Photo: 744LCF (787 Transporter) Nearly Complete

Tue Jul 18, 2006 8:50 pm

Mike Bair, vice president and general manager of the 787 program, provided an update on another aspect of the program, the development of the 747-400 Large Cargo Freighter (LCF) that will be used to transport large structural elements from Italy and Japan to the United States. Completion of the first LCF continues in Taiwan with first flight expected next month.

What's the moniker for this behemoth going to be?

The body of the LCF in this picture sort of reminds me of the space shuttle.

As long as it does its job, I'm sure Boeing don't care what it looks like.

hehehehe - while its a nice thought, you won't see passengers in this thing - the cargo hold isn't pressurised. They have moved the rear pressure bulkhead to the front of the cargo hold. One other thing - I think you meant dual aisle - duel isle is an island where people have one-on-one fights  Wink

Yeah, that's what I was wondering. I mean, the space shuttle carrier can't event fly transcontinental, can it? Obviously a bit of an apples-to-oranges comparison, but I would imagine the hunch induces a pretty sizable performance hit.

N844AA...

When comparing the "Space Shuttle Carrier" to the "UMF Hunchback" (*ahem*), the weight of the cargo load would be considerably lighter. The Shuttle is completely decked out, while the 787 will be only hollow fuselage parts....

Also, I had wondered why they didn't bring the extended fuselage of the "UMF Hunchback" right to the cockpit, Super Guppy style? Maybe pressurization problems with a modified bulkhead?

Nice plane - anyone else seen the idea that Airbus had originally to transport A380s wings strapped to the back of an A340? - The only 3 winged airliner..........

As has ben said, the whole thing is possible only because it is not pressurized. Cross bracing to make it pressurizable would make it very heavy. And then you couldn't carry the intended cargo anyway.

My uninformed guess is that a lot of cockpit systems run through the ceiling and walls there. and you would have to reroute them. Also, if you brought the hump all the way forward, the cockpit would be in the way of cargo. You would not gain a lot of additional space.

My question was more to do with improved aerodynamics, rather than increased payload. I imagine there must be some range penalties with the hump being recessed so far back?

So what happens if one of these 744LCF crashes? What would the worst case scenario be for the 787 production?

I haven't seen it take off in person, but based on videos and photographs, I can definitely see what you're talking about -- that plane is clearly in its element once in flight. It remains to be seen if the Hunchback experiences a similar benefit once it takes to the air.

That is very true... from the first time I seen a pic of it, I just though it looked like a A310 with teeny engines and windows. If you painted bigger windows on a A380, minus the extra engines, it looks like a standard airliner, just super sized.

As for the 744UMF Hunchback... it is a workhorse, not a sleek beauty queen, but it is still pretty cool.
