From the above link:
Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's cabinet said that Israel held the Lebanese government responsible for the attacks and for the safe return of the seized soldiers, but it offered no details about what type of action would be taken.

how many runways does BEY have, will this affect service? I am pretty young, and sometimes jumpy, but this is a big deal right?

Um, as of right now, nothings going into our out of BEY for some time to come. The IAF is pretty diligent in its operations, it probably made sure all runways are down for a while. We can consider BEY closed for weeks, maybe months if the fighting continues.

That would be a real bummer, sitting in the terminal waiting for a flight, and the runways get shelled by artillery fire.  eyebrow

Wasn't arty, it was Israeli jets that took it out. And they probably used runway cratering munitions which are designed to dig into the ground and explode.

The Yahoo News AP article is saying now that it was in fact jets:

Israeli planes attacked the runways of Beirut International Airport early Thursday, Israeli Army Radio reported, starting off a second day of attacks.

What about the passengers stranded in BEY? Those foreigners can't go to TLV (I presume), so their only option would be to drive to Syria, maybe Damascus International.

More coming in:

Israel's Army Radio reported the object of the attack was to shut down air traffic in and out of the Lebanese capital. The airport is located in Beirut's southern suburbs, which are controlled by Hezbollah.

Since this happened at 6AM local, I imagine most flights from Europe did not depart yet. So I think it's safe to say that all flights from Europe to BEY were cancelled before the morning started.

Does anyone know if AF and others overnight crews in BEY? Also, are the runways that Israel hit the only ones at BEY?

BEY has three runways, only two of which are regularly used

The runway that extends out into sea is only 5 years old and is the primary landing runway.

The inland runway is 8 years old and is the primary take-off runway.

These are the two runways Israel has hit.

The middle runway is old and is very rarely used now.

I'm assuming their must be aircraft parked at the airport. They could be stuck their for sometime, or did they have enough warning to shuttle everything out.

To think, just the other day, there were a few threads discussing direct service from Beirut to North America becoming a possibility in the not to distant future.

On a personal note, I'm of Lebanese heritage and I've wanted to visit Lebanon my whole life, I was finally starting to feel like it was stable enough to go.

So that means that BEY will be out of operation for the immediate future, right? Or can they operate using that middle runway?

Also, never realized how close the airport was to the sea...I wonder if it was IAF attacks or Israeli Navy shelling.

I would imagine most of MEA's fleet is stuck in BEY. They were getting ready for their flights to Europe, but obviously are now stuck.

Cyprus Airways also probably has its aircraft stuck.

Quoting RJpieces (Reply 25):

Yes.

Quoting RJpieces (Reply 25):
Or can they operate using that middle runway?

In the recent past, MEA has done take-offs from the old runway 17, but for training purposes only because the runway faces the mountains. It can only be done on a light load and requires a sharp turn right. Lebanese pilots have become experienced with it, but again, it is only done in training because the sharp right turn would not be comfortable for passengers.

This is the only way to get whatever existing aircraft out.

I imagine MEA will try to relocate its aircraft to Larnaca, Cyprus.

That is unless Israel bombs that runway in a few minutes...

CNN International is quoting a senior official in the Civil Aviation Authority of Lebanon as saying that all three runways have been struck and the airport is as a result unusable. Sounds like whatever is on the ground at the moment is unlikely to leave...

Another option is to drive to AMM and leave from there. The political situation is tense between lebanon and syria.. so im not sure the syrians will like lebanese passengers or so leaving from there.

I was in BEY a week ago! whew! thank God im not stuck in such a situation!

I have seen live footage, most of MEA's fleet is stuck in the airport.

In order to go from Lebanon to Jordan, you have to pass through Syria.

So you still have the same problem.

Either way, that's probably the only option...

Or they can try to restart Kleyate Airport in the north of the country, but it needs serious work as it hasn't been in use in more than 15 years.

I asked earlier and am wondering as well.

I'd imagine that AF's CDG-BEY flights are done on a turn. It can't be more than a 4-5 hour flight right?

Looking at SkyGuide, it appears the bulk of the flights to Europe depart BEY between 2AM and 4AM, so most of the foreign airlines would have departed by the 6AM shelling.

Good morning all.

From the footage I've seen so far on TV, it seems that rwy 16/34 hasn't suffered a direct hit. I could see the smoke coming from the edge of the rwy, close to the taxi-way. This is only judging from the smoke I've seen.

The old rwy 17/35 has suffered a direct hit and has a big hole in the middle.

I haven't yet seen any photos of 03/21.

I assume there will be no flights at least for today.
