Is Beirut Airport Destroyed?

Thu Jul 20, 2006 10:00 pm

Last Sunday on CTV Newsnet, a reporter stated that Beirut airport was completely destroyed, runways terminals, everything.

Is this true?

Why keep destroying the airport, all the have to do is bomb the runway, and no flights can take off or land.

Also what is the status of the aircraft at the airport.

"Only" the Runways and taxiways are damaged.

The terminal is closed of course but it is intact. For the moment.

Quick fix. Nothing that a good Lebanese construction company cannot tackle easily.

Here's a couple of NOTAMs which details that the airfield was expected to repoen on the 19th at 1200Z. Anyone know if it has or not, even to a certain extent...???

Extended thru the 31st. Pretty much mirroring the closures which Israel has announced for Haifa airport.

However even if fighting stops, I'm not sure when Lebanon will be able to provide ATC services. From what I gather nearly the entire countries radar systems have been struck over the last week.

All 3 runways have been severely damaged with several craters gouged in them, same goes for the taxiways.

The terminal is intact, but suffered some minor damage from a missile that hit very close to it.

The fuel storage tanks are completely destroyed.

At least 1 of MEA's hangers have been destroyed or damaged badly.

Does anyone know if the Transmed hangars and group of stored/derelict 707s are still in tact? They were still surviving after the first day of the attacks, but I am not sure how the subsequent bombardment has impacted this part of the airport.

Were any foreign airliners at the terminal at the time the runways were destroyed? I see quite a few a/c in the photos.

Boy; how naive to think this would be a "quick" fix. As priorities go the airport obiously is on the top 10 list; but there are other issues as how to get to the airport in the first place. And water, food, shelter......War is hell, Plus Ultra Bn.

Let's hope they are a little accurate with their bombs  boggled  so the city can quick get back to normal beauty. It's such a shame to destroy it, especially the airport. I just saw too many of the city of Beirut... Any more pictures? How is the airpot? How are those airplanes?

I was at the airport wednesday 12th. I wanted to get back to The Netherlands but was to late. A couple of hours later the airport closed and I had to go to the north. To catch a flight to Turkey and from there to Frankfurt and Amsterdam.

Didn't want to start a new topic, but wanted to know if anyone had information about the 2 Jordanian military aircraft that landed in BEY today with medical supplies. Does anyone know what type of planes they were and how they were able to land on the destroyed runways, or whether the runways were fixed to allow aircraft to land?

Ok I didn't read the whole thread on this a week or so ago. But didn't someone post that the MEA fleet were evacuated from BEY and used a taxiway to take off?

That would seem like a logical step. If I remember correctly, in the first wave of actions, only the main runway was destroyed, then, a day or so later, the taxiways were taken out.

I hope the MEA fleet got out! Any info on what may still be on the ground would be appreciated.

Peace

I heard a news report that the airport would be used for humanitarian relief - supplies, food, medicine, etc.

1 A321 (F-ORMH) is at CDG. This aircraft took off from BEY for the "red-eye" flight ME209 to Paris just a few hours before the Israeli agression and landed at CDG on July 13th in the morning.

1 A332 is at DXB. Operated BEY-DXB on July 12th in the evening.

The rest of the fleet was evacuated by the brave MEA's pilots on July 13th : They took off from the taxiways with the aircraft remained at BEY and flew them to LCA.

3 Jordanian Lockheed Hercules C130 could land on the summarily repaired Runway (16/34), on July 26. They were followed by French Air Force Transall C-160 / Hercules C130 carrying humanitarian aid (medecines, food, etc ...)

Not sure if this has been posted someplace else but I came across and thought it was interesting. If you have Goodle Earth installed, you can click this link and it shows an aerial of BEY with the craters on the runways from the bombing.

Hopefully this war will be over soon and the airport will once again be open for business...

BEY has been partially reopened for humanitarian flights. Although the situation is definitely tragic there, the NOTAMs are hilarious ... some excerpts:

" ... -LEBANON PLEASE LET ME HAVE YOUR COMMENTS BEFORE 07 SEPT 2006 NO REPLY ,MEANS DATE WILL BE TAKEN AS APPROVAL. BEST REGARDS CHIEF AIR NAVIGATION DEPARTMENT DGCA BEIRUT-LEBANON 07 JUL 08:12 UNTIL 07 SEP 12:00."

If email and phone doesn't work just issue a NOTAM to contact ICAO officials ...

" ... EXPERIENCES RADIO COMMUNICATION FAILURE THE PILOT SHALL: 1.SQUAWK 7600 2.USE THE CELLULAR PHONE TO ESTABLISH CONTACT WITH TOWER PHONE NUMBER(01629027) OR ACC(01629026) 3.IF NO CONTACT IS ESTABLISHED BY VHF OR BY CELLULAR PHONE THE AIRCRAFT SHALL: A)REMAIN IN VMC B)MAINTAIN/CLIMB, OR DESCEND TO 2000 FEET C)PROCEED VIA DORA BAY DIRECT TO THE EAST SIDE(DEAD SIDE)OF RWY 21/03,ORBIT THERE.WAIT FOR TOWER LIGHT SIGNALS. -IF A GREEN LIGHT SIGNAL IS RECEIVED THE AIRCRAFT SHALL DESCEND TO CIRCUIT HEIGHT ,JOIN RIGHT DOWN-WIND RUNWAY 17 AND LAND THERE.(THE PILOT IS REQUESTED TO KEEP AN EYE ON TOWER LIGHT SIGNALS). -IF A RED LIGHT SIGNAL IS RECEIVEID THE AIRCRAFT SHALL KEEP ORBITING (HOLDING) EAST OF RWY 21/03 IF NO LIGHT SIGNAL IS RECEIVED THE PILOT SHALL: -OBSERVE AERODROME TRAFFIC CIRCUIT AND ON HIS DISCRETION: -DESCEND TO CIRCUIT HEIGHT -JOIN RIHGT HAND DOWNWIND RUNWAY 17 AND LAND THERE 19 MAY 07:55 UNTIL PERM."

IF radio doesn't work, just call, if phone doesn't work watch the lights, if that doesn't work just land! That's what I call precise and at the time relaxed landing instructions. If only the people on the ground could have a laugh about it ...

NOTAMs can be accessed at https://www.notams.jcs.mil/. BEYs ICAO code is OLBA.

That NOTAM from PADspot is the kind of thing you'd see issued from a city that has been nuked.
