A year ago the CVG - ACY flight LF averaged high 80%. A lot has changed with CVG since then. I'm no longer consulting for DL, so I ahve no idea how the ATL loads are doing.

They used to have FRJ flts to BOS and DCA, i think DCA operated weekends only BOS maybe too. I don't think they lasted very long

Yes, the SJTA (manages the airport ACY) put a lot of money advertising the service. I think the flight arrived late into ACY and departed early, so the flight was not appealling. FRJ reliability was another story. I remember Buttrell (former DCI & OH President) walking the halls on Virgina Avenue defending his decision for this aircraft.

Being from ACY.. maybe I can help... the new ATL flight is running about 65% in its first 2 weeks (about 25-30 pax on the 40pax CRJ) according to OH... haven't paid much attention to CVG, but they seem to be holding their own. As far as any new service, I haven't heard anything .

CO left right after 9/11, which was surprising because that means they forfeited their incentive from SJTA. They never gave a reason or notice for that fact.

BOS would work on a daily basis I believe, but I think that left along with the FRJ, and DCA I didn't understand from the beginning.

Wouldent that be something like a 20 minute flight? And a one hour drive? Also what did CO fly? ACY-EWR?! If so, thats nuts.

Not even close to an hour drive, probably around 3-4 minimally depending on traffic. It's about an hour from Atlantic City to the Jersey Turnpike, and then from there, probably another 2 hours to DC, in no traffic (leaving between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. or so). You leave during rush-hour, and you'll be swamped with Philly, Baltimore and Washington traffic, which could mean up to 6 hours.

It was ERJ service to CLE. Back in the 1990s, CO did have an ACY-EWR service on the ATR-42. It's about a 2 hour drive on the Garden State Parkway to go from Newark to Atlantic City (over 100 miles), so there are several shorter flights between other city pairs.

US, until around 9/11, also served ACY, with Beech 1900s to PHL (48 miles I think it was) and BWI.

Not really, at least not anymore. The Turnpike Authority (which has jurisdiction over both the Parkway and Turnpike) has slowly been removing tolls on each side of the highway, doubling the charge in one direction and having no toll in the other. They've also added high-speed EZPass, so that has really sped things up as well.

CO flew CLE-ACY after receiving a grant from the airport authority to start the service. I lived near CLE at the time, and despite the subsidy, the CLE-ACY flights were more expensive and had more restrictions than CLE-LAS. For example, to get an advance purchase fare to ACY, you usually had to book 21 days in advance and have a Saturday night stay. Otherwise, you got hosed on a full Y fare. CLE-LAS, OTOH, only required a 7 or 14 day advance purchase, and a 1 or 2 night stayover, which did not have to be a Saturday. So if you wanted a quick couple days in ACY to check it out, and wanted to go on a couple weekdays, you couldn't do it on CO. At the time you could get CLE-LAS for $200-250 r/t, ACY was well over $300 on the 21 day advance. Once CLE drained the subsidy, the revenue wasn't there to support the service, and pulled it shortly after 9/11. CO did nothing with the subsidy to bring more visitors into ACY by air. The airport authority blew it by not attaching more strings to the money. If I'm not mistaken, it was in the neighborhood of a million dollars or so that they threw at CO.

I hope delta stays commited to ac. im sure a good timing and cheap fare flight to bos, alb, pit, maybe even a city like columbus would work. the key would be cheap. the charters do really well with fligths from like cities in ohio and pit and cities to ac. vegas is really far for a weekend trip. ac is getting alot nicer by the year and i hope delta is there to notice that. the key would be cheap seats and fill the plane to get people to go to ac. look at ac on a weekend the place is amazing now like half the hotels are sold out on weekends. it really is having a new boom mostly started by the borgata casino. i have talked to so many people from all over mostly in the summer who mostly drive cause they have to cause ac has such expensive and bad air service connections. ac is more fun in the summer than vegas i want to be at the beach not in a burning hot desert  Wink

as crazy as it sounds to someone not from the tri state area a flight from lga to acy i think could maybe even work  Cool (i know its def a stretch but it would be really fun to see)  Smile i live off the parkway and can tell you that the traffic is so slow on the weekends. The traffic is so bad on the parkway so the 2.5 hour drive from the city to ac can easily be a lot lot longer like honestly five hours would not be a stretch at all for a summer weekend. prob a better idea for a helicopter service but i would love to see delta try it they could connect people to some other places in the northeast too

I remember when CO had a partner carrier flying DHT's from EWR, DCA and LGA into Bader field! I wish they would expand Bader, not for commercial flights but for more FBO operations.

US ran that route for several years (YV) and it did well, but I believe it was run under US slots which they wanted back.

The partner was Southern Jersey Airways... the flew DHT and the DH7's out of AIY.... as far as Bader being expanded, it'll never happen. As soon as the city's lease on the airport with the FAA is up, the airport will be closed and the land developed. It's sad really, there is a lot of history attached with Bader Field.

I did the drive from central jersey to wildwood last year. It was something like 8-10 dollars in tolls round trip and plenty of traffic to boot (it took 3.5 hours which is ridiculous) Sometimes I often wonder why CO doesn't bring back ACY-EWR because it's such a terrible drive up the parkway (ERJs probably too big.) But you and I both know on the parkway you can get away with not paying tolls by speeding up through the EZPass lanes where there are no toll booths  Wink

This year, it seems.  Sad  Sad  Sad

(Though they've been threatening to close Bader "this year" for about the last decade, it seems they really mean it this time.)

Yeah, they even claim to be the first airport in the country to have used the word "airport". (Though, obviously, Atlantic City claims a lot of things which may or may not be entirely true.  Wink)
I'm the expert on here on two things, neither of which I care about much anymore.

That is true.....

It is a shame they will close it, although they have turned half of it into a baseball stadium already!!!

There is not a sadder story than AIY (Bader Field). This airport at one time had about 10 flights to PHL, multiple flights to JFK, LGA and EWR and also served DCA and BWI and this was all daily! It was probably the busiest "little" airport in country for commercial airline service than any other airport with runways under 5000 feet. Politics, economics and community pressure (thanks to a few deadly accidents) doomed what was once a really fun place to watch small airliners coming and going in steady volume. It is shame that there is little written about this airport that had such a great history dating back to the early 1900's.

All they would really get is leisure traffic though.. which isn't terribly good for revenue - and there really aren't any connecting opportunities at DCA for DL aside from hub service. The FAA currently runs an government shuttle between the two because of the Tech Center. I worked at the Tech Center between 2001 and 2003 before transferring to DC.

I remember trying to get the ACY-DCA run on DL only because it meant it would be a jet - albeit a small one. The timing sucked and the fares were astronomical. I thought at the time it was surprising that there was no government fare on the route to bolster business. Ultimately it was dropped and it was back to Amtrak and/or the shuttle for me.

The couple of times I took the ACY-CVG myself for personal trips it was pretty full and the idea of not having to drive to Philly was a real lifesaver.
