BA @ LGW B737 Replacement?

Would a two class A318 be a good choice or an A318.5. This is all assuming that their short haul service remains two class.

Wouldn't that lead to a mass downgrade in the amounts of passengers they carry though? I'd think an A319 would be more appropriate, or maybe even an A320  Smile

If I can recall correctly off the top of my head;

Long haul makes the money.

LHR short haul delivers a small profit.

LGW short haul makes no profit.

BA City Express / Connect is losing money. (Although they are obviously trying to change that.)

That is only if my memory serves me correct, so don't quote me on any of that. Somebody better informed than myself will be able to confirm / deny it for you.  Smile

This is an interesting but rather theoretical thread as BA have just renewed the leases on the 733s and 735s based at LGW. Further there is no indication in their two-year business plan (for the period starting 1 April 2006) of any plans to change these aircraft or the mainly owned 734s also based at LGW.

From the BA Investor open day "Gatwick must become MORE profitable before even thinking of refleeting"

Some other interesting facts from the investor day (available on the website)

- Current outllok for fuel is $75 per barrel.
- Shorthaul are 2/3 of BA's pax and 1/3 of their revenue.
- Shorthaul is now profitable - a turnaround from 2000 where they lost £300m on s/h
- Regional has 56 routes / 50 Aircraft
LHR 43 routes / 87 Aircraft
LGW 43 routes / 33 Aircraft
- Reducing property portfolio at LGW

Whilst more A319/320's are the most logical choice, it is an open question if they will be replaced at all.

A figment of his imagination! I think he was trying to say (though not very clearly) that an aircraft size somewhere between the A318 and A319 might be useful for LGW, but it sounds like very strange logic to me.

If they were going to replace them with anything, i think B737-700's would be a better option. But with the shorthaul favour with Airbus, i can't see that happening.

I also can't see them completely refleeting the LGW aircraft to A319's. Some routes are ideal for the smaller B737-500, and an A319 would be far too large for those routes.

Yes it is, they make peanuts, if that.

That's why an A318/9 fleet would make sense. Anyway, as previously mentioned Willy's aim is to get LGW profitable before they even think of new planes, the 737's do the job fine. Plus, BA started realising how tacky they looked and have since painted lots so they're nice and shiny Wink, no sign of them leaving anytime soon,

Not to mention that they have newish overhead lockers etc. I flew on one of the LGW 735s last year and found it really nice! Much more comfy seats than many newer planes!

I agree. I could really relax in those seats, as apposed to the seats on Ryanair's newer aircraft, where the seats aren't nearly as comfortable.

Yes indeed, I believe they've had them for quite a while, they certainly modernise the cabin nicely.
