Airports Very Near One Another

Sat Oct 28, 2006 3:05 am

Can anyone name the two airports that the closest to each other in the world. Sorry about the wording of that I know it was appalling! The only two close airports that spring to mind for me are BFI and SEA. Anyone think of any others?

Though not commercial airports, McConnell AFB (KIAB) and Cessna Aircraft Field Airport (KCEA) in Wichita, KS are right next to each other.

I remember, about 10 years ago, flying to Ireland with 3 student pilots, using a Piper Archer. We visited the Aran Island, three tiny little spots, real nice and each one having it's runway. As there is (or was...) a scheduled service, flown by Britten Norman Islanders, someone could also consider those little strips, each one about 1800 feet of runway, "Airports". At least, it serves public transport.

So one student needed some more landings. I did this with him, during the other twos were already in the Pub, chasing local women and looking deeply in Guiness glases. The funyy thing was, we did three circuits, nine landings and maybe 15 minutes of flying time. It worked like this:

Downwind, then touch and go on Inisheer, climb to 500ft, touch and go on Inishmaan, climb to 500ft, touch and go on Inishmore and climb again to downwind for same thing again. This wa fun and three real close (and small) airports.

Cheers

Do military fields count? If so, then Tucson's interational, and Davis-Monthan AFB are very close.

Also, El Paso's international, and Biggs army airfield are very, very close.

Here in Central Pennsylvania, MDT (Harrisburg Int'l) is right across the Susquehanna River from CXY (Capital City Airport). The flying distance is about 3 miles.

Let's make a list shall we... From the ones suggested (and my additions), distances checked using great circle based on airport ref point to airport ref point (km used to better distinguish the distances), Targetting <15km:

03km SPK-CTS Chitose, Sapporo and New Chitose, Sapporo... These two airports are connected.
03km KIAB-KCEA Wichita McConnell AB and Wichita Cessna
06km SAN-ZNY San Diego Lindbergh and NAS North Island
07km LAX-HHR LAX and Hawthorne
08km TUS-DMA Tucson Intl and Tucson Davis Monthan AFB
08km CXY-MDT Harrisburg Capital City and Harrisburg Intl
08km SIN-XSP Singapore Changi and Singapore Seletar
08km BFI-RNT Seattle Boeing Field and Renton
08km LGW-KRH London Gatwick and Redhill
09km SEA-RNT
09km SEA-BFI Sea-Tac and Boeing Field
09km MAN-XXB Manchester Ringway and Manchester Woodford
09km LHR-NHT London Heathrow and London Northolt
09km CDG-LBG Paris CDG and Le Bourget
10km Madrid Barajas and Madrid Torrejon
10km SIN-QPG Singapore Changi-Singapore Paya Lebar
12km Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta Intl and Tangerang Budiarto Airport
12km Van Nuys - Burbank
13km Opa Locka and Miami
15km YIP-DTW

How about Sapporo Chitose and Sapporo New Chitose... they're 2 "different" airports but are connected... you don't have to fly the aircraft between one and another... different ICAO and IATA codes if I remember correctly.

KSFO/KOAK/KSJC are >20km... except SFO/OAK

I think better stick to <10km on this list  Sad Whaddya guys think?

I imagine Brazzaville and Kinshasha are among the closest airports in different countries. 26 km

In Rome you have DaVinci and Ciampino very close to each other. 29 km.

Copenhagen in Denmark and Malmo in Sweden are only 46 km from each other.

Bratislava in Slovakia and Vienna in Austria are 48 km apart.

distrance between ELP and BIF: 2 nautical miles

Also, here in PDX land, VUO (Pearson field, Vancouver, WA) is actually inside the inner circle of PDX's class C airspace. It is wierd having to get a clearance from PDX's tower to operate at an uncontrolled field...

Define "apart" and how people are coming up with these numbers? Tower to tower? I mean, some of the separations quoted are less than the sum of the lengths of the runways, or damn close...

Right now, to verify my memory numbers on ELP and BIF, I opened Google Earth, and used the distance tool to roughly the geographic center of each field. I got 2.45 statue miles.

ELP and BIF are virtually identically shaped, kind of a wedge shape. BIF's main runway is 3/21 and ELP's longest runway is 4/22, so they are only ~10 degrees from being parallell to each other...

Before UTA merged with AF, there was a period when UT had a DC-10-30 flight from Paris once or twice a week that served both Brazzaville (BZV) and Kinshasa (FIH), including the short sector between the two cities located across the Congo River from each other (the river is very wide there). I think the scheduled flight time was 15 or 20 minutes. It was probably the shortest scheduled DC-10 sector. BZV and FIH are the only capital cities of two countries located on opposite sides of a river within sight of each other.

Although not a commercial airport, the Airbus factory and its runway at Hamburg Finkenwerder (XFW) where the A318/319/321 are built (all narrowbodies except the A320) is only 9 miles/15 km. from HAM.

At 5 miles Westray-Papa Westray in the Orkney Islands to the north of Scotland certainly have the shortest commercial airline scheduled service. The flight starts at the capital of the Orkneys, Kirkwall. The middle leg of Loganair KOI-WRY-PPW-KOI service has a scheduled flight time of 2 mins but the flight can be as short as 40 seconds with a following wind. The aircraft used are Islanders.

After a cursory examination of a few cities across Canada (Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Ottawa, Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg and Halifax) the only airports under 10 miles seem to be in Ottawa and Toronto. They all had airports within 20 miles of each other though.

*Ottawa*
YRO-YND (Ottawa/Rockliffe - Ottawa/Gatineau) = 6 mi
YOW-YRO (Ottawa/Intl - Ottawa/Rockliffe) = 10 mi

*Toronto*
YYZ-YZD (Toronto/Pearson - Toronto/Downsview) = 9 mi
YTZ-YZD (Toronto/Island - Toronto/Downsview) = 9 mi
YKZ-YZD (Toronto/Buttonville - Toronto/Downsview) = 10 mi

Some aircraft on approach to North Island look as though they are on approach to SAN only to make a hard left shortly before reaching SAN to line up for ZNY. It's a quite a sight to see!

By the way although they don't compare to some on this thread, The distance to ONT, RIV, and SBD from any of these three are all around 25 miles.

ONT-RIV= 28 mi
ONT-SBD= 25 mi
RIV-SBD= 21 mi
