MLB Looking For New Airlines

Wed Aug 16, 2006 12:57 pm

My local airport in Melbourne Florida is looking for a new airline. Currently only Delta flies to MLB. They are now looking at US Airways.

They have received a 800k grant to help star-up a new airlne. Here is more info.

Do you remember some years ago (I think pre-9/11) that the Airport website had some links to a new airline that was going to fly out of MLB? I forgot what the name was but the planes were to be DC-9s or MD80s and the color scheme similar to Midwest Express but red instead.

Any interesting airliners stored there?

MLB and DAB both had major had major incentives a few years back. MLB nearly sold the farm to DL in exchange for JFK and DC service. They got some good upgrades for a little while until things turned on the Delta front and now MLB has less than what they started with. DAB used their incentives to get a 3rd airline (UA), which has helped control the bleeding from DL's massive cuts. US is overdue for DAB and MLB, becuase they probably should have never left in the first place. MLB could also use CO or B6 for NYC service.
Experience is what you get when what you thought would work out didn't!

I remember this airline, I believe it was called "Cardinal Airlines" or "Carnary Airlines"...something like a bird. Back then they had so many proposed upstarts... Cardinal, Access, Crystal, National, WestCoast??? (Portland-based) anyone remember that proposal for PDX-JFK/IAD with A320s?

I'm hoping to see JFK-MLB in 07!

My problem with MLB is that the airfares are always so high out of there, even when there was competition. When I lived in Titusville we would always fly out of MCO since flights were always substantially cheaper there.

Were supposed to be getting B6 service soon. When I dont know, but its going to popular if the crew overnights in MLB.

I'm surprised UA hasnt come here.

DeltaGator,

My parents flew our MLB-LAS for 187.00 each. That was good compared to what DL had out of MCO.

Spirit used to fly out of MLB - they were going to or had started service to DCA but then pulled out of MLB altogether. AA also used to fly there long time ago.

Would be nice to see some more action there - sorta sad to see all those empty gates.

Me too.

Maybe AA could move in-MIA w/ATR's, DFW w/ERJ's, ORD w/CR7's, maybe even LGA w/ERJ's.

I've got a February 2001 Spirit timetable. Back then Spirit had a FLL-MLB-DCA flight and a MLB-LGA flight

Nice airport. Underserved for some time. Every flight I have ever been on, into or out of MLB is always full. I seem to remember a CO Express "Beechnut" or something at one of the gates a few years ago.

Anyone know if the DC-6 is still parked over on the east side of the field?

It's a niche market right now. Until there is another airline DL has no need to compete. Lowering fares will just take away that niche. If that happens DL might as well reallocate resources to MCO because that is what they are competing with. The market is predominantly local business' with a few leisure travelers mixed in.

Quoting RL757PVD (Reply 2):
MLB nearly sold the farm to DL in exchange for JFK and DC service.

They offered what was necessary to get a direct route to DC. The flight has performed as expected based on its intention. It is a business route.

JFK on the other hand isn't necessary. DL doesn't mind the incentives in MLB, but they are operating a 50 seat aircraft where 40 of the seats woudl be on a flight into MCO anyway. It no longer makes sense to offer a flight where you are competing with yourself for leisure traveler. $200 Rountrips just aren't profitable on a 1000 mile segment with 50 seats no matter what incentives are offered and $400 fares drive people the 50 miles to MCO.

All DL markets have less than they "started", assuming by started you mean back around 1999-2000. Don't isolate MLB and DAB. Most towns lost about 25%-30% of their domestic market from DL. In most cases frequency and capacity. MLB and DAB are doing very well right now based on the capacity offered and I wouldn't expect any additions.
It's a big building with patients, but that's not important right now.

Both cities had significant service following "operation clockwork" in Early 2005. DAB had 7-8 mainline and 2 CR7s.. now they have 3 mainline 2 CR7 1 CRJ.

I know system wide DL capacity is way down, being Delta loyal for 5 years and having expereinced how DL conn is treated as 2nd class in ATL, combined with CRJ200s on the ATL-PVD route (CR7 is OK)... all caused me to buy my 1st Air Tran ticket!

Hopefully the drastic domestic cuts wont hurt DL too much, i regular biz pax like me... if they loose my domestic business because of RJs where they shouldnt be flying and crappy DL connection service, then they'll also loose my international business.

Mainline capacity is already stretched too far and there arent enough decent (non CRJ200's) to fill in. Ill settle for E170s or even CR705s with F, but the capacity cuts may start to result in the loss of some medallions.

If AA goes to MLB, it would be MIA with ATRs, that's it. And it is a huge if, but they have looked at it. AA's Miami-based ATR fleet is just about the only fleet they have that is under-utilized.

Comair - DL connection has a 0700 flt to DCA returning at 2152hrs(not sat nite/sun morn) This schedule changes on 06SEP to a 0750 dept and a 2228 arrvl. It changes again on 01OCT, it arrvs MLB at 1408 and depts MLB at 1500

When CO pulled out in 1995 they added CO express to fill the gap....that didn't work worth s**t and was dropped.

As I've stated before...the only way MLB and DAB are gonna flourish again is to have MCO get sucked in by a BIG sinkhole.

Is the loss of the day return option going to seriously affect the route's performance?

We shall see....Harris Corp, Northrop/Grumman and others committed their employees to use that flt over going thru ATL or using MCO-DCA

Once they and the airport officials get wind of this, they may get huffy about it.

Since most MLB passengers leak to Orlando, it can't really be known using standard DOT statistics.

CO mainline was flying EWR-MLB up until 9/11.

That would be so perfect for me, every time I have to travel I have to drive 3 hours to go to MIA becouse I cant afford to park my car in MCO and I have a relative in MIA that lets me park at his place. If AA had that flight I would only have to take an 8 dollar cab to the airport.

MLB seriously needs more service, AA and CO and maybe US could pull it off more likely than any LCC. I think B6, NK and FL would have to much of hard a time triying to start service here IMO.

jetBlue is the best shot at MLB getting a second airline. There have been rumours going around Florida that jetBlue will announce a "triple whammy" of Florida destinations for winter 2006, to start in the Jan/Feb period. jetBlue has been in active talks within the past months with MLB, DAB, MIA, and PNS.

I live in MLB and I don't consider this place a vacation getaway. The beaches here suck compared to Fort Lauderdale, Miami, Sarasota, West Palm.

I think there is only room for a major airline to help with biz travelers.

I have family in MLB and am there a few times a year, however, lately I just go through MCO to save a few $$$. In April I flew from ROC-MCO on FL and I think the cost was nearly $200 less than similar flights on DL into MLB.

Its a shame. I can remember back in the late 80s when MLB had service from US, CO and DL and it was reasonable and much more accessible. Oh well, best of luck for MLB in the future.
