Let's Hear From Employees & Latest Security Issues

Mon Aug 14, 2006 4:45 pm

Ok, this thread is for the airline employees out there. We have heard plenty about how the latest security situation has affected the customers. Now it's time to hear from the employees. How have the latest security issues affected you?

I'll start by describing my weekend at SAN...

-I have noticed at least a 25% increase in checked luggage. For some flights, bag counts have doubled. Gone are the days of full flights from SAN to OAK with 30 checked bags. The good news, I haven't seen one bag gate checked due to full overhead bins.

-TSA can't keep up. Things are piling up so bad in the CTX screening room for WN at Terminal 1 that our supervisors and managers have had to fill carts with unscreened bags and have TSA escort them to AA's screening area at Terminal 2 to get scanned. On Thursday, something like 200 bags missed flights. Some bags were coming down to us 2 hours after their flight departed!

-New restrictions now include restrictions to employees. We can no longer bring liquid into the secure area. No coffee, no sodas from lunch purchased at the food court, no sun screen etc... Guys are frustrated because even things like jello in their lunch can't go through. JELLO! We need to leave ourselves more time to eat lunch if we choose to go to the food court since if you would like to enjoy any liquids that come with your meal, you will need to eat at the food court. However, due to the extra work now, finding enough time to do so is impossible. I understand the reason behind all this. But it is especially hard for us to deal with this because unlike passengers that have to deal with this only twice (per round trip), we have to deal with the airport every day!

-Things seem to be getting better every passing day. Unfortunately while things inside the terminal are running much smoother, the ramp is still being hit hard. Talking to a pilot, he talked about how much easier it was for pilots and F/As due to a much smoother boarding process now that people aren't dealing with carry-ons and full overhead bins. He thanked us for all of our hard work and said without a doubt we are getting hit the hardest.

-Guys are getting burned out. Many calling in sick creating a lot of spots needing to be filled. That means people are getting assigned mandatory over-time. This is nothing new, but with the extra workload it makes having to stay to work, or having to come in on your day off, a lot harder on you.

-And finally, DELAYS.

Well, there you go. There you have the main points to my weekend experience. Now lets hear from the rest of you out there! Calling any Pilots, F/A, Ramp, Customer Service and so on of all airlines at all airports...how has it been for you?!?

Im in customer support for BA, biggest thing i have noticed, since it started on thursday, our call centre has had around 160 calls waiting at some points, a normal day its 30 to 40, thats nearly triple the normal call flow. What with our BFS office closing at the end of this week, it may get busier. BA have had to cancel alot of flights, causing people to call us for rebookings and refunds. We are doing well though. Clearing the backlog as best we can. I am actually having fun with it. The first day, all of us mentioned we were having a great day. All laughing in our breaks. A good team atmosphere, all of us pulling together. Lots of people staying after shifts to clear calls, managers going around with food and drink to the desks so we could concentrate on calls.

It should start easing off soon, but doubt it. Will see what its like when i next go into work on Wednesday

no sun screen etc

How do you guys keep from getting sunburned if you are not allowed sun screen on the ramp?

If if no liquids are you able to steal water from the a/c now without getting in trouble?

I work in SOCC and have not been affected by the changes as much as those in the field.

The Airport is one of the Most safe places to be in.Theres currently a Red alert on,due the LHR episode & Terror strikes likely during Independence Week.

We are as much responsible to keep a track for any Suspicious looking Packets & Characters that might roam around.

Apart from that its Life as usual.

The overhead bins are mostly empty now except for small items. Also gone are food and drink items people purchased in the airport. Passengers are more frustrated, but we still manage to put most of them in a good mood.

Thank God crews are exempt from this nonsense.

You get a little sun, and as for the liquid thing, you just can't bring them in. We have plenty of bottled water delivered to the station and you can get drinks from the sterile area and bring them down. Besides, at least with WN, we never get in trouble for snagging a drink from a plane, obviously as long as it's non alcoholic.

The best part has been loading 150+ bags on an originator to PVD that a week ago would only have 25 or so. Our ops agents love the lack of carry ons, but the ramp- not so much.

On the first day it started they weren't selling any prohibited items. Now they are warning passengers of the regulations. People have wised up pretty quickly, though. People are still buying food and eating in the airport. And shopping at duty free is just as easy to do when you land.

