The U.S. Transportation Department chose Delta for flights between Los Angeles and Puerto Vallarta, Frontier for service between Los Angeles and San Jose del Cabo, and JetBlue for New York-Cancun service.

i wonder what the departure/arrivals time will be.

Interesting, thanks.

Are there any limits on flights per day?

I'm happy to see one more airline in LAX-PVR (HP/US, AS, and now DL).

Dang... 6/30/06 (from B6FA4ever's signature) is aquite a day for B6!

Is that all of the flights? I'm suprised more routes were not applied for...  scratchchin

No big surprises here. DL already has CUN service from so many other gateways that there was no way the DOT would deprive B6 of service from it's primary gateway. Despite all the build up, JFK is still DL's #4 hub. DL has authority to serve CUN from LAX, SLC, CVG, ATL, BOS and IAD.

i can see it being 1x daily for the off peak time and add more frequencies during peak times.

hopefully since this is a tourist resort destination we'll offer daytime flying rather than red-eye service

Great! I'd like to go there next February, though I doubt I'll be able to use my TruePasses for free flights.

I'd expect 1x in the winter with various busy times, such as Christmas and Spring Break being 2x. Fares should be moderate, though not nearly as high as what they are now. I'd gander $149-$399 o/w.

Headline:

Frontier adds another route out of LAX, gets Cabo authority.

F9 to Cabo on A319s will be sweet! And maybe AA will stop charging an arm and a leg for such a short flight...

There are no restrictions on capacity or frequency. jetBlue could fly one weekly flight or ten dailies. As long as they are flying the route, they keep the route authority.

This is great news. I am glad they got it and they should do well. Hopefully we will see some more B6 expansion in Mexico.

I could see them during the high season doing up to three flights a day, during the slow season I could see them offering once daily and maybe dropping Tuesday and Wednesday flights.

If Long Beach had any customs/inmigration services, JetBlue could probably exploit that.

Even if, all of the interesting routes from LA, namely CUN, GDL, MEX, PVR, and SJD have already been assigned, and there would be only smaller markets for B6 to exploit.

I wasn't aware Long Beach was considered part of the greater Los Angeles area, in that case disregard my last.

It isn't. Although Los Angeles, as well as Miami and San Francisco, are multiple airport cities, each airport is considered independent. jetBlue could apply for LGB-CUN/MEX/etc. if they wanted to.

The airports that are considered one are JFK/EWR/LGA, ORD/MDW, DCA/IAD, DFW/DAL, and IAH/HOU. BWI used to be considered part of DCA/IAD until recently.

WTF, the LA basin airports are seperate but the NYC and SOFLA airports, among others, are not? Yet another reason why I'll never understand the DOT. What's their reasoning for that? Can't be population, cause otherwise the same would apply for NYC, and neither area, as then the same would have to apply to SOFLA .

I agree! It's ridiculous, IMO. The Los Angeles Basin, which has a lower population than the Tri-State area (right?), gets seperate rights to each airport while NYC does not (and also has less airports than LA)? This just does not make sense...

All three SoFla airports are independent as well in the US-Mexico air treaty. I don't know the reasoning. It has been that way forever, pretty much.

I don't think we could as LGB has no customs in place, not to mention they would really have no place to set up for international arrivals.

NYC itself has 8.1 million people plus 1,421,247 on Long Island, 940,000 in Westchester; 286,753 in Rockland County; 5,933,991 in all N NJ counties; 1,706,575 in S Connecticut. So that brings the total area to 18,388,566 people. So roughly 18 million the whole NY area or tri state area. LA has about 13,236,581 in LA and Orange Counties plus some extra in the LA area. So clearly NY is larger whihc isn't like YAY it is just showing that JFK and EWR and LGA if anything is in range or anything on Saturdays, should be separate for flying down to Mexico.

Darn it... I was hoping that DL would get it due to their international and connecting feed from JFK.

But still... congrats to B6! Can't wait to see "Mi Corazon Azul" or another one of those birds in sunny Cancun!
