Oceanic Flight 815

Fri Oct 06, 2006 12:07 am

On the season premere last night flight 815 was shown from the ground breaking apart. It looked to me that the plance changed from a 747 to a 773 (blended winglets and all). It looked like it only had 2 engines boefore it broke apart. I know I am addictied but did anyone else notice that too.

It's been a 777 since Episode 1 of Season 1. It's never been a 747.

I thought it was 773 but the tail near the APU exhaust didn't look right. I wonder if they had GE, PW, or RR engines?

Yes. Season 1, Episode 1, the pilot in the cockpit attempts to make a radio call, and states "Oceanic 815, a 777, crashed in an unknown location". There are also numerous occasions in airport-flashbacks in seasons 1 and 2 where the aircraft type is referenced, most noteably when Jack is attempting to check his dad's coffin in SYD.

Watch the DVD sets from both seasons and you'll find plenty of references to the aircraft type. Also, the Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindeloff have referenced the type in their podcasts.

Yep. A buddy of mine worked at the Mojave graveyard at the time it was purchased. They had 2 L-1011's at the time, and the Lost crew purchased one and hauled it away in 4 parts.

VSFLYER747400 - Lost - Channel 4 Tuesday's 10pm.

Series 2 double finale last week - Series 3 starts later this year in the UK. Very addictive but completely confusing and the main topic of conversation on Wednesday as we try and work out what happened the previous night!

You get to meet more of the Others in Season 3. Jack meets a new potential love interest too. but Jack, Kate and Sawyer are still prisoners of the Others. loved the opening sequence of the first epsiode this year. The Others see Oceanic 815 going done as the tail detaches.

Ahh, I know what you're talking about now. No, they didn't go upstairs to the cockpit, but the cockpit and first 10 rows or so were in the jungle at the weird upward pointing angle, so Charlie, Kate and Jack had to 'climb' up the inside of the fuselage to get up in to the cockpit.

Not for nothing, but the crash scene of the 777/TriStar (is that like a "Boeing Airbus"?) was pretty weak. It looked like something you might find on a cheap porno. Oh well, the show isn't about the crash, its about the people and the island.

Actually, I thought it was quite well done, considering the target audience is not the know-more-than-most contingent of a.net. The scene with the engine spooling up and down was pretty realistic, and the scatter of debris believable. Your average viewer isn't going to tell the difference between half of a 777 carcass and half of a Tristar carcass. Nor would they care.

still i wonder if anyone had boarded a flight and then heard in the saftey demo that it was a 777 and then refused to fly on it because after watching lost they thought it was going to crash or something.

Does that generally happen when aircraft crash, with severed fuel and hydraulic lines, no electrical power, etc? Personally, I think not! A bit like the dodgy scene with the engine ploughing through the water in 'Cast Away'.....  Yeah sure

I don't know, but my point that perhaps I didn't explain very well was that it was good attention to detail. Your average viewer won't know how an engine behaves when it's just sat on beach, all effed up, after a crash. The spooling up and down added a scenario that would be believable to the majority of viewers, a level of realism that would make you think "wow, they really MIGHT have to deal with that in a genuine plane crash".

Considering they never mentioned the type of plane on Lost, I'd have to assume this has never happened.
Not to mention they showed a 777 this week but all other views of the crash or wreckage have been of an L-1011.

I'm well aware of this. If this was not the case, the show would been cancelled in Season 1.
Guys watch for Evangeline Lilly (Kate), Emilie de Ravin and Yoon jin-Kim. Girls watch for, well... I'm not a girl so you'd have to ask one. Either way, it certainly isn't for the realistic plane crash scenes.

On a side note, has there ever been a REAL Oceanic Airways (or Airlines, etc.)? I know it is a favorite moniker of movies and TV, just like "555" is for a phone number.

Yes, now I remember. Part of the confusion is because of the plane used for the set, the other because in Maternity Leave we see the little toy planes above the crib, and they are... TriStars!

The Lost plane crash debris is from a Delta L10-11. There is a behind the scenes documentary on the Lost: Season 1 DVD. They actually show the producers of the show at the airplane grave yard looking for a plane for the pilot episode. They choose the L10-11 and have a demolition crew break it up so they can shiped it to Hawaii. It is worth checking out.

I follow the show pretty well and Oceanic 815 was a 777. The season 3 premier was on Wednesday. They showed the A/C breaking apart in-flight and it clearly looked like a 777. Check out this link from ABC and it will show a clip of the crash. Just look for Lost on the web page, and click on the "previously on Lost 10/4" link. The crash happens within seconds.

It is certainly a 777. If in doubt, just go to the airline's website.
www.oceanic-air.com
Go to "track flight", and option 2 will default to SYD departure and LAX arrival. Hit track and it comes up with the seating chart. Bottom left corner says it is a 777.

P.S. Lots of other stuff to find on that seating chart.

Did any of you see the "24" episode (3:00 AM to 4:00 AM) when the plane lands on the freeway?!? It was awesome! Can a (I think) 727 land on a freeway? When the plane almost was about to crash land the oxygen masks dropped, and the passengers and the F/A put them on at like only 2000 feet. So fake, yet so thrilling! Yay for TV and A.net!!!!!

The aircraft in the series is a 777. As previously mentioned, the actual aircraft used on the set was a Delta L1011 - N783DL. Check out the photos of the aircraft being torn a part for shipping to Hawaii for filming

The show has it's own reality remember.

They are on an Island that no one else can see after a plane went 2,000 miles off course, and then without explination fell from FL310+ and broke up a few thousand feet above said island. The given reason (S2 finalie: electro magnet from hatch) is bull, even in the show's reality.

Not to mention, we have a group of people who live on the isaldn and have manifests and information, and some motive that we don't know.

Anyway, the show goes with the aircraft as a 777 (in S3E01 you can clearly see the gear down, which doesn't make sense either), but the actual set pieces are L1011 chunks.
