Boise (BOI) Gets ILS Update

Sat Jul 22, 2006 8:02 am

From the Idaho Statesman:

Definately good news for bad weather ops and the control tower. BOI will need a lot more than the usual winter inversion to shut down after the ILS equipment is installed, and hopefully they will install it for more than one runway (IIRC only 10R has ILS capability currently).

So, are they installing a CAT 3 ILS or what?

The article said that fog delays will be a thing of the past...well the only thing that can make that happen is a CAT 3 ILS A, B, or C...

That is my impression, the only info I have is from the article. A cat 3 ILS has been needed for some time since we do get fogged in during the winter sometimes.

Since BOI 10R already has a CAT-I/II ILS on 10R, I would presume they're upgrading it to CAT-III, CAT-IIIa actually. (Not that many CAT-IIIb or CAT-IIIc approaches here in the USA)

Don't have my plates at home but the CAT-I takes you down to either RVR 2400 or RVR 1800; the CAT-II down to RVR 1200, and a CAT-IIIa would take you to RVR 700. With mins at RVR 700, you'd get in more often than you would with the other mins, but it's still not a 100% sure thing. SMF is another place with a CAT-IIIa RVR 700 approach, and dang if the visibility didn't sit at RVR 600 and cause me to divert one time. That doesn't happen often, but it's possible anywhere.

A CAT-IIIa approach at BOI is long over due...
