Best Looking Nightime City To Land

Sun Jul 02, 2000 5:37 am

I have put on some miles in my day and I think that Chicago,Hong Kong, and Miami are the most spectacular cities to land in at night.ORD because of the skyline and the sheer size of the city looks awesome.Hong Kong because of the skyline as well and the mountains.Miami because of the amount of lights that you can see that stretch for ever due to the land being so flat.Especially when you are coming in from the east going over downtown.

Las Vegas!!!!!! You fly through darkness for about 45 minutes and then all the sudden BOOM!!!! The city becomes a visual spectacle. Maybe it's going from such extremes, but all those lights are something else!!!

Personally I really like landing in Seattle (the emerald city) because the skyline really has a green hue, and it looks really cool with the reflection on puget sound, Also Austin, TX is pretty cool to land into at night (i mean the new Bergstrom Int'l). The city is quite far off in the distance and it's pretty neat that you land in a dark field.

Although probably not the best, but I remember landing at MEX at night, and boy, that city seemed to go on and on forever, never could see the end of the city lights! Pretty spectacular view!

SEATAC is pretty to land, now that you mention the green. I forgot about that. LAS is probally the best. I was jumpseating on a flight there once and it was in the winter, clear skies and unlimited vis. We saw the vertical light on the new pyrmiad from about 200 miles out. Who needs instruments to land there? Just follow the light! Very memorable. Ill try to find the pics I took

New York and Vancouver weren't bad either. Vancouver because of the surrounding mountains that are often covered with snow and NY, because it's NEW YORK !!! Great skyline.
London was also very nice 'cause I got to see the morning fog and Big Ben, Tower Bridge, ...

I'd have to say LAX, LAS and PHX are awesome cities to fly into...

LAX because of the massive size...

PHX also because of the massive size and continuing lights, along with landing right beside other aircraft, and landing right over freeways with lots of traffic. I just find that really neat.

LAS is awesome to land in... the lights and strip are just awesome.

I would have to say New Orleans (MSY) in Mardi Gras season, because you can see the different parades making their way through the city, which is an amazing sight.

My (purely sentimental) favorite is Minneapolis (MSP), because I can recognize all the places that I have been to from the air because I know the geography of the area.

LAX is awesome because after you descend through the clouds, all you see is lights, in every direction, and it's beautiful.

I am biased here... but PHX is pretty neat to land in at night, its also home too. but after seeing nothing since taking off it is amazing to see the golden lights spread out 100 miles in each direction over the desert.

AWA320: Do you have this problem... when driving on the 202 freeway do you find yourself paying more attention to the planes on approach than driving???

New York - Sometimes on a clear night, the pilot will give you a peek of
manhattan before getting ready to land. This has happened a few times
when a late LHR flight got tangled and we circled twice before landing

HongKong - The old Airport, both during the day as well as night - The
final approach was awesome.

Seattle - Its more exciting when there is sporadic cloud cover.

Barcelona - Once Aircraft circled the city before preparing the final approach
for landing.

IN general, a pilot can make most cities are night exciting by giving one
a glimpse from a particular vantage point

To the people from Phoenix on this forum:

I wonder if there is a higher rate of accidents on the 202 at about 3:00pm when the BA 744 comes in from Gatwick.

For those of you not familiar with the Phoenix area, the 202 freeway runs more or less under the approach path to 26L/R at Sky Harbor. So you can see the problem.

I'd Have To Say Perth!

Sun Jul 02, 2000 5:55 pm

I'd definately have to say perth. Not being biast or anything, but Perth isnt called the city of lights for nothing. And Perth is the brightest city from space, so I think that warrants my vote.

My Dad says LAS hands down. I've never been, so I'll have to say ORD because of it's sheer size!

LAS Vegas

Sun Jul 02, 2000 11:10 pm

Vegas is the best night approach that I've seen. San Diego is quite interesting due to the proximity to downtown. The approach to 12R at Houston Hobby causes aircraft to do a half-loop around Downtown Houston, all visual landmarks of the city are visible. IAH is a little bit more mundane.

I do!

Let's just say I slow traffic a little bit whenever I'm on the 202 or 143. It's amazing!

In fact, you can see airplanes ALL over PHX, so I look for planes on the 10, 60, 202, 143, 153, 101, 17.... I'm pretty much a mess on the Phoenix freeway system because of Sky Harbor.

I like DFW because all you can see are lights, lights, and more lights, the darker it is means the neater it looks,i also like newyork(JFK and LGA) because you can see manhattan, especially LGA. and LGW because of the plains, then boom! you land, it also looks pretty.

My personal favorite is CLE...and again I am biased here. My family is from around there and so I know a lot of the local geography and such. A standard approach from the west and south is to fly NE past Sandusky and Fremont...direct to the Dryer VOR at the Lorain County Airport.....then out over the lake....and back in RIGHT over downtown for RWY 23L. The contrast between the city and the lake is amazing...and all too often you can see the lights of Detroit off in the distance along with the lights of the southern shore of Ontario on the other side of the lake! I love it!

