Urgent! What Are Those Things Called They Hold Wh

Tue Oct 17, 2006 9:14 am

What are those things that ground staff hold up in thier hands to guide aircrafts during push back and parking. They look like mini light sabers. I need a picture of those for a school project ASAP. Are there any pics with them visible in the database. Can you post them? Even if i can get the official name, I can google it and get a pic.
Thanks

We simply call them "lighted wands". You may also see or hear them referred to as "marshaling or marshalling wands". I hope that helps.

Obviously they are called Illuminated Hand-Held Guidance Devices, or IHGDs.

I mean, it wouldn't be aviation without some needless acronym or abbreviation.

We use them to steer in those Gravity-Defying Common Carriage Vehicles, also known as GDCCV's. Or "airliners" as they are known here colloquially.

Hey there Flamedude -

As previously stated, they go by any number of names, some of which are not appropriate for a public forum...we usually just call them "the sticks".

During the day, and when visibility is not an issue, we use hollow plastic tubes that are approx. 12" in length and are not illuminated. At night, we use two flashlights with a yellow or orange cone affixed over the lense to prevent shining blinding white light into the flight deck...not good. The entire process is called "marshalling" and it's done to bring an aircraft to the stand and during pushback with one marshall at the nose and one at each wingtip. The marshall at the nose is responsible for ensuring that the aircraft is clear of any ground equipment, or rampers for that matter (human FOD), during engine start and movement.

Hope that helps...

This is a picture from Galls catalogue. These are used for public safety, but I think they are the same thing. John. http://www.galls.com/google/style.ht...assort=general_catalog&style=FL097
