Thu Aug 17, 2006 11:28 pm

Pictures: First unofficial photos of Boeing 747-400 Large Cargo Freighter rolling out in Taiwan

The first unofficial photographs of the specially-modified Boeing 747-400 Large Cargo Freighter (LCF) have emerged, showing its roll-out after undergoing structural work at Evergreen Aviation Technologies in Taiwan...

ACtually another thread beat you to the punch with photos he took personally, but these are good....as we'd expect from FI.

Maybe the threads could be linked.

It kind of looks like someone substituted the shuttles external tank for the fuselage of the 747.

Oh I still think the A380 is not very aesthetically pleasing from any angle but head-on, but I will acknowledge the 744LCF is far, far uglier. I hope Boeing paints her in their current corporate colorscheme (ala the image on modifiedairlinerphotos) as it will help immensely.  Wink

It lools like a B747 with a sweater on. The front view makes it look like it has a pair of headphones on.

Boeing should of just bought a Beluga off Airbus to do the job instead of building a new aircraft. Big grin

I think it would be amazing to see all the specialized 747 lined-up for a photo op:

747-400 LCF
747-200 Shuttle Carrier Aircraft (with orbiter mounted)
747-SP SOPHIA telescope
VC-25 Air Force One
E-4 NEACP
YAL-1 Airbone Laser platform
747 Aerial tanker

There's speculation that T/Space will also use a converted 747 to lift their CXV capsul and launch vehicle to drop altitude. Talk about one versatile aircraft!

I'm hoping your not saying the Beluga couldn't do the job, for it has just about the diameter as this one.... and although you can be quite a fan of Boeing, your statement is not true... there are many fine aircraft that can do a job right.... I just hope for your sake that the ugliest jet ever, aka "WienerJet", does indeed the job right...

Aren't the LCFs not just converted but owned by EVA Air and would be operated by them for Boeing? Wouldn't that mean at least a small company name on the a/c?

The Beluga may have the same diameter, but it is not nearly long enough. He was referencing both the diameter and width needed for 787 sections. This A/C also has much more range than the Beluga. The Beluga can't make it 1500 miles with a 40 ton payload. I don't think you can go from Tokyo to Seattle stopping every 1500 miles. So, this aircraft is better technically, it wasn't built for a beauty pagaent.

How about 747-XWB? The A350-XWB should be called the A350 Penciljet compared to this beast.

I like Wienerjet too, and completely agree about the pig in a blanket analogy.
A good landing is one you can walk away from. A great landing is if the aircraft can be flown again.

While this aircraft is quite the amazing engineering achievement - think swinging tail - it is also equally amazingly UGLY! I would love to take a tour of this machine but its aestethics are down right insulting!

Congrats to Boeing for pulling this off. Beats running barges and stopping traffic in French towns to cart around Airbus 380 body parts.
