with variations in paint scheme (eg. British airways at the time of World tails) or airlines with a very varied fleet (again British airways is up there), over airlines with one paint scheme and only one model.
People like to take photos of different things and that will reflect in these figures. If there aren't too many different things to take photos of, fewer photos get taken.

Fair enough and thanks for your compliment. But even when BA used 'The World's Favourite Airline' it did not say Favourite for what! Clearly once you got passed the title of this thread - but only once you got passed the title - it was clear that in this case we were discussing the favourite airline for photography by a-netters!

Then why is Lufthansa right up there? Is it their football noses? I don't think so. I reckon that if you did research on the nationality of the photographers or the country where the photos were taken you might find the UK and Germany right up there. And if you take photos at LHR or FRA then BA and LH are going to feature if not dominate

BA was called The World's Favourite due to the fact that it carried more international passengers than any other airline at the time.

But airlines that have more planes/flights are by default more likely to be more photographed, irrespective of how good they are.

What would be quite interesting, (I think) VV701, is if you can present the same numbers adjusted for number of planes. For example, number of photographs taken / number of planes. That woudl be more realistic....

Well this thread has certainly cheered me up on a dismal evening!

How can you use the number of photos taken as an indication that BA is the world's favourite airline? Wouldn't the actual customers decide that rather than us geeks who stand in a field taking photos?

This is which airlines photos were taken of - notice BA and Air France/KLM, from three countries with lots of aviation photographers take priority. This isn't a fair comparison by a long shot - these are just the airlines it is "easiest" to take photos of.

The Americans are all on there because the huge majority of A.net users are Yanks.

Just for a comparison, here is where the continents stand in terms of pictures taken:

Europe: 560972
North America: 264970
Asia: 74595
Oceania: 49959
South America: 24480
Africa: 8107

The list above puts it all in proportion now - no wonder there are loads of BA/AF/KL photos - Europe is where all the photos are taken!

Oh and North America - well with AA/UA/DL/NW/AC being the majority of the North American fleet - well that's what places North America second!

Don't forget that the photographs for British Airways will only cover a timespan of just over 30 years. Before that it was BEA and BOAC, so makes it a bit more impressive.

One could say that airlines that have more planes/flights (certainly compared to their direct competitors) have more planes/flights because more passengers choose to fly them making them the most popular airline.

I'm not so sure. Although most of the photographs on a-net have been taken and submitted recently we must remember that the fleet size varies with time aqnd the photographs have been taken over many years. And while the fleets of some airlines are bigger today than ever before, some airlines have reduced their fleet size as a number of sites in the AZ ans CA deserts will testify. However - and please do not tell me that my assessment of the active aircraft in the MAIN FLEET of your favourite airline should be 188 and not my figure of 180 and please note that I've only included those airlines that were in my original list- here goes:

1. 109.4 photos per aircraft (11,161 photos. 102 aircraft) KL
2. 100.6 photos per aircraft (24,050 photos. 239 aircraft) BA
3. 97.7 photos per aircraft (23,439 photos. 240 aircraft) LH
4. 93.4 photos per aircraft ( 8,963 photos. 96 aircraft) SQ
5. 87.5 photos per aircraft (11,196 photos. 128 aircraft) QF
6. 87.1 photos per aircraft (9,760 photos. 112 aircraft) SK
7. 55.8 photos per aircraft (11,105 photos. 199 aircraft) AC
8. 49.6 photos per aircraft (13,230 photos. 267 aircraft) AF
9. 46.4 photos per aircraft (7,104 photos. 153 aircraft) IB
10. 36.5 photos per aircraft (7,849 photos. 215 aircraft) US
11. 32.6 photos per aircraft (7,044 photos. 216 aircraft) JA
12. 32.0 photos per aircraft (11,395 photos. 356 aircraft) NW
13. 30.8 photos per aircraft (13,114 photos. 426 aircraft) UA
14. 28.7 photos per aircraft (13,825 photos. 479 aircraft) DL
15. 23.9 photos per aircraft (8,500 photos. 356 aircraft) CO
16. 22.2 photos per aircraft (15,430 photos. 696 aircraft) AA
17. 19.0 photos per aircraft (8,160 photos. 429 aircraft) WN

I think this shows that us Europeans are more snap happy than our American friends. I think it does not show that the number of photos necessarily reflects the number of colour schemes as KLM have roared up the table and Lufthansa are still well up there although Qantas have further improved their position and have had a number of attractive 'special' colour schemes in recent years. But - and it is only fun - I would like to hear others views as to what this shows. Perhaps like 'Myrtle Avenue [at LHR] is a great place to take your Nikkon on a cold December afternoon'!
