It seems that all the surviving airlines from the Qualiflyer Group are now in the Star Alliance, Swiss Airlines, Tap Air Portugal, LOT, Austrian Airlines, and now Turkish Airlines.

This is a tremendous news for both -Star and Turkish- and the advantages for both sides will this make a win-win situation.
TK are expanding rapidly and their quality of fleet and service obviously did qualify them for the team.Istanbul ,Izmir and Ankara will see additional passengers feeding into Asian and ME flights, while FRA,MUC,ZHR and VIE will undoubtly befeit from an increase of Turkish customers.
Congratulations -and Merhaba Türkiye

And I think same with LOT on WAW-IST.

So, what does this mean for TK? What can we expect in terms of TK's aspirations to fly to YYZ, JNB/CPT, or even GRU? How about JFK connections?

Well JFK connections are nill and void. The only airline that operates there is UA with limited US service. It would be smart if TK wants connections with UA to go through ORD, because it is the hub and the focal point of all of UA's ops.

After having read through an article in german publication Aero International recently PLUS when keeping the rather close ties between LH and TK in mind, this move is only logical IMO.

TK and LH founded charter operator XQ.
Didn't LH Technics have some involment in creating/updating TK Technics ?
For sure is, that TK Technics currently is performing (heavier) maintenance on some LH-a/c regularly.

I copied that list off a German forum, indicating the 2006/2007 target cities for expansion.Even if some destinations will not be ready next year,it's an impressive growth-path underlining TK's drive for excellence.
I've rarely had bad experiences with TK ,but I expect IST to become a litle over-crowded soon. They lack another runway so some operations might have to start out of asian side operations.(Sabiha Gökçen airport )

Well, JFK has a VERY decent O/D traffic for TK.

THY wants to start IAD soon, so along with ORD, UA is the best match for connection feeder traffic.

Hopefully this means a daily IST-IAD 332 Flight is now in the cards.

With regards to an airport that has gained the most new routes from alliance synergies - it has to be IAD. I know DC is a major growing market but 5x FRA, 2xMUC, 1x VIE (supposedly one of OS's highest yield routes), 1xCPH, 2x peak to GRU, etc.

Good news for *A and TK! My parents have flown TK twice already (return DEL-IST-Points in Europe) due to the cheap fares from India, and they've been quite happy with the service and have stopped over 2 times in Turkey as well!

:D. Might make sense to merge the programs to minimize the overheads of multiple programs? However, if that does happen, TK may be able to negotiate lower thresholds for Turkish members.

As indicated I found this list in a German Forum -the author names the TK web-page (Turkish version ) and interviews of TK's marketing manager as well as Turkish tourist portals, having usually good ties to TK management.
I mentioned that some destinations might not be valid for 2007 but are definitely in the eyes of network planners.

I guess this takes QR out of the Star Alliance picture, at least for now. Till now I think they would have been the perfect fit. Then again if they keep expanding like they have been they won't need to be in an alliance.

Awesome!!.. As a 1K I hope their UAL/TK upgrades will be better than AA/TK upgrades. There is a huge Turkish community in IAD area that could use a less than x7 week traffic. UA can bring more and more customers to TK.
There is potential for US military traffic using the UA/TK combination. When I flew IST-ADA two months ago, the aircraft had more American pax than Turks  Smile

TK needs a better aircraft than 330s. 340s make a lot of money in IST-JFK route but 330s are weight restricted in the summer time..

Good to see TK in *A. I hope this will make them to get their act together in terms of customer service..

There is little to no Turkish population in ATL so my thinking is that this may be a list of what IST would like to have in terms of nonstop service. Maybe it is a potential DL route (ATL-IST) as they alreday service JFK-IST. But i really do not see TK adding ATL as there is no feed for them with a Star Alliance airline.

As predicted by yours truly as long as two years ago  Wink

Lets take a look at some of the criteria which went into making an alliance decision by THY which was approved by the Board of Directors today.

-Alliance which would provide the best placement and billing of THY and the Istanbul hub.
Star does not have a Southern Europe/Middle Eastern partner.
OW recently added RJ with its Amman hub
Skyteam has Alitalia and one day maybe MEA depending on how things work out in Lebanon.
-Natural network connectivity with other alliances.
By far Star won this one, as more THYs top worldwide destinations are into Star countries particularly Germany, Switzerland and the UK. But also even in the Far East like BKK, SIN, NRT/KIX.
-Overall top revenue generation for THY
-Historical friendships and relations with other carriers.
While not widely know TK has had good relations with LH SAS, Swiss dating back many decades in areas such as IT applications, maintenance, joint carrier (Sun Express), frequent flyer (Qualiflyer) etc.. On the other hand relations with other alliance members such as AA have been quite straigned as of recent.

However before one gets too excited, many things need to happen before this becomes reality.
There still needs to be a formal Star audit followed by an invitation for THY to join.
Likewise THY needs to jump thru many hoops in the coming year regarding its willingness to spend money and integrate in a timely manner such areas as IT and reservation systems.

Another alliance (Skyteam most aggresive) could still be a spoiler with an even more generous offer, while Turkish politics could further complicate matters or create and about face.

But anyways, congrats to THY and Star!

How come?

THY is one of the fastest growing carriers in the world, has one of the youngest fleets in the industry, sits in a very strategic location offering good connectivity which would benefit Star, while Turkey itself is a large and growing market.

The proposed partnership seems like a win-win for both THY and *A

TK doubled pax numbers in the last 3 years. The fleet size is 100, 30 more single aisles coming in the next 2 years. Trust me, Star alliance wouldn't want TK, if it didn't make any business sense for them.

I went to IST earlier this year and it's a country PLENTY of potential. From what I've seen, IST is an efficient hub and TK has a strong network. With an interesting niche market in the Caucasian and Central Asian region.

But I was linking TK to OW, so yes it's a big surprise for me...

Just to give you an idea; Turkey receives around 15 mil tourists a year. This $20B industry is pushing to become one of the top 10 destinations in the world. As early as 1999 it was ranked 19th. And all this amid bird flue concerns, close proximity (for some people) to war zones, Danish cartoons...

TK also has a code-share agreement with BT (airBaltic) on the Riga-Istanbul route. BT is almost 50% owned by SK and which is also a founding (at that time) 5 Star Alliance member, so you see, things are starting to fit neatly into place.

I think that the only thing that matters is that QR does indeed join Star, when it does isn't really important. As for more than one carrier from the region, if Singapore and Thai, Lufthansa and SAS, United and US can be in Star, then I don't think it will be a problem if both THY and Qatar are members as well.

As for India, I would love it if Jet joined Star (although, it will probably be Air India), that said why can't Star have both join?  stirthepot
