Virgin Atlantic: YYZ

Wed Jul 05, 2006 12:39 am

I was watching an interview with Richard Branson on friday, and he said that he was planning on restarting service to YYZ in the next 18 months despite high landing fees.

How does anybody else feel about this?
Any Comments?

Well with YYZ-LHR traffic being so popular, Sir Richard would have to be quite stupid not to come here! I'm surprised that he hasn't already.

Hopefully we'll see some A346's  bigthumbsup

There is a lot of capacity on YYZ-LHR already. AC has 10 or so flights daily, BA 3 flights daily. Not mention TS, Zoom, MT etc, that fly into London from Toronto.

I wouldn't mind seeing a A346 at T3.

Branson is also bringing his Virgin Festival to Toronto in September. Perhaps he'll use this venue to announce something formally?

I flew VS ORD-LHR-ORD back in 2001...they were flying an old 747-200 and service was atrocious..probaby the worst international service I've ever had...and I fly around 75k miles/year....

I would rather see VS get some A330's and restart both YYZ and ORD with those birds instead....

Bringing an A343 or A346 might be a bit "too much plane" at first..especially given the competition...

Not to nit-pick but AC only has 5 daily flights YYZ-LHR

AC868 Toronto (YYZ) London (LHR) 09:00 21:15 B763
AC856 Toronto (YYZ) London (LHR) 18:15 06:25+1 A343
AC862 Toronto (YYZ) London (LHR) 19:15 07:30+1 B763
AC848 Toronto (YYZ) London (LHR) 20:20 08:35+1 A333
AC858 Toronto (YYZ) London (LHR) 22:50 11:05+1 A333

But yes there is a lot of capacity but also a lot of demand. I doubt you'd see VS being their A346s into YYZ but rather A343s.

Cheers,
Kaz

Edit: typo on A333

given that to start a new route, he would need a new a/c, and 346s are the only things currently entering the fleet, I would have thought 346 service most likely, unless they use a 343 and upgrade a 343 route to 346.

I can't completely confirm this is true about VS returning, but the buzz here and from LGW (I have family members who work for VS there) is very positive. Speaking of that, I thought the previous service was YYZ-LGW, not LHR. Personally I would rather have the service from LGW as I believe this route needs a full-service carrier. TS/Z4 and other charters just don't cut it for me. I agree that the 742 was too much plane for the route; a 343 would fit nicely.

Hopefully SRB will announce something, officially, soon. We had Virgin Atlantic service and that got taken away, we had a Virgin Megastore to be built at Yonge Dundas and that got removed. Come on man, if you have time to cameo in Superman Returns you surely have the time to give us back these things!

but there are 3 or 4 additional connecting flights via YUL and YOW to LHR from YYZ, besides the 5 direct flights.

I agree. With AC already providing 5 daily flights, plus BA, I think it would make more business sense filling in a void that is not presently served except by charter/low budget carriers. What would be an added bonus to flying into LGW is that travellers could connect onto EasyJet flights to Europe which would make flying to your final destination a whole lot cheaper instead of having to fly AC all the way into Europe. LHR-YYZ is saturated. Well, maybe it could fit another carrier but I'd rather see AC/BA fly it profitably than risk one of them going down on the route like VS did just after 9/11.

VS may want to look at YYC and perhaps YVR for 2010.

Yes the 742 was to much ac in regard of pax but very good for cargo which was doing excellent

VS should not fly to YYZ from LGW as it will largely be an O&D low yielding route then.

From LHR they can at least get a decent mixture of O&D pax + 6th freedom pax heading onwards to Africa, DXB and BOM/DEL.

Yes to begin with a daily A 343 is fine.

Only problem is that the YYZ-LHR would need to be a daytime flight for the connection times to be sensible, as all of the mentioned destinations have evening departures out of LHR.

That could work since only AC has one daytime flight to LHR and BA has none, and a number of people like them because they allow you to get there and then go to sleep.

I think that VS should get some A340-200s, slightly less capacity but long range for some of their startup routes that would be heavily competed on, like LHR-YYZ , YUL, or even YVR. It would work out fine with their current -300 fleet.

I would love if Virgin came to YYZ...only if it was a LHR flight. There are many that do not like flying AC and other than BA, there is not much in the option department for business travel. The problem with his last try was the LGW destination. Not great for doing business or connecting. Myself and many I work with would have switched to Virgin if there was a LHR spot. A well positioned product would capture many I think. A day flight would be interesting or a late departure from LHR. If one wants to do a full day in London, AC was the only option with a late flight.

As soon as I heard the Virgin Music Festival was going to be brought to Toronto I figured something was up. Virgin still isn't a big name in Toronto and Virgin Mobile is here but you hardly hear of it. It doesn't make sense to sponsor a big event in a market where there isn't much push to buy anything. Maybe the Virgin Music Store is going to be relaunched, air service relaunched, and a big push on Virgin Mobile will start seeing as cell number portability is arriving in March 2007. I really can't see Branson just throwing a concert without using the brand name to sell something beyond concert tickets.

Unfortunately not and it would be nice to see some "real" competition between
the cell providers............ which would benefit the end user.

That is why it would shake up things between AC & BA if VS would come back and give it some time to develop in to a success...............who knows what RB has in his mind with his USA plans............................

Does anybody remember about five years ago, I think Branson wanted to start a Virgin domestic service, but he couldn't due to the fact that his airline would have been foreign owned?

They are going to fly YYZ from LGW NOT LHR this time round, because the yields are low, but with a gatwick "bucket n spade" configured aircraft it can work. Frequency might not be daily initially. We shall see.

Yup! I remember Sir Richard saying this on more than one occasion in some local interviews here in Toronto.

I guess the 'crowded' market in Canada prevented him from actually doing this. Because if I'm not mistaken, the Canadian Foreign Ownership limit has been increased a bit? I think 25% or 30%?

I do in fact remember that. I remember one hot rumour at the time was he was going to get involved with Roots Air. Would have been interesting to see what Skyservice would be like these days if that were the case!

thats sad to hear...but i hope that they take the initiative and negiotiate with QR and EK a nice SPA interline agreement for the LGW-YYZ-LGW sector. EK and QR combined can easily fill up 30-70 seats per flight with their own pax flying VS from YYZ to LGW and then onwards on them via their Arab airport hubs to the pax's final destination.

Virgin didn't fly long enough on the route to establish whether or not it was a mistake. Regardless, we'll wait and see what Branson announces, if anything.
