Skywest SLC-Mexico?

Fri Aug 25, 2006 3:24 pm

I've heard some buzz that OO (as Delta Connection) may be starting up SLC-Mexico routes in October. Understand this is a RUMOR at this point and I am not asking any OO employees to share anything which their company would not want them sharing at this point. I'm just wondering if this is something I've totally missed, or if this is another of those "well a friend of my brother's mailman told me...."  Smile My late night wonderings....

No rumor. Skywest will be taking over SLC-Mexico flying from Shuttle America, which is moving it's EMB-170s to ATL, as well as add a new market with GDL.

There will be more LAX-to Mexico than SLC to Mexico, but yes, Skywest will be doing some Mexico flying. Right now, the US regionals with the most presence in Mexico are: Express Jet, Eagle, and Mesa (HP). Skywest will probably jump to second place when all these routes become active.

We will miss seeing the EMB-170s here in SLC. SkyWest CEO Jerry Atkin has indicated he would like to get some EMB-170/175s for the SkyWest fleet eventually, but right now only CRJ-7s & CRJ-9s on on the immediate procurement radar scope for 00. I'm told by Delta employees that overall DL is very pleased with the EMB-170s and their work in SLC and that this success here is what is moving them all to ATL.

We'll see how long that will last since you're dealing wit three highly embedded US regionals in the overall US/Mexico trans-border market. One of the biggest trans-border mistakes DL has made over the time since the Western Airlines merger (1986-1987) has been giving up their presence in LAX and the US-Mexico market from the greater L.A. area.

To further my initial comment, Skywest will operate to Mexico as follows:
-Replace Shuttle America on SLC-MZT effective October 1st with daily year-round CR9 service.
-Replace ASA on SLC-SJD effective December 1st, same plane, on 5-6x weekly basis, with DL mainline operating on the other days.
-Start SLC-GDL February 26 initially 3x weekly, to replace DL mainline service during off-peak times, with the CR9 as well.

I'm also hearing rumors of DL pulling their mainline 738 off of the SLC-PVR route during the off-peak summer months and replacing it with SkyWest CRJ-9 service.

Are the EMB-170's going to fly some of the other routes they have been flying such as SLC-DTW, or are those routes going to switch over to CR9s or Mainline? Last time I was at SLC I saw about 3 or so E170s heading to the rust belt (DTW, CLE, etc.)

The last I heard was that CLE was going to go mainline with an MD-90, and DTW with a 738, and both I've heard will be code-shared with SkyTeam partners CO and NW.

Thanks for the update SLC, that being said, its looking likely I'll be moving over to SLC in January for school at the U of U. I'm over in RNO working at a casno right now though. Nice to see more mainline flying out of SLC though. It would be great if OO were to pick a couple E170s up to fly around.

Would make sense, as DL is going down to just 2x weekly during off-season, and Skywest could probably offer 3-5 weekly flights. Though they have not applied with the DOT for said route.

Any chance there are flights geared toward Mexican Laborers out of SLC? Such as a flight to say Morelia, or are the flights to GDL geared toward that?

That route remains an E70, which can be attributed to Wexford's maintenance facility at CMH.

I hope they find a way to bring back SLC-IND sooner than later since I'm told they had good loads on that route. DL has had to give up some good routes now that their fleet is pared down considerably, and their connection carriers have limited options for the time being.
