Hey everyone. Today I got my first SIDA badge of my life. I work for MCO doing ramp. I'm very excited to have this job finally. Anyway, my question is: What authority does a SIDA badge have outside of your home airport? I've heard people say it's useless at other airports and I know of others who have used their SIDA badge to get onto other airport ramps. Any airport employees on here have any feedback on this topic? Just curious. Thanks

Zero, Zip.... Nada. It's only good at the airport of issue. If you get caught on an other airport with that badge and without their issued ID or an escort you are in serious-serious trouble. Now I have had a SIDA badge help me get a temp pass at an airport. I was chashing a damaged airplane and when I stopped by the Ops Office they issued me a temp pass based off my other Sida badge. It was only good for a week and only within 100ft of my aircraft.

If it's badged for one airport, as you've already said, it's useless as other airports—especially since non-airline personnel don't know city codes, added to the fact that each airport has a different design, so there is no way that they can honor badging from another airport.

Basically, like EMBQA said, it's only good to get a temp badge at other airports, and that's pretty much only if you're there on a temporary job assignment... for example, when I was working on the ramp at BNA, for a short time we had some guys from a station in South Carolina helping us out... they got temp BNA badges because they had SIDA badges at their home airport, but they had to wear both and they were only good while they were in uniform and working.
Make something Idiot-proof, and the Universe will make a more inept idiot.

Ha! This reminds me of a story of when I showed up at an "unnamed to protect the guilty" airport. 
I needed a SIDA badge for a short program my airline was running at this facility. I was required to do overnight mx on the 727 and ride with it when necessary.
At my arrival at the Security badging office, the Security Director or trainer saw the mass of SIDA badges hanging from my neck along with the Airline ID, he just told showed me on a large diagram of the airfield and where my badge wouldn't work. He took my photo and printed out an ID for this "unnamed airport" without any hesitation.
I was quite shocked that I didn't have to "sleep" through another SIDA class. And would you believe, the same film shot on location at MCO years ago is the one that was shown at a vast majority of the airports I had the pleasure of being badged at?
At the time, I had active SIDA badges for the following airports. LAX, MKE, SFO, MSP, DFW, LAS, IAH, DTW, BOS, IAD, JFK and PSM.
Oh the joys of being a Flight Mechanic... I miss it sometimes... But now its nice to be home every night.
BTW, Dlx737200 who are you working for? Come on over to Airside 2 and see us lowly WN mechanics on RON shift sometime! lol

Correct. If you don't have a COMPANY-issued ID badge, you can't get through security outside your home airport. You have to have a boarding pass, company-issued ID, or other form of airport-related ID. That does NOT include a SIDA badge. I remember when I went to TPA in 2003 to do some spotting and terminal exploring for a day, I asked a TSA agent in Airside E (DL's base there) if I could get through security checkpoints with it. He said yes, but the reality was a resounding NO. Now, pre 9/11 that was possible. Now it is not. The only airports you can walk through and explore outside MCO are ATL, ORD, DEN, PIT, and JAX IIRC. Those are the only major airports that have one common security checkpoint that everyone goes in and out of. All the others have seperate security checkpoints for each concourse/terminal. Do you work for DGS at MCO? Good luck. You'll need it.

In Canada we have a Canada wide Airside pass. I have one... I can go airside on any airport in canada...without any kind of escort.

Your airline company ID will in most cases get you through the Employee security lines at any major airport. I've used mine to get through DEN, PDX, IND without any problems and mind you that PDX isn't served by any YX fleet. However going through DEN and PDX I flew Frontier and the IND trip was on skyway. Also I've noticed that F/As tend to give you top service if they know you're an airline employee, yes this is borderline breaking the #1 non-rev law, don't disclose your company affiliation.

Some of us work at airports small enough they don't even issue SIDA badges for airline personnel, our airline IDs are good enough for them. 
I'd take the awe of understanding over the awe of ignorance any day.

