So I have heard about WN starting operations at Dulles soon. Does anyone know how soon they are planning to open it up? Also what would be the top 5 destinations we could see WN start right away from IAD?
Any thoughts or comments are appreciated.

I'm thinking that one of the IAD destinations may be RDU. Isn't there as high-tech corridor near Dulles with lots of technology businesses? Since RDU is also a city with lots of high tach businesses there may be a potential for lots of business traffic between the two.

Plan is for service to start sometime this fall. I would expect destinations announced within the next two months.

I would assume sometime in the first two weeks in October.
As for initial destinations, I will say MDW, MCO, MHT, BNA, and PVD. Maybe one LAS flight,too.

If past practice is any guide, I would guess IAD-MDW, IAD-MCO, IAD-TPA, IAD-LAS, and IAD-PHX.

I am not sure where, but when I was at the American Association for Airport Executive conference in San Diego last month, a lady from the Washington Airport Authority in a round table large hub meeting said that Southwest was going to be starting this summer some time.

If WN was to go IAD-FLL they'd break the "gentleman's agreement" with B6. However, B6 is breaking the agreement with BUR-LAS...IAD-FLL is a much more important route, and if WN picked that route, not only would it be stupid with 2 competing carriers, one of which a LCC as well as a competiting carrier out of DCA, but it could lead to an all out war between B6 and WN. As far as LAS is concerned, yes B6 flies there, but WN has proven that 1X daily does not effect the operations of other airlines on the route, so I do not think that would be an issue.

How so? when the BWI metro reaches Dulles it will mean there is even more people wanting to fly and traffic if you're trying to get from the IAD area to BWI.. so I would think BWI and IAD would be totally different markets. I want to say it almost is now, however when there was Independence Air out of IAD it did hurt BWI some.

I know a few people who drives all the way up to BWI specifically to fly Southwest and their "cheap" fares.....
How metro affects the whole thing? I don't know but I do know that BWI is also pushing for metro to reach them they say it will affect their competitiveness (saw in on the news)

It would get very interesting if they tried this, UA will be very protective of their hub-hub routes. Same goes for the IAD-LAX mkt.

Given WN's small presence at IAD (at least in the beginning) I don't see them flying to RDU from IAD initially.

Right now WN has A1 and A3 will be adding A5

Adding Service to IAD will not hurt BWI I think it will inhance the Washington Service.