I also remembered liking LAX....coming down over the mountains into the LA basin

I really enjoy landing at LGA. It's really quite spectacular to see Manhattan at night. Depending on what area you approach from, you could even see Philadelphia about 10 minutes before landing.

Although I think LAS is the best, SAN is pretty intersting in my opinion as well. The approach path passes about mile to the west of downtown, which is pretty neat. It also goes about a hundred or so feet above the Interstate 5 freeway, over an intersection with several 4-5 story buildings, and on to the runway about four or five hundred yards later. It is in my opinion the best for landings where you are right near the city.

I would have to say LGA or JFK for the reasons many stated above. Also ABQ. It is spectacular as you come over the mountains and all of a sudden lights at night or the mountains by day. If it is by night the lights are so clear because the air is so clear and the lights just extend forever. Another one is DCA if you approach from the north. If you do then you fly right over the city and see all the monuments lit up. That on a clear night is really spectacular.

I think it's Sydney, especially when you are on a nightflight from Asia(i.e. SQ from SIN).Because you have to cross the continent from NE to SW:that means,4-5h darkness,no lights at the ground and then SYDNEY

Dallas and New York are amazing at night.

Jimmie Dale Gilmore and Jack Ingram sing a song called "Have You Ever Seen Dallas From a DC-9 at Night?" Great song if you've never heard it.

Landing into EWR at night from the North gives you the absolute best sky-line view in the world.

You fly over the Jersey side of the hudson which offers the best views of the Manhattan sky-line,Jersey City,Hoboken and the Meadowlands are nice back drops also. It's nice to looking down onto the field at Giants Stadium and flying right over the Continental Airlines Arena.

The NJ Turnpike is a nice guide way into the airport, you want lights, fly into EWR at night.

Definitely Sydney! Flying back from asia on AN the other week (Business) the flight was delayed and we had to circle the city a couple of times, what a stunning sight! You got to see the whole of Olympic park lit up which is amazing (the stadium is massive) as well as the whole city / Harbour bridge / Anzac bridge and it just kind of made everyone on the plane go ga-ga! The harbour looks so special with all the lights reflected off it!

i hate repeating but LAS is best. it's especially neat if you can fly a downwind approach for landing on rwys.19L-19R. you fly over the approach end of rwys. 25L-R, and turn base about 2 miles N of the "strip". flying in on final it's spectacular with all the lights about 1/2 mile off your right wing. also SAN is neat at night as Downtown is just off to your left, on a mile final and the harbor visible to the left of the airport.

Well.... once I was on a nighttime flight from Houston to Newark. It was a perfectly clear spring evening and I sat on the left side of the plane. At one point you could see Baltimore and Washington together. After a few more minutes, I could see Philadelphia along with them. From the other side of the plane, one could see most of the Jersey coast, including the lights of Atlantic City.

The landing was awesome. We came around and landed on RWY 17 (or something around there.... I know we were facing South on touchdown) and the Manhattan skyline was gorgeous!

Definately las vegas. It's amazing coming in off the desert and then landing parallel to all the hotels (if you're on the correct side of the aircraft). I am also partial to the O'Hare approach where you pass the airport on your left going northbound, just over Lake Michigan, and turn 180 degrees to make a southbound approach. The view of Chicago downtown is pretty impressive in good weather / the right airplane / the correct side of the plane. I've had my share of ORD approaches and some of them have been quite spectacular at sunset.

LAX is pretty awesome on a clear night, but MEX takes the cake, that city is Huge! Also SFO coming from the north is really pretty. You decend right over the city.

I hate to be the wild card here, but I have to say SLC. I've never been the PHX or LAs, so I can't say there, but the effect at SLC, north or south, is spectacular! It's like no or very few lights, from the south, then this strip of light comes into view and you pass right over Lake Utah. What an awesome sight! Provo is to your right, and looking north all it is is darkness to the left, bright lights to the right!
The north appraoch is a little different. There's darkness, but not as much. The route I've always flown was PIH-SLC on an EMBRAER 126(?) turboprop. There's faint lights from small cities down there, but mostly darkness. When you get to Ogden though, it's a whole new ball game! The lake creates a great effect. At night it casts this mist over everything, and the lights just shimmer off of it. It's so cool!!! Also seeing the lights on the lake itself is great too, not an appraoch to forget.

Without question, New York City. With the most famous skyline in the world, it's an absolutely majestic place to land in, especially if you're landing from the south at La Guardia. Few people realize this, but the New York City metro area is actually a very large city in physical size (one of the world, as a matter of fact), and when you see it from above at night, the lights go on forever and ever. I really envy those people who live there and get to see it all the time when they land. I really miss New York.

I think Athens, Greece would rank among the better places to land as well. The airport is surrounded by lights and if you land from the north, you can fly right over the Acropolis, which looks spectacular at night from the air.

SFO. I came in once from the north just before sunrise, the stars were still out but there was just enough light to see the bay. The Golden Gate, Bay Bridge and the Transamerica building were all clearly visible as the city was still lit up. Off to the west the fog was making its way onshore. I had Rush's "YYZ" in my headphones. Quite possibly the closest thing I may ever have to a religious experience.