To my knowledge, there are no duty free opportunities in the USA for arriving passengers.

The airlines flying into the USA have resumed in flight duty free sales... in other words, you can have liquids (booze, perfume etc.) on a plane, but you cannot take it on the plane. However, if you are connecting to a USA domestic flight, you will not be able to take thaqt duty free item aboard that flight. Crrazy world!

Hey Silver, I can feel your pain man! I only can imagine the extra bags you guys are getting  Sad. I was a ramper at SAN as well (probably ran into you a few times, check my profile for pics) and I know how crazy it can get. All the best to you and all employees!

I flew LHR-MIA on Saturday 8/12...the security checks were thorough and all-inclusive. Even as crew, we could only take the one see-thru plastic bag with our manual, flashlight, and other required work items. No books, no ipods, no cosmetics for the ladies, no food, no nothing. The thing that hit me the most is that we, the crew, were the only ones on the airplane with pens.

200+ people need to fill out immigration and customs forms...with no pen!

I felt really sorry for the kids. 10 hours is a long time for them to sit still without familiar toys, books, etc.

Boarding and deplaning sure went quickly!!

I work for TSA at PHL and the rules for us being allowed to bring drinks, etc. into work with us keep changing daily. First, we weren't allowed to bring anything in with us, then we were exempt, now it's up in the air. I think all airline/ airport employees should be exempt from these rules just like the flight crews. Hopefully as time goes by, things will change in our favor. As far as suntan lotion, how about those single use suntan wipes? Might be worth a try. Has to be better than doing without. Take it from someone who turns lobster red after 15 minutes in the sun.

Well, I was working T-point (bag rooms to other airlines) in BOI on Sat, and two things stuck out:
1. I get there @ 7:30am, and that is usually when the first bags for our 8:55am LAS flight start coming down (always a full flight). But this last Sat, there were already two full carts loaded up.
2. That same day, I saw my first 'late checked' bag since this all began at 2:00pm. Nice to not make multiple trips out to the plane.

I am going to PDX Tues, so we'll see how it's different travelling.
Riddle: Which lasts longer, a start-up airline or a start-up football league?

Here at PDX bags are the main issue. Sure the rampers all grumble about the drinks thing (although it cannot be enforced) but baggage is a different story. We are regularly having 160-180+ bags on a 733 which is QUITE a load. At least 20 of these are rush tagged meaning TSA actions in PHX, LAS or PHL delayed them getting to the bag room. It's terrible, every day bag makeup receives bags at least two hours late for their departing flights. Today one bag came down the chute FOUR HOURS late! I was inbound bag runner today and by the time I had unloaded bags onto the carousel and took care of rush bags and interlines, when I got back to the gate the plane had already been turned and pushed out.

New York Times article from today. I really feel even more appreciation for all the flight attendants out there - especially those flying on routes to/from the USA and LHR/LGW.

Surprised that your station manager didn't tag crew bags for Positive ID and have them pulled at planeside after going through HBS. We did that for our crews at LGW and they were able to retrieve virtually everything and take it topside with the captain's ok (plus speed up their journey through the checkpoints). I know at least 2-3 others copied this idea by Sunday.

If I had a dime for every FA that burst into tears on being told that make-up was not an "essential duty item" though.... I walked by the VS counters on Friday and they had some of their trolley-dolleys there who were weeping buckets as they shoved their Maybelline or whatever into the suitcase! Quite heartbreaking!

OMG!! So British Airports are banning pens? How are people suppose to fill out customs forms? Are they given out upon check in? That's crazy!

Thanks for sharing it.

I have worked two round trips from HNL to LAX since the new restrictions went into effect, and I was pleasantly surprised to find not much difference in anything. We (flight crews) are treated the same at the security checkpoints, and the lines at terminal 2 in LAX have not been bad at all. On both flights leaving LAX, we were on time.

The effect on retail in terminals must be horrible. Who shops when you land? I for one just want to get home as fast as possible and in many airports there is simply no way of getting to retail levels, especially when you come off a transborder flight. The most unfortunate thing is that even though these degenerates were caught before they could cause any damage to lives and aircraft, the ripple effect is felt by retailers. Oddly enough, I bet some technology vendors are probably seeing a spike in laptop PC sales. Imagine how many hastily-packed laptops were broken while in checked luggage last week?
