Sad Day For BUF Spotters...

Wed Jun 28, 2006 7:13 am

Just heard on the news that the famous Flying Tigers restaurant and spotting location has been sold to Mercy Flight, and will be converted into a helipad and offices.

It's sad to hear that I won't be able to spot there anymore, I had some of my best childhood memories there.

I'm sorry to hear that. Always sad to lose a good spotting site. I've enjoyed the many photos of BUF's terminal airside with lots of jets taken from that spot.

ROC unfortunately doesn't have a comparable spotting location. One can get good runway 4-22 action shots from a few places. But there isn't any publicly-open park or restaurant that would offer great terminal-airside shots like Flying Tigers has offered at BUF. Scottsville Rd, which would offer the best view for ROC terminal airside shots, is all lined with airport-related facilities.

Man, that really stinks! I used to go there all the time and watch planes. What a great view. I just assumed the place would re-open under new ownership until I read about it today. At least it is being taken over by an important service that is aviation related. It sounds like Mercy Flight really needed a nice new home.

On another note,,,,Any word on when the extended and refurbished rwy 5-23 will re-open? Has the crosswind rwy been able to handle All aircraft?

Best location for ROC spotters, though driving down the 390 will occassionally give you a nice surprise.

Sorry for all the BUF spotters. But hey - the expressway has some nice views of departing/arriving traffic as well.

Even though it won't be Flying Tigers anymore, it should still have great access, perhaps even better than before.

Though I work on the other side of the field now, I worked at Flying Tigers when it first opened up in 1987 and it was painful for me sometimes to hear people (mostly men) try to impress their girlfriends/wives by saying "Honey, thats a Boeing 747....

When actually it was an Eastern L-1011..... Smile

I was under the understanding that it would be enclosed in the existing NFTA fencing?

I heard that they are shooting for August 2nd, but I've heard no updates lately.

Indeed it is sad news hearing that such a great BUF spot is being closed down, first FedEx hill now Flying Tigers two spots at my local airports gone.

According to the NFTA website as of June 27th 76% of the work to the main runway has been completed and it is on schedule for an August 1st reopening.

In other news Friday jetBlue starts its BUF-BOS flights and the NFTA's site has them in Independence's gate 7, I'll be flying out on Saturday and I look forward to seeing another carrier in that gate and welcome the E-190's to BUF.

In the UK,thay are closeing down viewing area's at airports, the visitors centre at LHR is closed,so theirs no where for us to go,and the same at LGW. The only places good to go is Luton, and Manchester, but how long t'il thay do the same at these two.

its begining to be a right pain in the A-hole

yes,it is a sad day for the Tigers. That building was in very tough shape. I do not feel very sad though, back in February i had a VERY rude interaction with a couple NFTA cops. I was even threatended with arrest.
Contrary to above opinion,ROC has some great spots for PM pics on r/w 4/22. You just have to know where and when to go. These spots are not even on airport property . I've have over 200 pictures on that 'other' website from these spots.

The E-190's have been doing some BUF-JFK flights for months now, I haven't had a chance to spot since around April but there was one there on more than one occasion that I remember.

Flight152,I was taking pics of planes , sitting on the picinic bench awaiting the AM 73G from CUN. These two clowns came walking around the corner and made me answer a bunch of questions.
Once they found out I wasn't one of 'America's Most Wanted',they pulled the 'ol 'do you have written permission to be here ' b.s. Gimme a break, the place has been closed for 2 years. There are no signs, fences or anything else saying I'm not supposed to be there . I then said that I've been coming here for years, and never had a problem . 'Well you have one now, leave or you'll be arrested for trespassing' . I was the followed to my car and escorted to the main road.
I did mail in a completed complaint form with the NFTA,waited 30 days, never got a response. I then mailed a letter to thier Chief/IAD (they didn't like that  Smile ) . Well, big surprise they never got my original complaint ! yeah, right.
[email protected]!ck Buffalo and [email protected]@k the NFTA!! I don't need that b.s. !
I'll stay in ROC and save myself the tolls. The only think BUF gets that ROC doesn't is WN.

Ouch. I was afraid that that would happen to me, so I called the developer of that land and got oral permission

Scott--I was referring to ROC's lack of a perimeter location to get terminal airside shots comparable to those one could get of BUF from Flying Tigers. Fortunately one can get good a/c rotation and landing shots on 4-22 like your many photos. I just wish we had a spot like Flying Tigers for terminal airside shots.

True,Jim. You can only get pics like that when we have the airshow (not this year) when you can walk parallel to r/w 10/28. At least I don't get threatened with arrest when I spot now  Smile

Hello everyone
I am new to this forum. As a resident of the SYR area I've always noticed that both BUF and ROC seem to have little in the way of spotting areas compared to SYR. What I mean is that for at least 10 years, SYR has had an excellent area where you park for free and watch the action. Also the terminal has an aviation exhibit in the middle of the terminal with a small seating area that allows one to see part of the tarmac up close. A third place is the parking garage where I have watched the planes many a time and not been bugged by the cops.

The problem with SYR is, the garage is a bit far away for ground shots . The heat haze kills them. Don't worry about ROC,it has some great locations for PM pics, you just have to know where to go Smile

Oh No!!!  no  I was suppose to go to BUF/ROC for visiting my family next month but I realized that my favorite The Flying Tiger Resturant has been sold to another company. But I noticed that there were another spotting location at BUF. Take a look at two photos from BUF.

Thanks a bunch!  Smile

I would think the Holiday Inn parking lot would give you a close up view of arrivals on 32 (corner of Genesee St. and Holtz Dr.). The blast fence might partially block your view of departures though. I'm sure others can give you a better recommendation. I haven't spotted at BUF in a while.

I recalled that my cousin from Rochester told me last month that she read a newspaper article about the spotter was arrested by the Monroe County Sheriff Department after he was standing on the airport property on Beahan Road. He went to the court and won the case after the judge threw out the charge. Also, she told me that he made an agreement for his future spotting. Next time, the spotter can standing on the across of the Beahan Road (not on the airport property).

Anyone from Rochester heard the story?

Thanks!

Back in the late 60's/early 70's my father and I used to spot in a parking lot next to the old Westinghouse building. I recall a time when runway 5/23 was closed for some reason (maybe extension??) and, as a result, arriving flights would approach runway 32 and pass just a few hundred feet over our heads! Such fond memories...  cheerful

BLD guy,i did not hear that one . It wasn't me ,though  Smile Was he parked on the road that leads down to the gate that opens for the airport firemen ? The cops like to bust peoples balls there . I haven't been there in 3 years. I found much better spots that aren't on airport property. John,if you want, i can show you these spots when you come. I'll be in LAX July 23-29,though, catching the heavies.
