SAS Out Of Aircraft

Tue Sep 12, 2006 11:07 pm

I read that SK is out of aircrafts.
http://www.standbynews.com/5399.0.ht...i1[showUid]=21442&cHash=5dbde3ee49

Apparently they are having so much success with their one way tickets, that they have run out of spare aircrafts. They are dropping its CPH-BUD route, and using the plane on the CPH-ARN.

I think it is time for SK to start a program for adding new aircrafts to their fleet. 737NG or A319/A320.

Anyone with some inside info? Or able shed light on this?

Isn't SK currently taking delivery of brandnew A319s from XFW?

Wow, I thought they had too many aircraft and was anxious to offload some... they leased out two B736 to FlyGlobespan. I'll never understand the fleet planning @ SAS...

Not having any information about this so I am just speculating her but they could hold the MD-87 that is supposed to go to Spanair as the A319 arrives, or get some of Alaska Airlines MD-80 that are going. Getting some used airplanes as a interim solution might fit in SAS restructuring plan. They are not considering buying new planes in this category at this moment.

Just a point to note that GSM or flyglobespan actually bought 4 736's from SK not leasing.

They bought them? Wow, good on them... Have they kept the somewhat unpractical 116-seat SK cabin or have they reconfigured them to hold more seats? How far do they fly from GLA?

SAS should have taken the last 4 x A321s, then they would have enough capacity...

Nothing more than Spin, and an excuse to drop yet another badly performing SK route.

The 736 config with GSM is 125...fully refurbished with leather interiors. At present there are none based at GLA. 3 at EDI operate to BCN, PMI, ALC, AGP, MJV, FAO, NCE, FCO, IBZ and MAH and 1 at STN operates to TFS.

Great a/c to operate on.

Sorry if I've missed something... but why do they want 737s and A319s?

SK is actually run by avid aircraft spotters, and just like fellow spotters they want to see as many aircraft types as possible, hence they buy a few examples of everything available so they can spot all day while being at the office... clever, ain't it?  Wink

SAS actually comprises four different airlines that are run separately:

SAS Braathens (Norway), which flies 737-classics and 737NGs.
SAS Sweden, which flies 737NGs and MD-80s.
SAS Denmark, which flies MD-80s and A321s.
SAS International, which flies A330/A340s.

Now, if you would want to replace some MD-87s belonging to SAS Denmark, the A319 would obviously be the best choice.

Because they need the airplanes to fill up capacity... Is that answer enough? Or maybe you think they should go for some Russian build airplanes???  Smile Just joking.

Yes they may be loud and gasguzzlers... But the noise from them is their charm. And and gasguzzlers... Well yes, but it is up to the TCO and ROI how soon they will be taken out of operations. All the MD's are paid and SK own them. They don't cost them anything except for fuel, maintenance and insurance... New crafts as 319 or 737 there will be leasing costs. And surely a higher insurance... It's like buying a car... Although a very expensive car, but the same factors apply. Old car, will be slightly more expensive in fuel and maintenance, but you have to compare it to the higher insurance fee and leasing/financing fee. Surely over many years, it could be cheaper to buy a new car, of course depending on the mileage of the car and the amount of maintenance that is necesary.

No need to joke. SAS is considering Russia's newest regional jet that is being developed together with various European and American companies. The name escapes me at the moment, can someone help? SNBA is said to be another potential customer.

That is try... I have read that somewhere... SK is co-developing it... Lets see if there is a stronger demand for western built aircrafts... At the end it is the customers that choose the aircraft...  Smile

I really hope that SAS will buy/lease some more A340 because they really need more long haul aircraft. 11 (7 A340-300 and 3 A330-300) isn't enough if they want to expand their intercontinental network.

BTW I just noticed that SAS have updated their web page and chanched layout, and added route maps.

I think they are gone to somewhere else. Think I saw it in another thread here. I might be completely wrong, but I am think I am right? Can anyone confirm this?

Why??? SK doesn't have anymore of those. Unfortunately. They should order 30-40 new 319.

The problem is that SK is a little short on $$$ and therefor cant order any new planes.

Unfortunately can't they raise any equity at the moemnt due to the ownership situation and must therefor finance expansion by loans and as they already have a high debt rate is also this impossible........unfortunately for SK, can't they do a "Chapter 11" as that trick is legal in Europe

I have a few SAS A-319 questions? I am under the impression the beautiful A-319 RetroJet is the first of 4 319's ordered by SAS. As I have not seen a photo of a 319 in regular SAS colors I am assuming the second 319 has not yet been delivered, assuming I am correct when are the other 3 to be delivered? Also I have been pleasanlty surprised as how many different airports in Europe this new 319 Retro has been photographed at on this and other sites. With only 1 member of this fleet type one would expect a very limited number of cities to be served but it seems the opposite is true which is great for European spotters, but how/why ?

Thanks

The first aircraft was delivered in August. The second will be delivered in September. The first will be the only Retro.

How: Well it starts of in CPH and flies to a city. Then it returns to CPH, and makes another trip to another city. In this way they can utilize it optimum.

Why: SK needs it to fill out some holes. It is replacing the MD87, that eventually will be phased out. In this way they can utilize it optimum.
The cities that it will serve:
Dusseldorf
Munich
Frankfurt
Amsterdam
Paris
Manchester
London
Vienna
Geneva
Zurich
