Launching a new Gatwick - Glasgow service too.

Im surprised it took them so long to launch this, they launched EDI-LGW a few years ago, I would have expected GLA to have been announced shortly afterwards...

"easyJet has succeeded by matching BA’s route network and providing a range of services at a much better price than BA. easyJet now offers:

* Europe’s best hand baggage allowance (same volume as BA Club Class with no weight restriction)
* Access to airport lounges for those that want to pay for it
* Free transfer to an earlier flight if meetings finish early
* Overnight check-in at Gatwick for early flights
* Internet check-in (and 15 minute arrival time at the departure gate)
* Speedy Boarding (£5 per sector) for those that want to board the aircraft first"

These are the kind if things that makes easyJet such a popular airline, they are business traveller friendly and are prepared to adapt to the customer where Ryanair implements changes whether passengers want it of not!

One thing I don't thing understand is, I regularly read on here and other places how slot restricted LGW is and easyJet does not seem to have any problems getting slots.

With me being a LTN fan it is a pitty there is no expansion from there. But they seem to launch brand new destinations from LTN as an experiment and if these work they expand them to LGW and in many cases once the route has developed LGW has higher frequencies than LTN on those routes. Good examples are Berlin, Amsterdam, Madrid and Athens.

Im a good sport and if LGW is where passengers want to fly from then so be it!  Wink

I think it is slots at peak periods that are not available, which is possible why LGW-IBZ departs at 21.55.

Good to see U2 expanding at LGW. I only hope that to head off U2's expansion, BA EuroGatwick does not follow the decision at MAN to become BAConnect.

Quoting Gilesdavies (Reply 4):

LGW has slots available but these are only at unsuitable hours for many airlines. Slots at peak periods sometimes come on the market, and the rumour is that Ray Webster, U2's previous CEO, was already on his way in a taxi to buy up the slots that became available when BA cut back some of their services.

BTW, does anyone know what is happening about U2's LTN-SAW service. The U2 website still says seats are unavailable at present and will be on sale when the Turkish civil aviation authority gives permission.

I believe it was just after 9/11. U2 are also a lot more flexible with slots thanks to their much shorter turnarounds, wheras many airlines cannot do 20 minute turns, and thus cannot take the slots without delaying themselves frequently.

LGW-MAD is to increase to 4 times per day, will LTN lose it's twice daily service?

A same day return with BA on LGW/GLA in October is only about £20 more than similar timed flights on EZY. It's worth the extra with BA just to avoid south terminal's pier A.

I thought this was just a trial on one route - LPL/BFS. How does that help LGW passengers?

Good point, those gates are a bit poor, not enough seating. Don't like the North terminal's pier 6 though, what a long walk!

Maybe they should join SkyTeam and provide connecting service to the three US SkyTeam airlines that have to fly to LGW. Or they should just code share with the 4 US airilnes that fly to LGW. A fair number of US passengers on those airlines might prefer connecting in the UK to onward destinations in Europe.

Not surprising that U2 is ramping up the LGW-CGN frequencies, since BA left the market between Cologne and the UK some months ago.

One of U2's first routes was between LTN and LPL in the late 1990s, but the railways beat them there, so the route was discontinued.

I think LGW to LPL is certainly a possibility - crossing London on public transport can add over an hour to a journey, so providing a quick link between Sussex/Surrey/Kent and LPL may be viable.

Don't forget both LS and BA operate to MAN from LGW though...
Next flights: LGW-LBA-LGW, LHR-SIN-SYD, SYD-BKK-LHR, LGW-GRO, GRO-CIA, CIA-MAD, MAD-LGW

Some do it at the North Terminal, which is why a number of BA Euro flights have AA numbers.

I think they would rather stick to being a point to point airline, saves grief, and money, when connections are missed.

Some of these slots are coming from easyJet dumping their LGW-Ireland routes all together (around end-September).

So that's 1-0 to Ryanair then, ORK was always cheap.

Is it true that U2 are pulling out from LGW to Cork, Knock and Shannon completely at the end of September? Loads on many of those flights have been low and fares were often very cheap, so it is no surprise if they are pulling out, as there was obviously not enough traffic for two airlines to be competing on these routes.

I'm surprised about the Ireland routes. True the loads weren't always great, but they have recently upgraded the ORK route to 3x daily, so it must have been doing ok prior to this. But yes, they are going on the 30th September

2:0 if you include GO's well-known foray into Ireland from Scotland. OK, that was pre-U2 days, but still.  Wink

You must remember that FR will fight endlessly to protect 'its turf.'

When U2 cease their LGW-Ireland-LGW flights, it'll be interesting to see whether FR retain their current frequencies or increase capacity through additional flights.

Yes, unfortunately Pier 1 will be the only one at South not to get a revamp, a great shame but as pretty much all airlines using it are now LCC's, you get what you pay for. I flew EZY to NCE last month and was lucky enough to get Satelitte and the area which is now revamped. Once complete it will feature new lighting, seats, ceilings, ficxtures, looks good so far thumbsup . And as for Pier 6, the walk is no longer than the gates FCA/DL/EK use (49 etc) and it's the only walk in a world where a 747 can taxi underneath you, pretty cool biggrin

Possibly but I doubt anything with very good MAN connections with LGW.

Indeed, I once got a flight for £20 return including taxes, that's about $10! I doubt i'll ever fly that cheap again.

Which country's Dollars would that be? Certainly not US$ as at today's exchange rate £20 is about US$37.

I once got a return flight for £6.99 plus taxes that took it slight over £20. I took a day trip to Cork just for the fun of flying and was very impressed with the standards of service from the U2 crew.

Fares from Shannon to LGW on U2 are often as low as £2.49 - "Cheaper than the cost of a phone call" as they advertise at Shannon Airport.

While we're on that subject, i took a trip to Cork from Gatwick, going out with Ryanair and back with easyJet, costing £8.50 including all taxes. Having said that, both flights were purchased during each airline's 'January sale,' but still, that's cheaper than going one way from Gatwick to London Victoria on the train

Might have to do it again during the summer to check out the new terminal, will be the last time i go there, in the near future at least.
