How To Get Economy Plus On UA

Mon Aug 14, 2006 10:26 am

I will be flying to AMS in October with United. My routing will be PHX-IAD-AMS-ORD-PHX. I normally fly with NW, but I am looking to build up my Mileage Plus account now after blowing my WorldPerk miles. So in short this will be my first time with UA long haul and I was wondering how to score Economy Plus with them? Is it a first come first serve type deal at check in, or can only elites get it? Can I buy it a check in, and if so how much is it? Do they just give it away to whoever has a smiling face or what? Im sorry if this is stupid, but I was just wondering.

Thanks

You can buy at check-in for around $35-50 or so per flight segment.

As a non-elite, I ended up getting it twice on my last trip. On the first flight, there were no seats available for selection when I booked my ticket, so I had to be assigned a seat at the gate (only E+ was left). On my second segment, the FA asked me to switch so a family could be together, and they went back to E- and I went up to E+ and had a middle seat empty next to me  bigthumbsup  (personally I'd rather sit apart for a few hours and have extra legroom, but to each their own).

If you aren't willing to pay, your best bet might be not to select seats and wait for the E- cabin to fill up. However, this can always backfire and you can end up in the last row in a middle seat.

Once you're Premier, you get it automatically. Until then, you can try to just ask nicely, saying something about how you fly them all the time. That used to work for me pretty often. I remember the upgrades usually only costing $19-$29, but that was a few years ago and it may have gone up.

You can buy Economy Plus Access directly from United. The link is the very first one at the top of the Google search page when you enter United Economy Plus as your search phrase.

So at check in I should just ask to buy it? Is it even so reasonable for Intl travel? I was expecting around 75-100USD.

If its worth it you can buy it E+ on all your UA flights the whole next year I think for around $225 on UA's website. It's called Economy plus access.

It's actually $299 and its good for you and a guest for one year. And when you buy online they will give you 2000 bonus MP miles.

thats what I was going to do, but I would only need it on long haul flights, about 3 times a year. So if I can do it for 50USD at check in, or better yet for free I dont see a need to buy it. In any case I would like that thank you very much for taking the time to find this info out for me, and that goes for everyone!!

UA calculates the fee to upgrade to E+ in terms of mileage, not by the number of segments, a longer flight (time wise) will result in higher E+ upgrade fees upon check in.

PS If upgrading upon check in, do it online 24 hours before departure so you have the best chance of getting a E+ seat.

If you want to gamble on day of departure availability, do that. If you want to guarantee a seat in E+, buy Economy Plus Access. There's really no other answer to your question.

I always get my E+ upgrade 24 hours before my flight when I check in. If you try to select seats online, you will get the E+ upgrade offer. I Recently flew IAD-PDX, and the price was 49.99.

I'd probably buy the E+ Access for $299. My logic is that it's going to cost you at least $150 for the trans-Atlantics round-trip (that's if there's E+ seats left), and then probably another $75-80 for the domestics. That puts you down $225, and that's if E+ is available. If you're going to be doing 3 longer trips a year, I'd definetely go for it then...you can guarentee a seat (and choose a seat that's best for you...with the buy-up at the gate, there only might be aisles left and you want a window, etc.). I wouldn't count on getting it free (I've heard many reports that they'll fill all the middles in E- before giving out anything in E+).

Of course, the best idea is to get status. Doing this trip, plus even two other trans-con round-trips, should net you around 20,000 EQMs. For a mere extra $200-300, you should be able to find a mileage run that will fill the gap to getting to 25,000 miles and earning Premier status, where you get E+, plus a chance to upgrade to F, bonus miles, priority check-in, priority boarding, etc. For a gap as small as 5000 miles, I would recommend doing a quick day trip somewhere and becoming an elite.

Im hoping that I will be able to access it on the seat map if I check in online 24 hours before I leave, as stated above. I dont know if I would be the use out of it, if i bought if for a year. Im still thinking however.

Before I got Premier last year I flew SFO-LHR in Y+ for about USD80.

It was pretty nice...especially if you can snag Seat 17A, B, H or J.

Of course, J (class) is a little better.

I have 17 A-B when I fly LHR-ORD in March so I am looking forward to that, however it let me pick those seats right when I booked. What do you guys think my chances would be on getting econ+ if i check in online within 24 hours, or if I do it at the airport the day of?

Good, but there will be a fee.

Do it when you book as others have said. If you do it before departure, you may not get it.

I have done it before...Go to the airport early and be nice to the check-in staff... You MUST show them your star alliance frequent flyer card (such as United mileages, Aeroplan, etc) then they may allow you to upgrade from E- to E+. That's how it works and I have done it TWICE!

Are there any criteria on who qualifies as 'Elite'? Is it just Mileage Plus members, or will *A Silver or *A Gold suffice?

I'm currently holding *A Silver (and pondering a mileage run to LCA to push me to Gold) and planning another RTW trip early next year.

I've probably done 6-8 domestic legs on UA and have ended up in E+ more often than not. The £40 upgrade was definitely appreciated on my LHR-SFO too.

Any Premier member can choose E+ seat during booking. Second option is to pay full Y fare, third option check online early and select E+ seat. If there are not enough Premiers etc you will not be moved.

All *Elites (including *Gold and *Silver) are eligible to receive free E+ access. For those customers, there should be no fee involved, unless going from Y to C (I've heard for elites, especially out of LHR, they offer buyups to the US from E+ to C when Y is full for around $300-500.)

Any *A Silver/Gold will get you automatically into E+. About three years ago I flew UA LHR-IAD-LHR in Y as a LH*G and was told I had seats pre-assigned in E+. It was my first flight with UA and I didn't even know what it was!
