This Iberia Plane Is Not As It Seems...

Sitting at LHR yesterday I photographed the following Iberia aircraft.

Big version: Width: 3456 Height: 2304 File size: 1937kb


Nothing unusual, until I zoomed in and noticed it says 'MD-87' on the engine. This aircraft is clearly an MD-88 (inherited from Aviaco I believe, who didn't have any earlier MD-80 variants), so I'm wondering what the hell's going on here. I very much doubt that this is an MD-87 engine as the thrust would need to be greater for use on a stretched aircraft. Could it simply be the cowling from an MD-87?

Any answers, anyone?

That is indeed an MD-88, but it may just be a replacement engine cover from a different plane.

If you look at the cowling, it is much cleaner than parts around it, I would concur.

Iberia's M87 and M88 uses EXACTLY the same engine
Both are P&W JT8D-217C

Same engine physically but surely uprated due to the extra weight?

And yes, that part of the cowl does look a lot newer.

Only fuel control is different, M88's engines are slightly overpowered, but you can change one into other with a screwdriver. Anyway, is only to let you know. I'm sure iberia didn't have another spare engine cowling (or maybe the mech wrote a wrong part number  Wink )