SIDA badges are only good as a form of Government Issued Photo ID...which can be used to get through security. Other than that, they are absolutely worthless at other airfields. You cannot use them to access ANY restricted areas without, of course, a badged escort.
If anyone is telling you they have used their badge to access restricted areas at other airports, if it's true, they are committing a felony in doing so.

Flight attendants are made aware of employees onboard via the passenger manifest. You don't have to tell them...as long as you sit in your assigned seat, they arleady know.
Tired of airline bankruptcies....EA/PA/TW and finally DL.

While your SIDA badge may not be used for ramp access at airports other than the one it was issued for, I also use it for ID when checking in for a flight and as ID for passing thru security. I've never had it questioned, they take a look at it and just say OK. But they DO look for the hologram on it.

my sida badge is only good at my home airport but business has taken me elsewhere where a company id and an escort is good enough for the ramp access i required. besides, when you're away from home and on business usually in casual attire going out onto a hot ramp to hang out isn't my idea of fun. i'll stick to the internet and air conditioning in the terminals if i'm not at the airplane or such.
even though the agency that issued my sida badge governs 3 other airports in the area my badge is useless at the others. in fact, we all risk getting the thing revoked if we're caught using it at one of thoer other fields.

My SIDA badge came in handy when I had to go get a replacement drivers license a few years back when I thought I had lost mine (the bank forgot to put in back into the tube in the drive thru teller line).

Is it really that smart of us to be talking about SIDA priveledges and how you can use them to get through security checkpoints and such? Yes, it is common information to a large group of people, but it's not really out there for the general public to know or need to know. In fact, here at BWI, they instruct you in SIDA training and renewal classes to specifically NOT discuss how to obtain or credentials associated with a badge.

Absolutely Not!!!! The only thing that I will say is that the whole system sucks! There is no standard between airports. One airport may choose green another may choose red or blue for SIDA Access.
All of the airports in the US should have a standard color code and basic layout with an area clearly identifiable as to issuing airport including hologram. Flight crews from various airports frequently navigate around airports where they are not SIDA Authorized. This would make sure that all personel on the field can identify someone who does not belong regardless of where you are from.
If you have SIDA access and are not sure as to your privilages I highly suggest that you return to your respective Pass and ID department and get your questions answered.

It is hardly paranoia, rather it is following protocol. Anyone who has been through a boring SIDA or AOA class knows that one of the points that is made is not to discuss security measures with anyone who doesn't need to know. While the majority in this thread may already know that, who knows about the lurkers who may be reading this forum. It is hardly Paranoia to use common sense.

It's because the badges are airport specific and makes it much easier to spot those who are not supposed to have SIDA/AOA access at your home airport. You should be able to recognize the different types of badges your airport issues. If someone doesn't have the one of them, it should be automatic that you go up to them and challenge them. People are very visual and it would be a lot easier to spot someone if you can just glance at their badge to see if they belong there or not. The easiest way to do this is for every airport to have the ability to choose their own color and layout for their badges.

When I got mine here in MSP, the APD staffer told me don't lose it or it or it will cost a $100.00 to replace. I said ouch a $100.00? I better protect this better then my charge cards. He than said he was told BOS is $1,500.00.

At some airports, there may be several different colored SIDA badges in use. For example, airline employees have badges of one color (funny side note on this, UPS and FedEx drivers that make deliveries to customers inside the SIDA have the airline employee SIDA badges since their employer is also an airline), gov't employees (City, State, Federal) have a different color, vendors have another, contractors have another, construction crews another, and then there's the Non-SIDA badge that employees of retail shops and restaurants have in order to get through the security checkpoint.

1,500 dollars for an ID damn, and to think that the Port Authority was losing it when they raised the price from 50 to 100 2 years ago.

I have to pay 500 for my all canada access pass if i lose it. That is why the security guy giving it to me it will Never be lost........It will always be stolen...You know left it on the lunch room table and someone must have grapped mine by accident......that get you a new one for free...
