Is Sun Country A Bad Airline?

Sun Jun 25, 2000 6:59 am

Sun Country Airlines, has a big hub in MSP, and has been engaging in airline costs with Northwest Airlines for years. Minnesota residents that fly Sun Country say that Sun Country airlines is no different than NWA's coach class, and some have had better experiences on Sun Country, than on Northwest. Although Sun Country's fleet is just 12 727-200's, and 4 DC-10's, by next year, they will have a new livery with new Boeing 737-800's, and will retire the 727's and DC-10's over the next few years. They don't have first class yet, but by next year, they will have 1st class. So is Sun Country really a bad airline after all??

For what was once a cheap seat charter company, I can't imagine them being all that GOOD!

Flying with Sun Country is always an interesting experience. I flew them on their MSP-SFO route in March. Well, it seemed to me that they had on-time problems, having only 12 aircraft, we had to wait 20 minutes fo connecting passengers from DTW and MKE and my return flight was also an hour late (but it is SFO). The inflight service was interesting to say the least. I stepped on the plane and the first thing I noticed was that the fasten seat belt and no smoking signs were all different, and a large percentage of them were in Arabic with tape over them with the English. The service was good, they served a quite nasty hot breakfast burrito on the outbound flight but that was redeemed by the quite tasty boxed lunch on the return. (I wasn't expecting any food) All in all, I was satisfied by Sun Country, but don't expect anything spectacular, but for $179 rt, I'l take them again. They are a good airline. I would however dispute that they have a big hub in MSP. They operate a total of 14 daily flights at MSP compared to 350 with Northwest.

Is Sun Country A Bad Airline?:

I was quite impressed with Sun Country's service. I flew them in 1997 from IAH to LAS on SY9 and SY10. The full DC10 had the charter 380seat 10-abreast configuration, which was cramped. However the flight departed and arrived on time and the service was quite good. The meal was on par with mainline carriers and the fare was the lowest. The only caveat was the cramped DC10 seating.

I would fly them again-particularly since they have started to expand their route network. From IAH they ahve gone scheduled to include Cancun, Puerto Vallarta, Cozumel, and Minneapolis. Their charter flights include Montego Bay, Nassau, and Las Vegas.

I live in Minneapolis and take Suncountry when ever possible. Unfortunatley the routes I take force me into NWA so I end up paying more. Don't get mr wrong I like NWA. SC is a very good airline. If you get lucky you will even have the President of the company serving you your food on the plane. The seating on the DC-10 is cramped but the service makes up for it. I don't feel that the fleet they fly is unsafe. I am excited about the new 737-800's they have on order. So to sum it all up, I think they are a very good airline. Good luck to you.

We are thinking of flying them next Febuary to the Cayman Islands. I know tihs is not one of their regular time table, but this travel agent has charted plane their before. My moms friend took a charter to Grand Cayman a few years back from MSP. So I hope we can get a charter flight to GCM. The only down side, not F/C. When are they suppose to be getting first classes exactly? My mom friend Jill just flew them from MSP to FLL a few months back. She likes them. I think I would too. Nothing beats a non-stop flight!
