Hello,
What are the general requirements to become employed as a gate agent for an airline? I know that the requirements are likely to vary from airline to airline, but I was just curious as to what most airlines require as far as age, education, etc. Also, what is the best way to become employed (what type of job) by an airline/airport as a college student? Thanks for all of your help!

I had a summer job two years in a row as a gate agent. One year for Business Express in Nantucket, and the next year for Bar Harbor in Boston. Neither job, back in the late '80's, gave me any real training. I learned as I went along.

You can imagine how impatient people were with me when I had long lines of people needing to be rerouted because of cancelation, and NO ONE HAD TAUGHT ME HOW TO DO THIS!!!!

I was also repsonsible for security checks. I had a about 5 seconds training on this. And this was right around the time of Pan Am/ Lockerbie!

While in college I worked for DL as a Ready Reserve. RR's don't bid lines or vacation days and are called in when needed, all the leads had my class schedule and whenever they needed me they would give me a call. I generally worked 2-3 days a week and FT during Christmas time, summer, and other holidays. The travel privileges aren't too shabby either, I think it was 25 free trips for you, spouse, parents, dependent children, & 10 buddy passes. Hands down the best job I've ever had not to mention Delta has some of the greatest people you'll ever meet.

If you call $22,000 a year after 6 years getting paid. You don't get paid nearly enough for the amount of stress, and physical tedium you need to put up with. My ackels will never be the same I don't think.

Your ceratinly not going to be respected for the care you put into the job taking care of passengers problems, or your skills as a problem solver.

You'll have flight benefits but not be able to afford a place to stay if you go, or where able to get on a flight nowadays, as if the Company would give you the time to go anywhere.

The only other benefit is that you get to work with airplanes everyday. In the end other than my co-workers that was the ONLY good reason left.

They have stripped the glamor, fun and excitment out of the job and left a stressful, under appriciated, under paid, over managed hamburger flipper job in its place.

Do your self a favor work at a retail store, the hours are better.

That's less than our first year full-time CSAs make. Sorry bout that.

If the pay is min. wage you're better off in a retail store. If the pay for full time is good, go for it.

At 13.01 an hour which is what I made after 6 years with UA. That's:

13.01x 40= 520.40

520.40x52= 27,060.80 a year Gross

say 18% taxes FICA Medicare and the other deductions is 4870.94 a year.

27060.80-4870.94=

$22,189.06 a year Net.
