This happened last week when a Trade Winds Airlines B- 747 full of flowers was coming from MDE to MIA and it had an engine problem but it was too late to abort.

Nobody was hurt but the plane is considered a Write Off…

That's crazy. Notice the spark from the number 2 engine as it eats some FOD.

Why was the cameraman filming the truck at the gate prior to the 747 going off of the end? or is this security camera footage?

Looks like security camera footage to me. The way the camera zooms out, pans up, and zooms in again seem quite mechanical and steady, like a camera on a motorized pivot mount. I wonder what got the operator's attention.

I'm guessing the Captain called some sort of emergency over the radio while he was monitoring it?

Wow! That is one painful video to watch! I am just glad the crew was okay. I do imagine the pilots were saying the exact words on the top of the title. I know I would be! Good thing it was grass at the end of the runway. Water could have made this much more interesting.

This video was posted earlier this week but was deleted for some reason. Literally 5min after it had been posted. Maybe due to double-post. Still good noen the less.

Sorry to be picky, but FOD is actually Foreign Object Damage, so technically speaking, the damage done is the FOD, but the phrase has started to be used in place of just Foreign Object. I'm guilty of it too, just thought I'd be a smartarse and point it out......

Lots of airside litter bins at MAN marked 'FOD' so clearly they mean debris not damage (you don't put damage into a bin, you put debris in it).

We have the same here at Exeter, I was just pointing out that it's now used as a phrase for objects, when actually the "D" stands for damage. Not saying it's wrong to call it that, I'm just telling you that's what it stands for.

It has always stood for Foreign Object Damage. Ramp folks are trained to pick up foreign objects on the ramp that may cause damage to the engines.

Part of it is damage to the engine, but the danger of the exhaust gases of the engines picking it up and it flying through the air hitting someone on the head is greater. At least that's what they told me at Fraport when i worked there...

Eery picture. Not to speculate, but I will....

It would appear as though they had slowed to a fast taxi speed to get to the end of the runway sooner but were carrying too much speed and when they tried to slow started sliding. This can be seen by the fact that the engines were in reverse idle, at most, until about 500 ft. remaining when they accelerated to max reverse. This is evidenced by the lack of spray until they reach the last 300-500 ft.

Oops. I guess you can't get away with that in a 747 like you can in a King Air...

FOD = Foreign Object Damage. But it has a common usage that has changed from the orignal meaning.

Was damage in my younger years too and strictly speaking I should have put!

Foreign Object Damage (Debris) as this is the official line as per

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FOD

If I'd have put Damage, someone would have posted about Debris!

It looks to me that there was NO reverse thrust used at all, and also, the flaps seem to be at 10-15 degrees instead of the normal 25-30. This is also evident from the pics above. Engines 3 and 4 have the TRs in the closed position and on engine 2 it looks like the TR cowl was dragged back because of the impact. Remember the AF 340 at YYZ, all engines had their reverse doors open. Then again, there is a lot of spray so maybe I'm wrong...

The spray comes in at the last 500' or so. It looks like none at all until that point. Oops.

Crazy video...that's got to be a sickening feeling to know that the end is coming and you are too fast to stop, but you have 10-15 seconds to think about it.

They told us in the Navy that FOD is Forigen Object Damage. Then when I came to the airlines it seems to be Forigen Object Debris. It goes ok with me either way. But when looking for FOD, it kind of makes sence to say that we are looking for Forigen Object Debris...because we want to find any Debris that will prevent Damage.  Smile
