Delta's Second Largest Hub Is?

Sat Aug 12, 2006 4:07 am

Oviously ATL is the largest but what is the second largest delta hub?????

Is it CVG,SLC,JFK ?????

Is all the recent expansion at SLC and JFK at the expense of CVG????

I know CVG use to be the second largest. With the cuts at CVG I'm wondering if it is/will still be the second largest hub for Delta??????

I think in terms of total flights, CVG is still second largest. However, SLC has more mainline flights than CVG.

Enough question marks there?????? It depends on what metric you use. If it is number of flights it could be one hub. If it is number of pax it could be another hub.

CVG is number 2 in flights (mainline and barbie jets) as well as pax IIRC. SLC was close behind but with JFK getting so much expansion, excuse me...realignment of resources, I'm sure they are up there as well.

My guess based on somewhat old data would be ATL, CVG, SLC, then JFK.

DL's hubs will look like this this fall: (includes mainline and regional)

ATL - 1,000+ daily flights (around 600 mainline)
CVG - 450 daily flights (around 60 mainline)
SLC - 350 daily flights (around 80 mainline)
JFK - 160 daily flights (60-70 mainline)

I count 94 mainline departures from SLC and 80 from CVG. I would imagine that CVG has more average seats per mainline plane that SLC with the international flights. Somebody else can count the DL connection flights.

edit.. I used today, so I might have excluded weekend service adjustments or flights that don't operate daily. This is for a rough comparison only.

The huge difference in mainline flights at each of the hubs is amazing. Only one of DL's hubs actually has over 100 mainline flights. Out of all the majors, Delta is no doubt the most concentrated.

Just FWIW, SLC's website lists DL as 108 daily flights, with SkyWest 233, ASA 40, and Shuttle America as 10. Granted, the SLC website has proven to be somewhat out of date, but where did you get your info?

As far as MAINLINE DL goes, SLC has more passenger totals than CVG.

I counted, but had to round due to certain days having more flights.

Actually, you'll all be surprised to find out that SLC is Delta's largest hub. The SLC airport encompasses nearly 7,500 acres, compared to 7,000 at CVG, 4,930 at JFK and a mere 4,700 acres at ATL.  Wink

CVG might have a few more acres as a result of the new runway that they just opened. I recall them buying more houses for the purpose. However, I have no evidence to refute what you have. i was just adding my 2 cents.
